Dr. Olivier Morin has a full-time tenured research position at the Institut Jean Nicod in Paris. He is also a Research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Jena, with the Minds and Traditions Research Group. He is the author of How Traditions Live and Die.

In this episode, we focus on How Traditions Live and Die. We first define “tradition” and “culture”. We talk about theories of cultural transmission, like memetics, and forms of cultural transmission, like imitation, learning, communication, teaching, and social influence. We discuss the Theory of Diffusion Chains, and what makes for cultural success. We talk about transmission within and between generations. We discuss the evolution of human culture, and why culture is rare in the animal kingdom. We also talk about human nature, and ask if there could be human societies without culture.

In this episode, we focus on The Pleistocene Social Contract. We talk about aspects of the evolution of human social life, like the suppression of dominance hierarchies, direct and indirect reciprocation, cooperation, intergroup violence, cultural learning, human life history, and interactions between residential groups and rates of cultural innovation. We also discuss how human societies scale up, and the transition to agricultural societies, with hierarchy and inequality. Finally, we ask if this knowledge can be applied to social dynamics in industrialized societies.

Dr. Patrick Lee Miller is an associate professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the author of Becoming God: Pure Reason in Early Greek Philosophy (Bloomsbury, 2012), and co-editor of Introductory Readings in Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy (Hackett, 2015).

In this episode, we talk about Nietzsche and Plato. We start by talking about Nietzsche’s phases in his writings, and ask if The Will to Power should be considered canon. We discuss why we can compare Nietzsche and Plato. And then we get into some of the aspects of their philosophies, and where they diverge and converge, including: the Dionysian, the Apollonian, and the Greek poets; their metaphysics; the Eternal Return, and time as linear or circular; slave and master morality; Plato’s Republic, hierarchy, and democracy; and the differences between the Philosopher King and the Übermensch.

Dr. Allen Buchanan is James B. Duke Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Duke University, and Laureate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Arizona. He has written six books covering such topics as applied ethics (especially bio-medical ethics), social justice, and international justice, including the foundations of international law. He is the author of Our Moral Fate: Evolution and the Escape from Tribalism.

In this episode, we focus on Our Moral Fate.  We discuss how to think about morality from an evolutionary perspective. We get into wrong assumptions people have about tribalism and cooperation. We talk about the Two Great Expansions of our moral circle, involving human beings and nonhuman animals. We discuss how moral progress occurs, and if we should talk about moral change in terms of “progress” and “regress”. We talk about moral reasoning and its limitations. We get into what ideology is from an evolutionary perspective. Finally, we talk about recent tribalism, and scientifically-informed moral institutional design.

Dr. Daniel Willingham is Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. Until about 2000, his research focused solely on the brain basis of learning and memory. Today, all of his research concerns the application of cognitive psychology to K-16 education. He is the author of books like Cognition: The Thinking Animal, Why Don't Students Like School?: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom, and Outsmart Your Brain.

In this episode, we focus on “Why Don’t Students Like School?”. Topics include: why the brain is not designed for thinking, and what people like to think about; why students need factual knowledge, and not just critical thinking skills; the transference of knowledge between domains; the importance of extended practice; individual differences in intelligence; what distinguishes experts from laypeople; learning styles; multiple intelligences; growth mindset; and the impact of technology on education.

Dr. Marjorie Prokosch is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Disasters, Trust, and Social Change Lab at the University of Florida, and an incoming Assistant Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She studies social and health-related decision-making, with an emphasis on how environmental threats and our own condition motivate our perceptions and behavior. In her current role at UF, she is examining how environmental hazards (like hurricanes) and climate change threats intersect with social inequality to impact decision-making.

In this episode, we talk about harshness, the immune system, and climate change. We start with how harshness impacts psychological development, and how it affects risk perception, self-regulation, and close relationships. We talk about the connection between the immune system and psychology and behavior. We discuss how threats of infectious disease change behavior, and the implications for Public Health. Finally, we talk about Dr. Prokosch’s ongoing work on people’s perceptions of climate change, and its relationship with inequality.

Dr. Jon Wisman is Professor of Economics at American University in Washington, DC. He teaches graduate courses in the history of economic thought and economic methodology and undergraduate courses in macroeconomics, European economic history, American economic history, economic development, and labor economics. He is the author of The Origins and Dynamics of Inequality: Sex, Politics, and Ideology.

In this episode, we focus on The Origins and Dynamics of Inequality. We first talk about the different kinds of inequality addressed in the book. We discuss the account of inequality presented in the book, and how it differs from the ones put forth by other economists. We get into the evolutionary bases of inequality, focusing on sexual selection, and the relationship between mating systems and inequality. We walk through inequality in forager societies, the early agricultural states, and European feudalism. We talk about ideology, legitimation theory, and the role of religion. We discuss the advent of Protestantism, and the rise of a new ideology. We talk about how workers gained formal political power starting in the 19th century. We go through the Great Depression and a decline in inequality between the 1930s and the 1970s; and the political and economic changes in the 70s, and the levels of inequality we see today. Finally, we discuss the future of inequality, and possible solutions.

Dr. Nick Enfield is Professor and Chair of Linguistics at the University of Sydney and director of the Sydney Centre for Language Research. His latest book is Language vs. Reality: Why Language Is Good for Lawyers and Bad for Scientists.

In this episode, we focus on Language vs. Reality. We talk about the premise of the book of language as both destroyer and creator. We discuss how language and reasoning are more about convincing people, rather than getting at the truth. We talk about perception and language as two steps of reduction of reality, and the idea of language as an interface for coordination. We discuss how different languages capture different aspects of reality. We get into psychological phenomena like priming and framing. We talk about framing in politics and the media. We discuss the idea of public discourse as a market for justifications, rather than a market for ideas. We go through the functions of stories. We discuss the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Finally, we ask if we can know what are the best ways of talking about things.

He founded the Summer Institute on Sexuality and Society at the University of Amsterdam (1996). In this episode, we talk about sexual orientation from an anthropological perspective. We first talk about the societies Dr. Herdt studied in Papua New Guinea. We then discuss how to study sexuality on the field, how sexual attraction develops, the influence of culture in the development of sexual orientation, and norms regarding sexual behavior. We talk about how to understand homosexuality from the perspective of anthropology. Finally, we talk about factors that impact the mental health of homosexuals, including norms, marriage denial, and discrimination due to the AIDS pandemic.
