We speak about dreams and trauma in the context of Linda’s background in social work with young people and how that trauma can affect the entire course of their lives. She uses therapies including EMDR (eye movement), EFT (tapping) and hypnotherapy among other modalities. She talks about her personal journey with dreams including attending an on-going dream group which she has been part of for 35 years. We then talk about how she works with traumatic dreams starting by making sure that the dreamer feels safe and well-resourced and then exploring the dream itself from the perspective that the dream is not yet finished.
We talk about an email sent from Boston by David about a motif that suggests that after someone has died we might dream about that person holding a baby. We speculate about this concept in the context of reincarnation. We also take a call from Ray from Santa Cruz who shares a dream in which he sees a “stairway to heaven” and is given a plate of food which is just the perfect kind of food for him.

We talked with Dr. Katja Valli about the theory that dreams evolved as a kind of threat simulation which explains why why dreams are often unpleasant as well as why so many animals seem to dream. We also talked about what happens in your brain while you are sleeping but it is surprisingly uncertain what happens in your brain in dreaming vs sleeping more deeply. We also touched in on brain states during lucid dreaming as well as the theory of consciousness during waking life. Dr. Valli also talked about sleep apnea, narcolepsy, false memories, sleep walking and even the extremes of sleep murder.
We took a call from Chris from Felton who spoke about a conversation she had with her son while he was fast asleep.
And we finished by talking about some of the fabulous offerings at the upcoming IASD virtual conference which will be held June 13-17. For details go to the webpage here: https://iasdconferences.org/2021/
I apologize that the audio gets a little rough from 18:30-21:45 when we are talking about brain activity. Please hang on! It gets better.
Bio: Katja Valli is an Associate professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Skövde, Sweden, and a Senior researcher at the University of Turku, Finland. Her research mainly focuses on the function of dreaming and especially the simulation theories of the evolutionary function of dreaming. We explore the idea that healing happens when we resonate with other human beings and with ourselves. Our guest Sarah Peyton talks about how our inner voice is part of our default mode network, the automatic part of the brain that is formed by our experiences, and about how we typically learn model our own parents’ mental habits. We talk about inner voices and how we can tame them by offering them empathy guesses in the mode of NonViolent Communication. Sarah offers suggestions about using these techniques to help people working with their dreams.
We take a call from Jaya from Hawaii who shares a series of recurring dreams about being trapped underwater by huge waves. Sarah works with Jaya helping her to have a sense of accompaniment with these big images and with the big feelings that come with them.
We end with Sarah sharing that she has been incubating dreams of beauty.
Bio: Sarah Peyton, Certified Trainer of Nonviolent Communication, constellation facilitator and neuroscience educator, integrates brain science and the use of resonant language to heal trauma and nourish self-warmth with exquisite gentleness. She teaches and lectures internationally, and is the author of the book “Your Resonant Self: Guided Meditations and Exercises to Engage Your Brain’s Capacity for Healing.” Her second book from W.W. We speak with Chris Doggett about his work around using dream incubation to help gay men find their gifts and purpose. He speaks about how African and Native American cultures recognize that gays are uniquely suited to be tribal gatekeepers who connect with spirit on behalf of the community. Chris talks about his own experiences of coming into contact with his own inner shamaness, alter ego Eartha Madre, and about the connection between performance and ritual and how they create spaces of community. We take a call from Itai Neiger from Israel who as part of Chris’s masters degree at CIIS conducted a pilot study with Chris about incubating dreams to reveal their gifts and purpose. Itai also shared a current dream about men who seemed to be hurting each other. Chris worked with Itai, and we discovered how the dream revealed a rebirth of innocence around intimacy.

Your dreams are not crazy, they are genius! They are multilayered and polysensical, and they will ALWAYS have more to reveal. We speak today with mixed media artist, seminar leader and author Victoria Rabinowe. We begin by exploring the huge range of possible meanings of Snake as an example of why we shouldn’t limit our understanding of any dream image to a simple “interpretation”. Victoria also shared ideas for how you can work with your own dreams through visual arts and through writing drawn from her rich experiences in leading workshops.
We take three calls today. The first is from a writer of upstate New York named Barbara who asks about the variety of ways of working with dreams. The second call is from Julie who shares about her work around a dream in which her “make up” is stolen and what that means to her. Our third call is from Sean from Albuquerque who shares her tender experience of how her dreams have evolved from epic natural tragedies to merely pesky insects as she has learned to work with the images and feelings in her dreams.
Bio: As an artist, author, educator, and dreamer, Victoria has taught over 900 workshops, seminars and retreats world-wide to writers, artists, psychotherapists, spiritual guidance counselors, educators and seekers. Her DreamWork workshops feature powerful tools for personal catharsis, healing, illumination through juicy writing and inspired artwork. She is the award-winning author and illustrator of I HAD THE CRAZIEST DREAM LAST NIGHT: Creative Explorations into the Genius of the Night Mind and soon to be published CONVERSATIONS WITH PSYCHE: A DreamJournal Workbook. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums, galleries, universities and botanical gardens throughout the United States and abroad.

