Kicking off the show this week, the panel take a look Democratic field for next year’s statewide races.

Also, a couple of newsworthy updates for regular listeners if the podcast: Suspended Insurance Commissioner Jim Beck was convicted of fraud and money laundering, smoothing Interim Commissioner John King’s race for a full term. And also, surprising no one, Speaker Ralston announced that he will not be challenging Raphael Warnock for US Senate.

Governor Kemp announced his plans to call a special session to deal with violent crime. He is proposing to spend $2 million to pay for 20 new state troopers and $1 million to double the size of GBI’s anti-gang task force. The announcement follows Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced plan to invest $70 million in fighting Atlanta’s recent crime wave.

Joining Preston on the show today is Georgia House Representative Chuck Martin (R – 49) to discuss HB 617, a bill Rep. Martin authored that would allow athletes in Georgia to receive compensation for the use of their name, image or likeness, contingent action from Congress, the NCAA or other athletic association acts.

A unanimous Supreme Court ruling in June stated that college sports organizations violate antitrust laws by limiting education benefits to their athletes and in turn has enabled Rep. Martin’s bill to become law.

It's a big win for students across the country who have been arguing for decades that the organization for which they are a part of profit off their athletic feats without appropriate compensation.

Preston and Rep. Martin discuss the political environment around the issue, what has changed in recent years that have led us to this moment and what future actions may be in store.

The panel kicks off the show discussing the Biden justice department’s lawsuit over Georgia’s new elections bill, Senate Bill 202. In a statement they allege that the bill was passed with “discriminatory purpose.” Governor Kemp quickly condemned the suit, calling it a “politically motivated assault on the rule of law.”

There is also of course Candidate Corner, where the discussion involves Rudy Giuliani’s fundraiser for Republican candidate for Governor, former State Senator, Vernon Jones. Also, State Senator Bruce Thompson announced he is running for Labor Commissioner, which makes for a crowded field to challenge incumbent Republican Mark Butler.

And the last subject before Overhyped/Underhyped is about the news that the agribusiness company Archer-Daniels-Midland reportedly sold Sonny Perdue, the University System of Georgia’s proposed candidate to be its new chancellor, property worth over 5.5 million dollars for just 250,000 just before he was appointed commissioner of agriculture.

On the show today Preston is joined by Craig and Megan to discuss a wide range of political issues.

Up first, the panel touch on the announcement that occurred RIGHT after the recording of the last episode: Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black entering the race to challenge incumbent US Senator Raphael Warnock (D) in the 2022 election. 

In other election news, there were two special elections in Georgia to discuss. One for HD34, vacated by Rep. Bert Reeves. Devan Seabaugh (Rep) and Priscilla Smith (Dem) advance to runoff. Surprisingly the Kennesaw Councilmember David Blinkhorn only pulled 12 percent of the vote. The two Republicans pulled a total of just under 60 percent of the vote.

Also, HD156 is advancing to a runoff between two Republicans, Leesa Hagan and Wally Sapp.

Both elections will be held on July 13th.

And finally, former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is entering the race to get his old job back after current mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced she would not be seeking re-election.

Redistricting meetings have begun, the state GOP had its annual conference, and the panel play Overhyped/Underhyped and Play Along-At-Home.
