    Synopsis

Revi’i of Parashas Noach states, “Go out of the Teivah, you and your wife...every living thing that is with you... bring out with you.” Rashi explains, “If they do not wish to come out, you take them out.” This is a lesson for end of the month of Tishrei and beginning of the month of Marcheshvan: Tishrei, a month full of Yomim Tovim, is like the tremendous spiritual state that existed in the Teivah. But at the end of the month comes the command and empowerment to “Go out of the Teivah” and to spread Yiddishkeit throughout the world – the same world that just experienced a “flood” and that did not experience the spiritual state of Tishrei etc. The “animal” within a person argues: why should he leave the four cubits of Torah and tefillah, and engage in worldly matters, etc.; it desires to remain in the “Teivah.” But one must know that Hashem created man for him to make a dwelling place for Him in the lower realms!

    Synopsis

During the Mabul, for those inside Noach’s Teivah it was like the time of Moshiach; there was peace in the Teivah like the promise, “And a wolf shall live with a lamb…a small child shall lead them.” The lesson is that after Shabbos Bereishis, when “Yaakov goes on his way,” a Jew is expected to leave the shul and study hall, to leave the state of Tishrei, and go out into the world and make a dwelling for Hashem there. He may see that the world is in a shocking state (“bilbul” etc.), with the “many waters” of the Mabul etc. – but he must know that immediately after Shabbos Breishis [comes Parashas Noach] – he is given the power to make a Teivah for himself. So long as he makes the Teivah and enters it, he has no reason to fear the many waters. Moreover: he has the power to bring the entire world into the Teivah, such that “they will not hurt nor destroy,” and he becomes in charge of them.

    Synopsis

It took Noach 120 years to build the Teivah, which seems to conflict with the importance of fulfilling Hashem’s command with alacrity?! And although Noach spent this time warning the people to do teshuvah, seemingly he could have built the Teivah immediately, and then continued to warn them for 120 years? The explanation is straightforward: Hashem commanded Noach to “Make for yourself a Teivah” – meaning he had to build it by himself, which obviously took a very long time, especially considering that he also had to spend that time warning the people etc. The practical takeaway in halacha: The Gemara relates that Sancheriv’s son found a plank from Noach’s Teivah and made it into an idol; based on the above, if that plank was discovered, it would still permissible to derive benefit from that plank: because Noach was told to “Make for yourself a Teivah of gopher wood,” the Teivah belonged to Noach, and “A person cannot make forbidden that which does not belong to him.” The lesson: when it comes to saving people’s lives, someone who is a leader of his generation may argue that it’s not for him to personally deal with “building the Teivah,” and that he has to occupy himself with “warning the people of his generation.” But he must know that if he has been commanded to “Make for yourself etc.,” it is forbidden for him to delegate that job to others; rather he must do it himself. And then he can be sure that it won’t detract from his role of warning the people of his generation etc.

    Synopsis

The custom in Lubavitch on Motza’ei Simchas Torah was to announce, “And Yaakov went on his way”: just like Yaakov came back from his journey spiritually and physically whole – “The deeds of the forefathers are a sign for the children” – so it will be for a Jew after the month of Tishrei when he embarks on the journey into mundane matters throughout the year. On the next part of the verse, “(And Yaakov went on his way) and angels of G-d encountered him” there are two interpretations: (1) Midrash Tanchuma states that it refers to angels, as it says, “For He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways”; (2) the Zohar states that it refers to Hashem (just that it comes down into the world through the angels etc.). And as it says in Tikkunei Zohar, on Yaakov’s return it says, “and angels of G-d encountered him,” meaning they came to him, so to speak, whereas regarding his journey to Charan it says, “and he encountered the place,” meaning he had to seek out Hashem. The reason is because before “Yaakov went on his way,” i.e., before he had performed his service, he had to work hard to find Hashem, whereas afterwards, when Yaakov returned “with his brothers” (his sons), after having established more Jews etc., now it became much easier, and Hashem came to Him, so to speak. Because the “awakening from below” evokes, and compels, as it were, the “awakening from above.” In this vein, on Motzaei Simchas Torah we announce “And Yaakov went on his way”: when one departs from the lofty state of Tishrei (when “You alone shall have them, and strangers shall have nothing with you”) and experiences this descent of “going on his way,” one must know that “From Hashem a mighty man's steps are established, for He desires his way”: there is no need to search for Hashem, as it were; rather, He provides from above all the assistance needed.

    Synopsis

Regarding the last days of Sukkos the Midrash states: “It is analogous to children parting from their father, and he says to them: ‘Your parting is difficult for me; stay for one more day.’” Between Hashem and the Jewish people, no “parting” is possible; rather, Hashem’s concern is that after Yom Tov when everyone goes home, the physical distance between them might result in “your parting,” i.e., separation among themselves chas v’shalom. Hashem addresses this concern by making another Yom Tov – Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. And this Yom Tov is specifically when we complete the Torah: when a person sees that although the Torah is divided into many topics and parashiyos, nevertheless it is one Torah, he remembers that although every Jew is his own holy “parashah,” nevertheless we are all one; ever Jew needs the assistance of another Jew, and of all Jews. Therefore it is specifically at the end of Sukkos (and not the end of the other Yomim Tovim) that the Torah emphasizes this idea that “your parting is difficult for me.” The reason that the Jewish people are dispersed in such a way that there is physical distance between them is because Hashem wants us, His agents, who are “like Himself,” to bring G-dliness everywhere in the world.

