The Cross-Check NHL Show

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke continue to weather their busy schedules amidst a hectic week in hockey! The Montreal Canadiens axed Dominique Ducharme and have brought in Martin St. Louis as their new head coach, hopefully bringing about a new era of change for a stagnant team.

The Beijing Olympics continue apace with the women’s tournament in its playoff rounds after Canada bested the United States 4-2 in the round robin. While the Canadian women are on cruise control, the United States women are having a bit more trouble, only barely just getting past Czechia in the quarterfinals after a stellar performance by their goaltender Klara Peslarova.

Also, the Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Dave Tippett as the team skids out of playoff contention. Tippett, however, is seemingly the fall guy for general manger Ken Holland, whose mismanagement of the Oilers assets continues to harm Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Finally, Andrew and Mary end Friday’s show with more Star Wars talk with major The Book of Boba Fett spoilers!

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke discuss the first few days of the women’s hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The United States and Canada are once again on a crash course towards the gold medal match, but first the two teams will have to face one another in the round robin tournament.

Next, the NHL’s All-Star weekend in Las Vegas has come and gone, with the league’s new outdoor events crashing and burning despite an attempt to make them fun. The real highlight of All-Star weekend was Trevor Zegras, whose stunning blindfolded breakaway challenge goal carried the event as the big highlight reel moment.

Plus, Andrew and Mary make some second half predictions for the rest of the 2021-22 NHL season, from a busy trade deadline to the status of the Montreal Canadiens.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire begin with the complete embarrassment that was the Chicago Blackhawks town hall on Wednesday evening. At the forefront is team owner Rocky Wirtz, whose childish tantrum against two reporters after asking about how the organization plans to protect its players and staff against another Kyle Beach situation showcased that the Blackhawks have not learned anything.

Next, the 2022 Winter Olympics have begun! Both the United States and Canada’s women’s teams have played its first games of the tournament, and Mary and Andrew discuss their predictions for the rest of the event alongside discussing their favorite Winter Olympic sports.

Plus, NHL All-Star weekend is upon us, with a few new events scheduled to take over Las Vegas. Will the NHL’s attempts to spice up the All-Star Game succeed or fail? Oh, and Alex Ovechkin will miss yet another All-Star event, this time due to COVID-19.

Finally, Mary and Andrew end the show with The Book of Boba Fett spoilers and talk on the state of the Star Wars brand as a whole.

Today on the Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire discuss whether or not the New York Rangers are actually this good, because they're balancing one of the best records in the NHL with the worst possession metrics in the league. Are they a paper tiger? Are they all Igor Shesterkin?

Carey Price spoke to the media for the first time in months, talking about his intent to play this season, to stay with the Montreal Canadiens, and the possibility that he may never play again. Andrew tells a personal story about how he understands why Price's perspective may have changed over the last few months while home with his family.

Finally, after talking about the Edmonton Oilers' struggles for weeks, the hosts recognize that the team may have finally turned a corner, but their path to the playoffs may be through their biggest historical rival in the Calgary Flames. Can any division match how compelling the Pacific looks down the stretch?

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke break down Aaron Dell’s aggressive hit against Drake Batherson in a Buffalo Sabres vs. Ottawa Senators game. Though goaltenders get more abuse than anyone on the ice in the NHL, Dell’s actions were unnecessary and injured Batherson, who was set to play in his first All-Star Game.

Next, Brandon Dubinsky spoke to The Athletic about his abrupt retirement from the Columbus Blue Jackets and the NHL in 2019. Andrew and Mary discuss his relationship with the much-maligned John Tortorella and the impact playing hockey has on one’s body.

Plus, the Arizona Coyotes are reportedly negotiating a deal to play at Arizona State University’s new multipurpose arena for the next three to four years. What can be done to stop the Coyotes from being the laughing stock of the NHL at the expense of its fans and is relocation to Houston, Auston, or Kansas City an option?

Finally, Andrew and Mary end the episode with major The Book of Boba Fett spoilers and what it means for the series going forward!

