President Trump was in Commerce Georgia last night with his slate of candidates for races across the State. Speakers included Marjorie Taylor Greene, David Perdue, Herschel Walker, and of course Trump himself. One of the more notable moments was David Perdue appearing to egg on a “lock him up chant,” this time referring to Governor Brian Kemp for “stealing the election in 2020.” 

The State legislature is rapidly approaching its Sine Die or final day on April 4th, and we thought we’d talk about some of the major takeaways from this session as we head into the spring and campaign summer.

The field is set. Qualifying for this November’s elections in Georgia ended Friday at noon with candidates getting their names on the ballot up until the last minute. The panel goes through the highlights and talk at length about the number of candidates and what it might mean for each party.

Next up, we get into some legislation as the House passed its version of “Constitutional Carry” on Friday, and with it, an all-time “Gurtler Alert!” from Rep. Josh McLaurin.

Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! This week’s episode is largely focused on education issues under the Gold Dome, most notably school vouchers and anti-CRT legislation.

Kicking off the show is a discussion involving a conservative national advocacy group, The American Federation for Children, who sent out mailers related to school vouchers to at least 16 Republican legislative districts. It backfired in a big way, as it definitely looks like it ended up sending the wrong message to Republican leadership and Speaker Ralston has said the issue is now dead.

Next up is Anti-CRT legislation. It has now been rebranded to target “divisive concepts” and seeks to limit how race is taught in Georgia Schools.

Also on the so-called Parents Bill of Rights, which passed the Senate last week and moves onto the house. Senate Bill 449’s biggest impacts would be on parents’ ability to review instructional materials and allow an opt-out from sex education. The specific provisions around material review, it should be noted, are already codified law in Georgia.

It’s a jam-packed show today as the crew jump into updates on this year’s legislative session, starting with the Speaker’s mental health bill. It is destined for bipartisan support, but what roadblocks may still stand in its way?

Sen. Jeff Mullis is backpedaling on a bill he introduced (with 17 co-sponsors) that would have effectively banned public schools from requiring vaccines. He says he got bad legal advice, and it was intended to address Covid vaccine mandates, but some on the panel aren’t buying it.

And last up for session – for now – is the shenanigans happening in Gwinnett County, which show regular Craig Kidd describes as an exercise in raw political power. What’s next for the bill, and do can Democrats in Gwinnett do anything to stop it?

The last topic of the day involves a recent AJC poll that shows that a majority of Georgians are not in favor of the Governor’s proposal for constitutional carry, and would prefer that Roe v. Wade stand as is. But is it bad news for the Governor? The panel discuss.
