Dr. Matti Häyry is Professor of Philosophy at Aalto University School of Business, Finland. Dr. Häyry’s main fields of interest have been moral and political philosophy and philosophical bioethics. His practical topics in bioethics have ranged from abortion, euthanasia, and resource allocation to genetics, systems biology, and synthetic biology. Theoretically, his work has centered on the main normative doctrines of European moral and political philosophy. He is the co-author of Antinatalism, Extinction, and the End of Procreative Self-Corruption.

In this episode, we focus on Antinatalism, Extinction, and the End of Procreative Self-Corruption. We start by talking about the history of antinatalism in the Western tradition, from ancient Greece to Christianity, and the past 300 years. We discuss other “isms” associated with antinatalism, and we focus on extinctionism. We talk about what constitutes a good life, and arguments against reproduction. We discuss the most popular current arguments for antinatalism, and Häyry’s alternative argument. Finally, we explore the possible routes to an antinatalist society.

Dr. Emily Qureshi-Hurst is Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy at Oriel College and a Junior Research Fellowship at Pembroke College, University of Oxford. She completed a D.Phil at the University of Oxford in Science and Religion (2021). Her thesis examined the theoretical support for a B-theory of time provided by special and general relativity, and re-interpreted Paul Tillich's doctrine of salvation in light of this metaphysical temporal model. She is the author of God, Salvation, and the Problem of Spacetime.

In this episode, we focus on God, Salvation, and the Problem of Spacetime. We start by talking about the metaphysics of time, and we go through how ancient and medieval philosophers understood time, the link between time and theology, and how people think about time nowadays. We discuss how physics relates to metaphysics, and how spacetime relates to theology. We explore questions related to the nature of God, human salvation, and resurrection. Finally, we discuss whether science and theology can be reconciled.

Dr. Charles Roseman is an Associate Professor of evolution, ecology and behavior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He studies the evolution of complex traits.

In this episode, we first talk about complex traits and how we study their evolution, and we talk about adaptations, by-products, phenotypic plasticity, and genetic drift. We discuss the limitations of adaptationism. We talk about the example of the evolution of the cranium in hominins, and hybridization in human evolution. We then discuss group differences, the debate between the hereditarians and the anti-hereditarians, and questions surrounding differences in intelligence and IQ, and the concept of race. We also talk about issues with mechanistic explanations for the anti-hereditarian position, and the role of genes in group differences. We discuss the factors that play a role in variation in body form among human groups, and how developmental processes shape evolution. Finally, we talk about Drs. Roseman and Ocobock’s Scientific American article, “To Understand Sex, We Need to Ask the Right Questions”.

Misinformation Spreads and How to Stop It.

In this episode, we focus on Falsehoods Fly. We start by distinguishing information from misinformation, and we discuss why we should worry about misinformation. We talk about the AIMS Theory of Information and Misinformation. We discuss cognitive errors and motivated cognition. We talk about the reliability of news sources, and go through several examples of

misinformation, namely medical misinformation and the COVID-19 pandemic; scientific misinformation and climate change; conspiracy theories; political misinformation, and misinformation about inequality; and misinformation on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Finally, we discuss how we can prevent misinformation, and how this book connects to Dr. Thagard’s The Cognitive Science of Science.

Dr. Michael Frank is David and Lucile Packard Professor of Human Biology and Director of the Symbolic Systems Program at Stanford University. He studies children's language learning and how it interacts with their developing understanding of the social world. He uses behavioral experiments, computational tools, and novel measurement methods like large-scale web-based studies, eye-tracking, and head-mounted cameras. He is the founder of the ManyBabies Consortium, a collaborative replication network for infancy research, and has led open-data projects including Wordbank and MetaLab. He was a Jacobs Foundation Fellow and has received the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the FABBS Early Career Impact Award, and the Marr Prize and Glushko Dissertation Prize from the Cognitive Science Society.

In this episode, we talk about child development and language acquisition. We talk about infant-directed speech, pragmatic abilities, and similarity reasoning. We get into why children learn some words earlier than others; how they infer the meaning of words before they begin their formal education; and human universals and variability in language acquisition. We discuss why people use polite language. We talk about the use of eye-tracking and head-mounted cameras to study children’s early social and visual environment. Finally, we discuss parenting attitudes, where they come from, and if they translate into actual parenting behavior.

Dr. Nicholas Brown is a Researcher at Linnaeus University, Sweden. He works on developing new research methods in psychology and on applying meta-scientific perspectives on psychology as a science.

In this episode, we start by discussing conceptual and methodological issues with positive psychology and the study of well-being, and go through critiques of Lyubomirsky’s “happiness pie”, and happiness surveys. We also address methodological flaws with studies on the link between genetics and well-being, sadness and color perception, and predicting heart disease from Twitter language. We then discuss where bad science stems from, and talk about incentives, issues with the publishing system, and how bad science goes unchecked. Finally, we talk about the idea of trusting the experts, and rules of thumb to evaluate scientific evidence.
