What happened to The Stryder?
Scottie Redix joins Gary Cantrell for a deep dive into the rise, evolution and eventual breakup of one of the most fascinating bands to come out of the early-2000s emo and post-hardcore scene.
Scottie goes all the way back to Yearly, growing up and making music with Peter Toh, and Eben D'Amico leaving for Saves the Day before The Stryder took shape. From there, he tells the story of the original lineup, signing with Equal Vision Records, recording Masquerade in the Key of Crime, the infamous lack of bass on the finished record, and the relationships and conflicts surrounding the band during that era.
The conversation also gets into the dramatic transition toward Jungle City Twitch, lineup changes, Durijah Lang joining the band, Equal Vision's reaction to the new direction, touring through the aftermath of 9/11, the potential move to Drive-Thru Records, and watching bands like Brand New, Taking Back Sunday and Bayside explode while The Stryder's own future became increasingly uncertain.
Scottie also looks back on the breakup, life after The Stryder, Casanova Brown, and whether a real reunion could ever happen.
