Dr. Rebecca Roache is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London. She teaches practical ethics, logic, philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of language, and early modern philosophy. She’s also been Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Neuroethics and Programme Manager of the Oxford Loebel Lectures and Research Programme, at the University of Oxford. Before that, she was James Martin Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute. Since 2013, Dr. Roache has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Medical Ethics, and since 2007 she has also been a contributor to Oxford's Practical Ethics: Ethics in the News blog.

In this episode, the central topic of discussion is philosophy of psychiatry. We go through some of the difficulties in classifying something as a “mental disease”, and even the social and moral aspects of it. We also talk about certain specific issues, like depression, mental suffering, suicide and euthanasia; human enhancement in psychiatry, the difference between enhancement and therapy, and the ethics behind it; and also when and how people should resort to psychiatry and neuroscience in the penal system, and issue regarding free will and moral responsibility. Toward the end, Dr. Roache also tells us about her upcoming book on swearing.

Mr. Jared Brown is the Lead Counsel at Brown Litigation, based in Toronto, Canada. He’s a member of Law Society of Upper Canada. He participated in the hearing at the Canadian Senate with Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, about Bill C-16.

Here, we talk about Bill 75/XIII, which got passed at the Portuguese Parliament on the 6th of April (2018), and allows, among others things, for 16-year-olds to change sex and name at the civil registry, without the need for any kind of medical report. We go through the main problematic points of the Bill; we compare it to the Canadian Bill C-16, which got passed in 2017; and we also talk a bit about compelled speech at the Law Society of Ontario.

This is the second interview in a series I have planned, in which I will have people who were personally affected by gender ideology, in a way or another.

My guests are Kara Dansky and Meg Kilgannon, both members of Hands Across The Aisle, an organization that tries to fight gender ideology, and brings together people which personally experienced the effects of gender ideology.

Kara is a radical feminist and a political leftist, who views gender identity ideology as misogynistic and homophobic.

Meg is a religious person from the political right, who worries about public schools being contaminated by gender ideology, and the targeting of children.

Again, two very brave ladies that deserve to be heard and have their struggle supported.

Dr. Peggy Mason is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Chicago. She received both her BA in Biology and her Phd in Neuroscience from Harvard. Professor Mason has been on the faculty of University of Chicago since 1992. She has taught undergraduate, graduate and medical students and has received numerous teaching awards. Using her nearly 15 years of experience teaching medical students, Professor Mason wrote a single-author textbook designed for medical students (Medical Neurobiology, Oxford University Press, 2017). Professor Mason's research focuses on the neurobiological basis of empathy and helping.

In this episode, we talk about empathy and helping behavior in humans and other animal models, namely rats. We discuss first how empathy might have evolved, and the neurobiological bases of it, including the roles played by the amygdala, the hypothalamus, the prefrontal cortex and the temporo-parietal junction. We also talk about the flaws with the research surrounding mirror neurons. Then, we talk about the situations that invoke empathy. We also refer to Paul Bloom’s book, Against Empathy, and the difference between emotional empathy and cognitive empathy, and between empathy and compassion. We also briefly refer to how empathy might work in psychopaths. Finally, we talk about oxytocin and other hormones and neurotransmitters that participate in mediating empathic behavior, and the differences between pro-social behavior in humans and other animals.

Dr. David Zaruk is the Risk-Monger. He has been an EU risk and science communications specialist since 2000, active in EU policy events from REACH and SCALE to the Pesticides Directive, from Science in Society questions to the use of the Precautionary Principle. He was part of the team that set up GreenFacts to encourage a wider use of evidence-based decision-making in the EU on environmental health matters. Dr. Zaruk is a professor at Odisee University College where he lectures on Communications, Marketing, EU Lobbying and PR.

In this episode, we start off by talking about the tactics that bad environmental activists use, how they oversimplify complex problems, and their anti-capitalism ideology. After referring to the importance of experts consulting environmental and health policy, we talk about the antiscientific approach that has been dominating the European Union, when it comes to agriculture, energy and the environment. We then move on to the SlimeGate series that Dr. Zaruk has been releasing, and an exposé of how tort law firms, scientists, NGOs, activists and politicians get together to promote pseudoscience and get easy money. Toward the end, we speak about the important difference between hazard and risk, and how fearmongers exploit people’s ignorance about that topic, and also about how the incidence of cancer has been declining over time.
