The First Gen Hunter Podcast

Oh boy are you in for a great conversation. So good that I think you will consider it the best deer interview you've heard in a long while. We talk all things deer ranging from hunting tactics to antler mysteries, and CWD. All of it has to do with why Iowa is the place to beat for hunting whitetails.

Most hardcore hunters have dreams of hunting the biggest cervid species at some point in their lives. I think many of us think this dream will have to come true in Alaska or Canada, which makes sense. But we can't forget about New England as a very viable, and much less expensive option for fulfilling our dream hunt. Jamison Grady is a native Maniac who has spent his life in the forests of Maine hunting deer and moose. In this episode Jamison fills us in on what you can expect for this hunt of a lifetime.

Food plotting is a major aspect of the hunting world, and much of it is as Doug Duren says "bringing sand to the beach." Now of course all popular food plot species get some of the desired effect, but what if we could get even more out of our food plotting efforts. That's where perennial food plots come in.

I will always hold to the belief that good shed hunters are the folks you want to learn from for locating game. They spend so much time observing and learning the habitat of the animals they are trying to collect antlers from that they are just bound to learn where these critters spend their time. Weston McArthur is one of these people. He runs a popular YouTube channel known as Rise and Shed, and although sheds are his main passion, hunting is of great importance to him as well. Listen in to several great stories, including one on his survival during an unexpected Montana blizzard while elk hunting, and plenty of tips on finding elk while hunting them.

We are already into the second week of August which is a reminder of how fast hunting season is approaching! It will be here before we know it and we don't want to be caught under prepared. So for this episode I put together a todo list to keep myself and everyone else who reads it on schedule for deer season.

If you hunt long enough you're going to consider chasing after elk. It's just a part of the maturing process of a big game hunter. Planning such a hunt takes quite a bit of work. Elk are earned the hard way. You have to go into their country and weather their storms- literally. If you want to be able to stay on the mountain long enough to achieve one of the ultimate goals for every big game hunter, you will need the right gear that will allow you to stay there. Alex Gruin of East 2 West Hunts has been hunting elk for a long time and he shares his knowledge on what you need for the different elk season each fall.