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke once again decry racist acts in the sport of hockey. In the span of one week, Boko Imama of the AHL and Jordan Subban of the ECHL were subjected to racist gestures on the ice in disgusting and disappointing incidents. Jordan’s brother, P.K. Subban, spoke to the media about the fallout and what can come next for the NHL and other hockey leagues.

Next, Andrew and Mary take an early look at the upcoming NHL trade deadline. Though March is still far away, there are some teams — like the Edmonton Oilers — who may make early moves in order to get back on the right track. Mary also comes to terms with the fact that Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux may no longer be on the team by springtime.

Plus, Shane Wright scored a delightful goal in the OHL as Andrew and Mary take a trip down memory lane of some of their favorite goals in the NHL.

Finally, the pair end the show with talk of The Book of Boba Fett, Encanto, and the show moving to Tuesdays and Fridays starting this week!

On today's episode of the Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire recap the continuing saga of sadness that is the Edmonton Oilers, as Leon Draisaitl got into it with reporter Jim Matheson over zoom, which led to the surfacing of a story that is supposedly about Matheson from Georges Laraque. Is the story true? If it is, it's a big deal, but if it's not, then Matheson should be the one getting pissy.

The hosts also touch on the Montreal Canadiens hiring Kent Hughes as general manager to join Jeff Gorton's hockey operations department.

After Mary predicted the Pittsburgh Penguins would miss the playoffs this year, the team has not only defied expectations, but look like a legitimate cup contender again. Locked on Penguins host Hunter Hodies joins the show to explain how the Penguins continue to be so great even while Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have either been absent or at least not great.

Finally, in the pop culture segment the hosts talk about The Book of Boba Fett, and Peacemaker.

On today's episode of the Cross-Check NHL Show, the show is on youtube now! Mary and Andrew take a look at how set the Eastern Conference is compared to the West, and figure out if there's any way a challenger can appear to upset one of the elite eight of the East.

The Oilers are an absolute mess, and Connor McDavid appears to be sinking rather than swimming in a situation that looks more dire by the day. Are the Oilers going to dig themselves out of this? What went wrong? Is there a plausible path forward to fix it?

Finally, Andrew and Mary talk about the recently named All-Star lineups, and debate the biggest snubs this year. Andrew proposes a relatively easy fix for the All-Star Game itself to make it far more entertaining than it currently is, include more of the best players, and keep all teams represented!

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke are back! To kick things off, Marc Bergevin returned to the NHL after being hired in the Los Angeles Kings organization. Though Bergevin may be respected around the league, his legacy is a complicated one.

Next, Evander Kane’s contract was terminated by the San Jose Sharks, making him the hottest free agent on the market. The Edmonton Oilers seem to be frontrunners for Kane, who has a complicated history of his own, as Connor McDavid’s lack of a spine has agitated hockey fans.

Plus, the NHL is in hot water once more after another Rick Westhead bombshell. Two NHL off-ice officials have alleged they were fired for being whistleblowers after reporting a colleague for using racist language while working for the league.

And to end the show, Andrew and Mary discuss what pop culture they’ve consumed since they last spoke before the holidays, including Wordle and Dexter: New Blood.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, 2022 is officially here! Mary Clarke is joined by Scott Matla of Locked on Canadiens to break down all the comings and goings across the league over the last few weeks.

First, the World Juniors were cancelled and the NHL returned to play after a lengthy holiday break, sort of. Not only that, the 2022 NHL Winter Classic went off without a hitch in Minnesota in a frigid but gorgeous game. Even with the prevalence of outdoor games in the NHL, where do our hosts want to see the league play next?

Next, Mary and Scott break down the Edmonton Oilers woes, stemming from team depth behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and poor goaltending. What can be done to lift the Oilers out of this spiral of misery or is it too late for Edmonton?

And finally, the hosts look ahead to 2022 in the NHL, from Jack Eichel's return to the fate of the Arizona Coyotes to Alex Ovechkin's race for history.