    Synopsis

Today’s main Ushpiz is Yosef, while the main Ushpiz of the Chassidishe Ushpizin is the Rebbe Maharash. The connection between them: The unique approach of the Rebbe Maharash was “l’chatchila ariber,” going “over in the first place.” Meaning, even though the way of the world (even according to Torah) is to follow a certain logical order, nevertheless the Jew declares that the order of the inner dimension of Torah is l’chatchilah ariber. And this is also embodied by Yosef, whose name means “increase” – the idea of starting immediately with an increase. Similarly, Yosef’s name comes from the expression “Yosef li Hashem ben acher” (“May Hashem add for me another son”), that is, turning the “other” into a “son” – and doing so in the first place (unlike the usual order, where there is first a regular “son,” and then a “son” who was previously “other”) – l’chatchilah ariber. The idea is not to nullify the world’s conduct, but to the contrary – to transform the world’s existence to the ultimate perfection and goodness, and with joy and gladness of heart. And we increase even more in the joy of tonight’s Simchas Beis Hashoevah over the joy of the previous nights and previous years, as we prepare to continue with the Simchas Beis Hashoevah in the third Beis Hamikdash, literally right now.

    Synopsis

The Four Species correspond to the four types of Jews. (1) The esrog has both taste and fragrance – Jews who have Torah study (“your wisdom and understanding” – they understand and internalize Torah like tasty “food”) and mitzvos (“A decree I have decreed,” which they fulfill with kabbolas ol, an encompassing quality, like “fragrance”). (2) The lulav has taste but no fragrance – Jews whose “occupation is Torah. (3) The hadas has fragrance but no taste – working people, Jews whose primary focus is performing mitzvos in the world (though they, too, have fixed times for Torah study as required). (4) The aravah has no fragrance and no taste – Jews without Torah or mitzvos. And the mitzvah is performed only when all four species, including the “aravah,” are combined. The reason the bracha mentions only the lulav (and not esrog, even though the esrog has taste and fragrance) is because the esrog’s focus isn’t primarily on Torah; we emphasize the lulav because the year must begin with Torah study in a manner of “one’s occupation.” The same applies every day: before going out to the world, one must specifically focus on Torah study.

    Synopsis

The joy of Simchas Beis Hashoevah was associated with drawing the water for the water libation on the mizbeach – the joy of a mitzvah. The Tzedukim, who argued that the Torah must be understood with intellect, agreed only to the libation of wine (which has an enjoyable taste), and joy resulting from understanding, like the joy of Shabbos and Yom Tov which are logical because they commemorate the exodus from Egypt. But they did not agree to the libation of water (which has no inherent pleasure or taste) or joy resulting solely from Hashem’s command. But it is precisely the joy that comes due to Hashem’s command that is unlimited, because it’s not restricted by the bounds of intellect. Regarding this joy it says, “One who did not see Simchas Beis Hashoevah never saw joy in his life,” because it is only this joy that becomes as real to him as something he sees, unlike the joy borne of intellect, which is subject to change.

    Synopsis

It is explained in various places that the Sukkah, which surrounds and protects the person inside it, is akin to the covering and protection of the cloud of Ketores on Yom Kippur. However, whereas on Yom Kippur it can be seen only in the Holy of Holies, on Sukkos it is revealed for all to see, that the mitzvah of Sukkah protects the Jewish people in every time and place (like the Clouds of Honor). This recurs every year on Sukkos, in such a way that “your generations will know” (not just taking it on faith), and in such a way that even the gentile nations can see it. In this fashion, the nations will come to recognize that Hashem is the Master of the Universe, and thus they will treat the Jewish people with honor, to the point that, as we say in Hallel, “All the nations will praise Hashem…for His kindness has overwhelmed us.” And as we then conclude after saying Hallel and Hoshaanos with the Daled Minim (which represents the unity between the four categories of Jews) – “So that all the peoples of the earth will know that Hashem is G-d: there is none else.”

    Synopsis

In response to the talk lately of plans to infringe upon the completeness of the Torah, the people, and the land – I have a heartfelt suggestion: on Sukkos (when the control of the Jewish people over the seventy nations is manifest, as we say in Hallel, “Praise Hashem, all nations…for His kindness has overwhelmed us”), when going out on Mivtzaim, every group should include a Jew from another country, and he should be presented as such. This will bolster the notion, even for a goy, and including for the “goy within you,” that every Jew, wherever he is, who engages in Torah and mitzvos firmly, controls the world around him. They should also include a Jew from the Holy Land, which will further highlight how a Jew is the owner of Eretz Yisrael, to the extent that even a goy sees that here’s a Jew from Eretz Yisrael, and he isn’t deterred by the scoffers, and he’s dancing on Chol Hamoed Sukkos! This will totally negate any thought of infringing upon the Holy Land, and on the contrary – this will mark the beginning of the future era when “Eretz Yisrael will expand to all the lands.” The same should be done in other places where this is being heard by telephone etc. (but it should be done in a peaceful manner and “without provoking” the goy etc.).
