Dr. Kevin Dorst is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT. He works on epistemology, logic, language, and their intersections. In epistemology he’s interested in what we should think (the belief-credence connection), why we should think it (foundations), and how we should think about what we should think (higher-order uncertainty). In logic, he’s interested in various models of these things; in language, he’s interested the semantics of various statements about them. More recently, he’s been thinking about the connection between epistemology and cognitive science and psychology.

In this episode, we talk about epistemology. We go through topics like: the questions epistemology deals with; what a belief is; the distinction between beliefs, assertions, and guesses; justified beliefs; higher-order evidence, and higher-order uncertainty; epistemic modesty; and when to defer to experts.

Dr. Gillian Forrester is a Professor of Comparative Cognition in the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex. She is the director of the Comparative Cognition Group investigating the behaviors and brain organization of children, gorillas and chimpanzees focusing on how cognitive abilities evolve and develop over time and across species.

In this episode, we talk about the evolution of handedness and how it relates to language and other cognitive abilities. We first define handedness, and talk about how it evolved. We discuss if human hands are more dexterous, and how handedness works in Great apes. We discuss if it is innate, and which environmental factors play a role in its development. We then get into the neuroscience of handedness and how it relates to cerebral lateralization. We talk about how cerebral lateralization might connect to (higher) cognitive functions, and we discuss if there is a relationship between handedness and cognitive ability. We also discuss the relationship between handedness (and motor function more generally) and language, and the biological precursors of language. Finally, Dr. Forrester answers a question from a patron.

Dr. R. Brian Ferguson is Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers University Newark. His expertise lies in cultural anthropology, the anthropology of war, ethnic conflict, state-tribe interaction, policing, and Puerto Rico. His latest book is “Chimpanzees, War, and History: Are Men Born to Kill?”.

In this episode, we focus on Chimpanzees, War, and History. We start by talking about the history of the belief in a “death instinct” and aggressive drives, and what is war. We go through different cases of chimpanzee groups – Gombe, Mahale, and Kibale -, and get into detail about the Four-Year War; human interference; chimp territoriality; the rise of sociobiology; the Imbalance of Power Hypothesis; the Resource Competition Hypothesis; the Human Impact Hypothesis; the Display Violence Hypothesis; when chimps resort to violence; the aftermath of the war; and issues with counting killings. We discuss the best ways to study violence in chimpanzees. We also talk about bonobos, and Dr. Ferguson’s anthropological theory of war.

In this episode, we focus on aging, but also tackle other social issues in the US. We first discuss the obesity “epidemic”, the causes of obesity, and weight stigma. We talk about the relationship between the kinds of physical activity people engage in and perceived health. We discuss the life trajectories and long-term planning of married and single people. We talk about challenges in time management for married couples with children, changes in gender roles, and work-life balance. We discuss challenges disabled people face (during the pandemic, at work, and in old age), and how hard it is being poor/leaving poverty. We talk about racial and ethnic differences in healthcare planning, how perceptions of survival affect it, and end-of-life decisions. Finally, we discuss how widowhood affects people, and the social effects of inequality.

Her work has been published in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In this episode, we talk about stereotypes, criminal justice, and friendships. We discuss what stereotypes are, where they stem from, their different types, ecology-driven stereotypes, their connection to prejudice, and their social functions. We talk a bit about emotions from an evolutionary perspective, and how they apply to mediation contexts. We discuss how people develop perceptions of criminal behavior, and when and why they endorse the death penalty. Finally, we talk about friendships, who we want as friends, and friendship jealousy.

Dr. Carles Lalueza-Fox is Director of the Natural Science Museum in Barcelona. He is the author of Inequality: A Genetic History.

In this episode, we focus on Inequality. We start by talking about the premise of the book, and the current state of global inequality, with its social and political consequences. We get into the scientific tools we can use to study inequality in the past. We discuss sexual selection and assortative mating; if inequality is the result of individual traits or social structures; unequal patterns of reproduction; and the transition from foraging to agriculture. We discuss if the concept of “race” makes sense in genetics. We talk about archaeology; patrilocality and high female mobility; a gender bias in reproduction; and mating systems (polygyny and monogamy). We go through two examples of historical events that shaped population genetics and inequality, including the European colonization of the Americas and the slave trade across the Atlantic, and the Mongol empire. We discuss the impact of gene-editing techniques on science and society. Finally, we talk about the future of inequality.

Dr. Gil Greengross is a Lecturer in Psychology at Aberystwyth University. He is an evolutionary psychologist, studying the evolutionary roots of everyday behaviors and emotions. His main area of research focuses on the evolution of humor and laughter, what makes people laugh, and how humor is used in mating and mate choice.

In this episode, we talk about the evolutionary psychology of humor. We start by discussing what humor is. We talk about humor as a product of evolution, and its signaling functions. We go through the correlation between humor and intelligence, and personality traits. We get into the different humor styles. We discuss how humor is contextual, and why it is normal to sometimes feel offended. We talk about the psychological traits of professional comedians, and stereotypes people have about them. We talk about how people rate their own attempts at humor, and how humor appreciation changes across the lifespan. Finally, we discuss sex differences in humor production and appreciation, and the different possible explanations for them.

Dr. Roskies' philosophical research interests lie at the intersection of philosophy and neuroscience, and include philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and ethics. She was a member of the McDonnell Project in Neurophilosophy, and the MacArthur Law and Neuroscience Project.

In this episode, we talk about neuroimaging studies, neuroethics, and free will. Starting with neuroimaging, we discuss the information we can get from it; what brain activity means; and what neuroscience adds to the study of human behavior. We then get into neuroethics, and talk about agency, going through an example of deep brain stimulation applied to alleviating Parkinson’s Disease; criteria for medical interventions; neuroscience in the courtroom; and moral responsibility. We also discuss issues with how scientists approach free will, including Robert Sapolsky’s approach; conditions where people lack free will; if free will can exist without consciousness; and the idea of “free won’t”.

Dr. Charles Fernyhough is a Professor of Psychology at Durham University, and Director of the Centre for Research into Inner Experience. He has contributed to the understanding of how language and thought are related in child development and beyond. The focus of his recent scientific work has been in applying ideas from mainstream developmental psychology to the study of psychosis, particularly the phenomenon of voice-hearing.

In this episode, we talk about inner speech, imaginary companions, and hallucinations. We start with inner speech, how it develops in children, its connection to language, its functions, its neuroscience, and rumination. We then talk about imaginary companions, why children have them, how they influence how they think about their real-life friends, and their link to inner speech. We also discuss auditory verbal hallucinations, their neuroscience (with a focus on resting state networks and the default mode network); how people sometimes personalize the voices they hear; musical hallucinations; and multimodal hallucinations. Finally, we discuss how to think about distinguishing clinical from non-clinical conditions.

Dr. Andrew Buskell is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Public Policy. His work analyses issues where human cognition, culture, politics, and biology intersect. His current project examines the ontological and epistemic assumptions underwriting cross-cultural comparison and their implications for research and policy design.

In this episode, we talk about cultural evolution. We start by discussing what cultural evolution is, when it started, and its elements. We talk about a systems approach to cultural evolution. We talk about cognitive novelties and how they arise. We discuss cumulative culture, its different types (adaptiveness, complexity, efficiency, and disparity), and the paradigmatic example of complex hominin technologies. We talk about cultural groups, and demographic cultures. We discuss accounts of the origins of hierarchy and inequality. We ask if we need an extended evolutionary synthesis. Finally, we talk about uniqueness in the life sciences.
