According to UMG, there is no basis in fact to the allegations and they say that they can prove that in court, but considering that there is no evidence to support the allegations, they say that the case should be dismissed via summary judgement.

Furthermore, Marriott contends that McCrary’s claim relies on the 2022 amendment to the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law (VGMVPL), which cannot be applied retroactively to conduct that occurred before the amendment. Citing the recent decision in Doe v. Combs (2024), Marriott notes that corporate defendants cannot be held liable under this statute for actions predating 2022.
