  • The Army just appointed its first lead trial counsel, with big implications

The Army recently appointed its first ever lead trial counsel, a Senate-confirmed one-star general. Her job will be to prosecute cases of murder, rape and sexual assaults. It is all part of a new legal framework for such cases. For analysis, Federal Drive host Tom Temin talked to former Air Force judge advocate general and founding attorney of JAG Defense, Grover Baxley.

  • Guard members and reservists are losing out on a key benefit each year

Members of the National Guard and military reserves can have complicated lives. Now it turns out, they often lose out on financial benefits they're entitled to from lenders. That's according to a study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. To take a closer look, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with Charles Goldman, a senior economist and Patrick Brick, a policy analyst at CFPB's Office of Servicemember Affairs.

  • Federal records chief says ‘culture of paper’ persists at agencies

For the last couple years -- decades in some sense -- agencies have been working to transition to fully electronic records. The pandemic and other challenges got in the way. The White House and the National Archives have pushed back a digital deadline to the summer of 2024.

For the latest, Federal News Network’s Justin Doubleday spoke with National Archives and Records Administration's chief records officer, Laurence Brewer.

  • With the right tools, there's no compelling reason for everyone to get back into the office

Federal Drive host Tom Temin is getting two points of view on the telework. He spoke with a retired federal sales executive, who made the case for a generalized return to the office and, here, with Mika Cross, a former federal manager who specializes professionally in workplace issues, for a different point of view, championing the need for better collaboration tools for a largely remote or teleworking workforce.

  • OFPP bringing all contracting officers under one training, certification standard

The Office of Management and Budget is solving two long-standing issues for contracting officers with the stroke of a pen, and months of effort. A new memo obtained by Federal News Network details how the Biden administration will bring the entire federal government — Defense and civilian agencies — under one education and training standard for contracting officers.

  • USDA has recovered from attrition, but new research staff is less diverse, less experienced

It took the Agriculture Department two years to recover from mass staff attrition in 2019, but the agency is still facing challenges from the decision to relocate two of its major research facilities. The larger problem now, beyond successfully restaffing the Economic Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, is dealing with a loss of employee experience and staff diversity, according to a January 13 from the Government Accountability Office.

  • The case for returning to the office so you can collaborate

When D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser urged the federal government to either occupy its space or clear out, she touched a nerve. Debate over whether people should mostly be in the office or telework often centers on one issue: Which is better for collaboration and team cohesion? Both agencies and contractors are wrestling with the same questions. Here on the Federal Drive, host Tom Temin, is presenting two points of view. Here Temin is hearing from Paul Smith, a long-time federal sales executive, who has worked with nearly every agency at one point in his career. Also look for Temin's interview with Mika Cross, a former federal manager, who specializes professionally in workplace issues and champions the need for better collaboration tools for a largely remote or teleworking workforce.

  • How the taxpayer advocate puts together that giant report every year

Maybe it's because nearly everyone pays taxes, but few annual reports get more attention than that of the taxpayer advocate's annual report to Congress. Especially this year, as the IRS does two things: Emerges fully from the pandemic and anticipates a big funding boost, thanks to recent legislation. To get the story behind the report, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with Erin Collins, the National Taxpayer Advocate.

  • What 2022 returns on TSP funds say about the year ahead

By nearly all measures, 2022 was a terrible year for the average investor. Inflation and a host of badly received public policies sent both stock and bond markets in bear territory. For a review and some things to think about for the the year ahead, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with certified financial adviser Art Stein.
