Dr. Michael Ruse is a philosopher of science who specializes in the philosophy of biology and works on the relationship between science and religion, the creation–evolution controversy, and the demarcation problem within science. He currently teaches at Florida State University, where he is Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor and Director of HPS Program. He’s also a very prolific writer, author of books like The Darwinian Revolution, Darwin and Design, and On Purpose.
In this episode, we talk about the scientific and philosophical revolution operated by Darwinism, and the many beliefs that it undermined. We go through how natural selection works; gene-culture coevolution; what are the units of selection in evolution; the concept of species; race and its biological basis; the problems with genetic engineering; and the schism between science and religion.

Dr. Anna Vedel is PhD and Postdoc in the Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Aarhus University, Denmark. Her research areas are in individual differences, personality, academic performance, and study choices.
In this episode, we talk about how personality traits and individual differences influence educational, occupational and life choices. First, we discuss current personality inventories, particularly the Big Five, and their scientific basis and validity. Then, we get into issues related to the gender equality paradox, and how the differences between men and women in personality and educational and career choices exacerbate in countries that are more gender equal. We talk about findings in personality differences across academic majors, and also about the personality traits that are the most stable across lifespan, but also the ones that change a bit.

Dr. Michelle Cretella, MD, is a Board Certified Pediatrician with a focus on adolescent health. She serves as Executive Director of the American College of Pediatricians. She has been a pro-life and family advocate for years.
This is another episode for my running series on gender ideology. I talk with Dr. Cretella about the problem with separating psychological traits from the biological ones, and using “sex” and “genders” as two distinct entities; the historical origins of gender ideology; the diagnosis of gender dysphoria; the adverse and irreversible effects of puberty blockers and sex reassignment surgery; and how to best deal with children that express gender identity issues.

Dr. Valerie Curtis is Director of the Environmental Health Group, a multidisciplinary group researching hygiene, sanitation and water (WASH), at the London School Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is trained in engineering, epidemiology and anthropology and studies human behavior from an evolutionary perspective. She’s also the author of the book Don’t Look, Don’t Touch, Don’t Eat: The Science Behind Revulsion.
In this episode, we talk about the emotion of disgust, and how it might have evolved. How it manifests in us and also other animals, in the form of avoidance behavior. Also, how disgust eventually leads us to avoid people that don’t belong to our social group, and how it might be behind some moral norms related to purity and pollution. Finally, we get to talk about how we can apply this knowledge to acquire better hygiene habits, and the influence of the environment settings.

Dr. Paul Slovic is a founder and President of Decision Research and Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon, where he studies human judgment, decision making, and risk analysis. He and his colleagues worldwide have developed methods to describe risk perceptions and measure their impacts on individuals, industry, and society. He publishes extensively and serves as a consultant to industry and government. Dr. Slovic is a past President of the Society for Risk Analysis. He’s the recipient of several awards, and he was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2016.
In this episode, we discuss decision-making processes in humans, as well as some important biases and heuristics that affect the ways we think. And we also apply this knowledge to how people deal with issues like climate change, medical and environmental problems (like vaccines and OGMs), genocide, nuclear power, and nuclear weapons. We go through a lot of the basics, talking about how biases and heuristics work, slow and fast thinking, and bounded relationality. We then use that to discuss risk perception. Finally, we talk about teaching people about how their minds work, and also the universality (or lack thereof) of these cognitive mechanisms.

Dr. Todd Shackelford is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of Psychology at the University of Oakland, as well as the Co-Director of the Evolutionary Psychology Lab there. He is the editor in chief of the academic journals Evolutionary Psychology and Evolutionary Psychological Science. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science.
In this episode, we talk about family relationships and dynamics from an evolutionary perspective. We focus on conflict between couples, the role of jealousy and some mate retention tactics, including sperm competition for men. We address how monogamy might have evolved. Then, we move on to parent-offspring competition and sibling competition, and how the first might potentiate the second. We also talk a bit about religiosity, and how it might get transmitted between parents and their children. And we end up discussing the possible relationship between kin selection and reciprocal altruism.

Dr. Paulo Gama Mota is Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. He’s also a researcher at the Center for Research in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at he University of Porto (CIBIO). Dr. Gama Mota is very interested in science communication, having been a former Director of the National Museum of Science and Technique, and the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra (2006-2015), and also an organizer of initiatives and science communication exhibitions, as well as citizen science projects. His areas of interest and research include: animal behavior, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology, and evolutionary anthropology.
In this episode, our primary focus is on sexual selection. We start off by talking about how Darwin conceived of sexual selection, the reactions he got to that theory, and then some of the major developments in the 20th century that led to a full-fledged sexual selection theory, that now is at the basis of the study of any aspects of animal behavior. The conversation eventually goes off to group selection and multilevel selection approaches, and we talk about cultural evolution, gene-culture coevolution, and basically the interplay between biology and culture.

Dr. Phoebe Ellsworth is Frank Murphy Distinguished Professor of Law and Psychology, and Faculty Associate at the ISR Research Center for Group Dynamics, at the University of Michigan, US. She is noted for her work in law and psychology. More specifically, she has done research on jury behavior and decision making, public opinion and the death penalty, and eyewitness identification. Her other main research interest is in emotions. Some areas of research in this topic include facial emotions, cognition and interpretation of emotion.
In this episode, we talk about emotions, what is innate and cultural about them, several theories about how emotions work. In the second part, we talk about some particular issues in the legal system, like giving too much weight to eyewitnesses; jury decision-making; and what might lead people to support the death penalty.