Katherine speaks with Dr. Isaac Taitz about kids and dreams. We discuss how to address kids dreams respectfully and with support knowing that, just as with adults, day time worries often make their way into their dreams. We talk about Image Rehearsal Therapy, a technique that allows us to rescript our dreams which is effective for dreamers of all ages. Dr. Taitz shares several case studies of his work with kids of different ages including work with a teenager where lucid dreaming and IRT were used to reframe his nightmares into ideas about movies. We also touch on night terrors and sleep walking. We end with Isaac sharing his own dream from that morning about a group of jocks trying to make his way into the party with his more bookish friends. He finds a way to feel safe first and then devises a game he can play with the jocks.
Bio: Isaac Y. Taitz, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in Orange County, California, who works with children, adolescents, transition-age youth, and their families for sleep and psychotherapy. Dr. Taitz founded All Mind Health to treat a wide variety of issues and patients of all ages. His clinical approaches involve Parent-Child Interaction Training, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, as well as behavioral sleep medicine to address mood, attention, relationship, and somatic issues. In addition to earning his Ph.D. from Palo Alto University and his B.S. in Human Development with honors from Cornell University, he has worked with students and teachers throughout his training and career, and through academic coaching during grad school. He’s also a published author, researcher, speaker, and the administrator of continuing education for the International Association for the Study of Dreams.

We speak with artist Sheila Asato starting with the Japanese tradition of hatsuyume, which describes the first dream of the new year which is thought to foretell the luck of the dreamer in the coming year. We use the metaphor of dancing for making our way through life. We also speak about how dreams give us information about our bodies. Then we dive into Sheila’s quest for art that viewers could interact with starting with adapting a Japanese tradition of book art and has lately evolved into creating virtual dream art that can be viewed using immersive 3d viewers. We talk about descriptive writing and how the senses are the gateways to the world which help us access our dreams which are themselves highly visually and poetic.
Sheila reads the poem Dreams, by Mary Oliver.
We then hear from two callers who each share their own hatsuyume. First we hear from Alejandra of Minnesota about her dream of being on stage when a dancer is called for. She invites a man standing nearby to be the dancer. Sheila invites the listeners to consider the ways their own lives might be inviting them to “step out”. And then we hear from local dreamer Ray who mentions the book The Chalice and Blade by Riane Eisler. Then he shares his dream about going into a store where everyone is happy and no one is wearing a mask. Sheila mentions the book Pandemic Dreams by Dierdre Barrett. We ended speaking of a device which can read brain states as a start of reading dreams in sleeping people.
Bio. Sheila Asato is a dream artist and certified Embodied Imagination practitioner who is passionate about the arts, dreaming and community development. As a dream artist Sheila consciously incorporates dreaming into her artistic practice. Her favorite media are watercolor, photography, digital painting and Tilt Brush in virtual reality. In 1999, she discovered the book arts and was delighted to find an entire community of artists devoted to exploring the artistic possibilities for the book in the digital age. Since then, she has cut, bent, folded and sewn her paintings together to create unique books that stand alone as works of art.

Shelter in Place, At first there will be a camera moving around the VR piece, but you can use your fingers on your screen or touch pad to move as you like through the work as well. This was created after the first stay at home order at the beginning of the pandemic.
“Dream from the night our governor issues a stay at home order. In the dream I am the size of a mouse and resting under the Kotatsu heater (on the underside of the table). Spring has come. I’m alone but I can see the twinkling lights of other people’s homes. Everyone is staying safe in their own home. Seeing the lights of others sheltering at home gives me comfort.”

It is a musical Dream Journal today. I am excited to debut the music of new artist Paige Kalenian. We played two of her songs: Something New and Deja Vu. We spoke with Paige about her creative process. We also spoke with the creator of the background music of the Dream Journal, fellow KSQD programmer Rick Kleffel. Rick spoke about his early interest in ambient music and how that plays out today as the meditative experience he gets into as he creates the music for each episode of the Dream Journal on Saturday mornings. We even touched on…. aliens? Why not! In the All Caller shows, anything goes!
Christmas on Friday seems to have confused everyone so people forgot that it was Saturday and time to tune into the Dream Journal! It was an All Caller show, but I had lots of time to share my thoughts about dreams including: paying attention to small “feeling filled” moments in dreams; the surprising challenge of opening up to joy and connection; the three centers of the body: head, heart and belly; thoughts on body-based guided meditations such as the ones offered by the Insight Timer app; and finally how dreams and this radio show have helped me “find my voice”.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year! See you on the other side…

We speak with Embodied Dreamwork practitioner Susan Marie Scavo about the power of story in our lives and in our dreams. We talk about how stories are so much more powerful than statistics and also why certain scenes from movies make their way into our dreams. Sue addresses often-forgotten aspects of the Christmas story and how it holds hope and also trauma.
“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.” Joseph Campbell. Sometimes cultural stories like fairy tales and myths can shed light on the deeper meanings of our dreams even if we didn’t know the myth in advance. In that context, we touch on epigenetics and inherited trauma.
Trigger warning! We talk about some disturbing dreams of self-mutilation.
We take two calls, the first from Jim of Bronxville, NY who shares a dream about a man whose cut-off arm was somehow miraculously regrowing. He speaks about a practice called Feeding Your Demons. And we take a call from Talk of the Bay host Christine Barrington who speaks about her Celtic-themed dream about hidden snakes ready to be brought out in the open and arrow slits that bloom into rose-colored stained-glass windows.
Bio: Sue Scavo is a writer, poet and Embodied Dreamwork Practitioner. In all of her practices – dreaming, writing, poetry – her work is concerned with the implied journey, the unspoken (unnoticed) epic that happens in singular (often staggered) steps. The movement of word to word, paragraph to paragraph, image to image in both landscapes.
Sue has been an embodied dreamwork practitioner for over 20 years, working with individuals and in group settings. She has taught and facilitated Dreamwork retreats and writing and Dreamwork retreats all over the US and Europe at such venues as Esalen, Kripalu and Hollyhock. She is the co-founder of Students of the Dream with her partner Bill St. Cyr. Sue also holds an MFA in poetry. Her poems have been published in journals such as Asterix, Poet Lore and anthologies such as What Have You Lost edited by Naomi Shihab Nye.
