In part 2 of Life on The Spectrum, I chatted with Chelsea Romero. Chelsea’s son Justus, was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 years old. Justus is now 7 year of age, and currently non verbal while he is learning how to use an iPad to communicate.  Justus also has an apraxia of speech and intellectual disabilities / cognitive issues. Justus is a light within not only the Romero family, but within his community as well.

During my conversation with Chelsea we spoke about:

• what the diagnosis process looked like for Justus
• the importance of early intervention
• initial emotions Chelsea felt when she found out about her child’s diagnosis
• what a typical day looks like for Justus (routines, school, etc.)
• the joys and strengths Justus has brought to his families life
• Chelsea shares what it is like to be Justus’ primary care giver
• the biggest obstacles with having a child on the spectrum
• how her family ceases the opportunity to educate other kids about individuals with disabilities so they may be better equipped to create a more inclusive environment

How can we reimagine what that can mean for us all today so that we can move forward positively and consciously.”

This episode was based entirely around the topic of Masculinity - a conversation I have been wanting to have for quite some time now. You might wonder why I am providing men the platform to speak when they have been in the “drivers seat” for so long already...  but the more I navigate my own journey with identity and more specifically feminism, I feel that you can not have feminism without masculinity. I view it is a matter of working from the inside - if we can help men, in turn, change will begin to trickle down and impact other areas and minority groups. 

Andy, Nuke, and myself chatted about:

• how do you define masculinity?
• redefining “toxic masculinity”, and addressing the unconscious masculine
• how KOH help men have these difficult conversations amongst themselves and each other, through remaining curious
• I asked them both what stereotypes around masculinity do you feel are detrimental to society as a whole?
  • “man up”
  • expressing their emotions
• masculine energetic & feminine energetic  
• suppressing your emotions - how does it manifest in our lives if we never face these emotions?
• changing the vocabulary and labels we have around certain words / stigmas (i.e. patriarchy) 
• leading with vulnerability (“You can be vulnerable and it takes nothing away from your masculinity.” -Nuke)
• tips & resources for some one wanting to bring more awareness into their lives and what steps they can take to move forward
• we finished off the conversation with Nuke asking myself what my biggest take away from our conversation was
