College Conversation:

Vanderbilt University first generation students join us and tell their unique stories and share their paths that led them to where they are now. Safa shares her experience as a first generation international student and how the American system of education offers more flexibility to try new things. Bitania reveals that she applied to 22 different schools but always knew that Vanderbilt was the one. Shun discusses balancing school work and family life and how being a local student helped her discover new parts of her own city. Toby reflects on what she thinks got her into Vanderbilt and concludes that her personal essay, which talked about her religious upbringing, really made a difference. The panelists also reference lots of helpful resources on campus for wellness, tutoring, and cultural community.

Henessy and Sherell join us to talk all about their experiences at Cornell University. They are two very involved and active women on campus with their sights set on law school after graduation. Sherell is a black belt in karate and has the trophies to prove it! They both hold leadership positions for campus organizations. Not only that, but Henessy is a returning RA and Sherell is an incoming RA. They have certainly found their places to engage with the community and find friends. Henessy shares her experience as a first generation student and the challenges she faced while applying for college. They both share their experiences being women of color at a majority white school and how organizations and communities for BIPOC at Cornell tend to reach out and find you. They share moments of vulnerability, doubt and how they pushed through to find fulfillment and success.

Jamal tells a story about how he applied to Duke essentially on a challenge from someone he knew who said he couldn’t get in. Sarah shares how despite her high school education being so focused on getting students into college, she still had no concept of how the timeline for college applications worked. Taylor talks about how she first had no idea she could use her first generation status as a tool for college because everyone around her in her community was of the same background. All the panelists are members of DukeLIFE which is an organization based around first-gen student engagement. They also share how they got involved in many of the other organizations that Duke has to offer and how organizations are trying to face the challenges of this year to engage incoming students amid COVID.
