Here on my podcast, we talk a lot about doing what you love. I am the first to say an unhappy journey will never lead to a happy ending. And that is a fact.

As humans we look for ways to stay in our comfort zone. Our primitive brain wants to keep us safe, and it conspires with our logical brain in the form of thoughts to keep us in that safe little comfort zone. 

When you start to venture out of your comfort zone your logical brain will offer you thoughts specifically around convenience, preferences, and intuition and/or logic to keep you stuck in the comfort zone.

Your marketing, and especially your social media marketing, is like a bank account. Every time you create content, you're creating a deposit, or you're making a withdrawal. We’ll call it the Bank of Social Capital, because you're creating capital within your audience. 

When you give your audience what they came for, you make a deposit. 

And when you make an offer to your audience – when you ask them to do something or you give them information about something they could purchase from you – you're making a withdrawal from that Bank of Social Capital. 

Both things are good. Banks are useful for deposits AND banks are useful for withdrawals. But you have to keep your deposits higher than your withdrawals to stay in good standing at the bank.

Your thoughts create your feelings,

This is the basis of the Self-Coaching Model by Brooke Castillo, which is a powerful tool for results-oriented behavior change. It teaches us that we can control our outcomes by controlling the thoughts and reactions we have about current circumstances.

Most of us operate every day from the place of action, without intention around the thoughts or the feelings.

But in very real ways your thoughts and feelings create the mood and temperature of your public-facing presence. Your vibe attracts your tribe, and that vibe is built from your thoughts and feelings. And that tribe is your pool of potential buyers.

So your vibe will either attract perfect future buyers, or something else. And the choice is yours.

Today we are going to talk about the thoughts you and I have about our potential buyers. What are the stories you are telling yourself about your industry, your customer pool, and your marketing? What assumptions are we making? And, how are those assumptions serving or not serving us?

Let’s talk about the five controls you have in any situation in life that you can adjust in order to effect change. Adjusting one of these controls will affect the others. They're all interrelated.

When I was in college I lived in a house with five other students. It was like a constant slumber party with your best friends + weekend disco dance parties. I loved it.

Until I didn’t.

One day I realized I was 3 years into my college education, taking on student loan debt as fast as they would hand it out, and not even close to graduation.

Unless I wanted to live with 5 roommates forever, I had to take a hard look at what was really going on with my life.

So I transferred schools and moved across the country by myself.

Today’s show is a bit more ‘mindset-ish’ than I normally do. And here’s why - business building takes more energy than you have ever devoted to anything. You are building something that does not currently exist, and most of us are doing that from little or no resources.

It’s super important to recognize that building your business requires you to conserve certain amounts of whitespace around your schedule and your energy because if you don’t then it just won’t happen.

So I want to talk today about the skill, the art, the science, of being able to do something that is new or unknown or unpopular. Most of us just don’t run in a circle of people who are running successful businesses, so being able to do something that is different than the people around us is crucial to an entrepreneur.

You have to identify yourself as a person who does the things that a successful business owner does if you want to have a successful business. The way you spend your time and energy are different than non-entrepreneurs.

If it were convenient, or easy, or intuitive to build a successful business, then everyone would have it.
