Dr. Kostas Kampourakis is author and editor of several books about science. He works at the Teacher Training Institute and the Section of Biology at the University of Geneva. He is the author of several books, the latest one being Ancestry Reimagined: Dismantling the Myth of Genetic Ethnicities. He is also the Editor of the book series Understanding Life, published by Cambridge University Press.

In this episode, we focus on Ancestry Reimagined. We talk about DNA ancestry testing, and common misconceptions people have about it. We discuss issues with terms like “nationality”, “ethnicity”, and “race”, and the idea of biological essentialism. We discuss whether it makes sense to talk about genes as being from particular groups of people or regions of the globe. We talk about human populations, and the concept of cline. We discuss the differences between genetic ancestry and genealogical ancestry. We talk about how much human groups really differ genetically, and how we are all ultimately African. Finally, we discuss the idea of a “natural order”, the social consequences of genetic essentialism, and also the positive effects of learning about ancestry.

  • 6 Years and 1/2 + Support on Patreon (Goal: $920/Month)

The channel/podcast is now 6 and a half years old!

This has been a wonderful journey, and I am extremely grateful to every single guest of the show, and to everyone who helped me over the years with financial support, suggestions, and words of encouragement.

For those who are interested in it, I created an account on Goodreads where you can now find the complete list of books that I covered on the show throughout the years: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/178159082-ricardo-lopes

This past April, I launched a website, where you can find all the information related to the show, as well as transcripts for episode 900 onwards.

Each transcript costs me money to make, and since I had to move to Zoom to record the interviews, now I also have that as a monthly expense.

So, if you like what I am doing, I would like to please ask you to consider supporting the show.

I am close to getting back to $900 of monthly support on Patreon, and it would be great to reach $920, and eventually my original goal of $1000/month on Patreon, which would give me more financial stability and help keep the channel sustainable in the long run.

I am leaving the links to my Patreon page and to PayPal, if you can so kindly support me there.

Dr. Monte Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. He teaches and researches Greco-Roman philosophy and its influence on the history of philosophy and science. His main projects involve reconstructing a lost dialogue of Aristotle (the Protrepticus), and demonstrating the influence of Democritus on Hellenistic ethics. He has a growing interest in comparing Greco-Roman philosophy with other ancient wisdom traditions and literatures.

In this episode, we talk about Aristotle, Democritus, and Greco-Roman philosophy. We start with Aristotle, and discuss scientific unity, mechanistic and teleological explanations, the meaning of life, and the relationship between biology and theology. In regards to Democritus, we talk about his cosmology, his sociopolitical philosophy, and his ethics. We discuss Greco-Roman philosophy, and how it relates to other ancient philosophical traditions. Finally, Dr. Johnson tells us about a project of his regarding the translation of Pierre Gassendi’s “Epicurus’ System of Philosophy”.

Dr. Iris Mauss is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.  Her research focuses on emotions and emotion regulation, with an emphasis on their links to psychological and physical health. In her research, she uses measures of emotion experience, behavior, and physiological responding, and combine laboratory, daily-diary, and longitudinal survey approaches.

In this episode, we explore the psychology of emotion. We first discuss what emotion is, its importance to mental health, how emotion relates to cognition, and good and bad emotions. We then talk about emotion regulation, the factors that play a role in it, the role of context, and gender differences in emotion regulation. We discuss the role of culture in mental health, and how to improve emotion regulation, particularly through cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. Finally, we discuss the paradoxical effects of valuing and seeking happiness.

Dr. Tuomas Tahko is Professor of Metaphysics of Science at the University of Bristol. He specializes in contemporary analytic metaphysics, with an emphasis on methodological and epistemic issues: “meta-metaphysics”. He also works at the interface of metaphysics and philosophy of science: “metaphysics of science”. Broader research interests include issues in epistemology, philosophical logic, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and history of philosophy.

In this episode, we talk about meta-metaphysics. We first discuss what it is, and how it relates to metaphysics. We talk about the differences between metaphysics and ontology, the different ways of conceptualizing reality, what mind-independence means, and realist and anti-realist positions in meta-metaphysics. We then go through concepts in meta-metaphysics like substances and properties; substance ontology and process ontology; a “first philosophy”; minimal truthmakers; natural kinds; fundamentality; foundationalism; essence, ground, and modality; and structure. Finally, we discuss whether there are any building blocks to reality.

Dr. Sofia Forss is Ambizione Group Leader in the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of Zurich. Her research interests include animal behavior, comparative cognition, behavioral ecology, animal curiosity and innovativeness, social learning in animals, the captivity effect on animal cognition, developmental influences on cognitive development, and the effects of urbanization on animal behavior. Her research focuses on what makes animals explorative and creative and thereby increase their cognitive potential. In doing so, she studies the development of intelligence and how variation during ontogeny influence curiosity and thereupon following cognitive processes and skill learning.

In this episode, we first talk about neophobia and apes, how they react to novel objects and foods, and differences between wild and captive apes. We then discuss the social information hypothesis; curiosity, and how it is shaped by ecology and sociality; the cultural intelligence hypothesis; and social learning and asocial learning. We also talk about the study of intelligence and cognitive performance in orangutans. Finally, we discuss creativity from an evolutionary perspective, and the conditions that facilitate it.

Dr. Philip Ball is a freelance science writer, with a BA in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Physics from the University of Bristol. He was an editor at Nature for over 20 years. He is the author of many popular books on science, the latest one being How Life Works: A User’s Guide to the New Biology.

In this episode, we focus on How Life Works. We start by discussing what life is, the metaphors people use to talk about it, and living things as generators of meaning. We explore the role of genes and how they work, why context matters, the relationship between genes and traits, and genetic transcription and translation. We discuss the role of proteins, and networks of interaction in organisms. We talk about the cell in the context of organisms and in evolution, and how cells replicate and tissues grow. We discuss what agency is. Finally, we talk about the current paradigm in medicine, and how we can redesign life.

Dr. Vinod Goel is Professor in the Department of Psychology at York University. He is interested in understanding the cognitive, computational, and neural basis of rational decision-making and emotional processing in humans. He is the author of Reason and Less: Pursuing Food, Sex, and Politics.

In this episode, we focus on Reason and Less. We start by discussing how to understand rationality from an evolutionary and

neuroscientific perspective, how rationality relates to the emotions, and the concept of tethered rationality. We talk more broadly about the tethered mind, and the autonomic, instinctive, and associative systems. We discuss how the tethered mind develops. We talk about the role of feelings. We discuss coherence, and a control structure for tethered rationality. We talk about why sometimes it is so hard to change people’s beliefs, and the role of group membership. Finally, we discuss the main implications of the tethered mind model.
