  • EP23 – [After Show] The Art and War of Forgiveness
In this episode, Chris and Sarah dissect their learnings and ‘aha’ moments from Chris’ amazing conversation in Episode 23 with Andrew O'Brien.
With no pun intended, Andrew is a guy who walks the walk.
For a man in his early thirties, he has already lived a few lifetimes worth of tragedies, trauma, absolute unfathomable experiences...and redemption. He has learned that everything happens for a reason and that hard times don’t have to define you. Last week, Andrew walked nearly 100miles from his hometown in Texas to visit his mother, in jail, who is serving 60 years for famously murdering his step-father. Walking in the intense Texas summer heat over 5 days may have broke him physically but freed him mentally.
While this incredible journey may have closed one chapter, it begins a new one. Andrew is on a mission to help those for those wanting to learn to forgive their past in order to create a better future.

  • EP22 – The Art and War of Forgiveness With Andrew O’Brien
Have you ever been hurt by someone?
Have you ever thought what that person did was SO BAD that you wished great pain and suffering on them? That you would NEVER forget that and could NEVER forgive them? Or maybe the experience wasn’t that intense but you still hold a grudge and ill will towards the other person that harmed you.
The truth that we sometimes forget is that when WE hold on to those kind of thoughts, wishes or feelings, that it’s only us that is affected. It’s like the adage that holding anger towards someone is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die. We are the ones suffering when we hold on to negative emotions.
So, If we have the ability to hold onto those hurtful experiences, often years afterwards, then we must also have the capacity within us to let them go.
However, that is often easier said than done.
Sometimes we get so close to our own situation, we buy into our own version of events we just can’t step back and get perspective on alternative ways to handle it. Sometimes we need to look to another example to show us the way. And sometimes we come across such an extreme example, we realize our situation pales in comparison -- it teaches us a whole new paradigm for dealing with difficulties, drama, trauma and tragedy.
Today, I’m honoured to bring you that extreme example in the form of Andrew O’Brien.
Andrew shares his incredible...actually, unfathomable and unimaginable story of a life of drama and trauma and how he has finally learned to free himself of the past.
I will let Andrew provide the details and in fact, I want to give you the listener a heads up...in the first few minutes of this conversation, Andrew gives a brief history of his life up until 22 years old. He goes fairly quickly but you need to listen. Everything he says is true...even though it’s unbelievable. From growing up in an environment of prostitution, going off to war in the middle east, attempting suicide and if that wasn’t enough, his mom became a national headline and featured on popular US TV shows of 48 hours and 20/20 as “the black widow of Texas” when she murdered Andrew’s Step-father and tried to frame his brother.
But the story doesn’t end there. Through all that, Andrew has demonstrated immense inner strength and learned to forgive. His message is as powerful as it is clear.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a broken bone, come from a broken home, were a victim of a broken promise or a broken heart, … or even if it was a more serious trauma or life-altering crime that affected you. This episode is one you probably need to listen to a couple of times.
    Enjoy the conversation...

  • EP21 – The Power of Saying “No”
One of the biggest challenges I see my clients struggling with is setting proper - or effective - boundaries.
Boundaries to protect your time, your focus, your energy and productivity.
And one of biggest factors within that challenge is that people don't say "no" enough. They take on too much, over commit to things that don't matter, are too easily pulled into other people's priorities and demands.
In this episode Chris breaks down four common mistakes people make that prevents them from saying no and offers four counterpoints to make it easier to set boundaries for yourself.

  • EP20 – [After Show] Love, Leadership and Being Human At Work
In this episode, Chris and Sarah dissect their learnings and ‘aha’ moments from Chris’ amazing conversation in Episode 19 with Helena Clayton.
Helena is a leader of leaders. In her practice as a leadership development consultant, Helena acts as a coach, thinking partner and critical friend for senior executives.
While she brings a variety of researched-backed approaches to her conversations and interventions, what she ultimately does is help leaders have greater, positive influence by becoming better, more authentic versions of themselves.
Her curiosity to explore what’s going on beneath the surface has exposed unfortunate reality that all-too-often businesses today are valuing efficiency at the expense of humanity.

I’m guessing you’ve had the experience of being online and engaged in something -- an article, video, blog whatever it might be...and from there you click on a related link and then another link and another link and suddenly you’re in a very different place and have no idea how you got there and kick yourself for wasting time.
But sometimes you follow the rabbit hole and end up somewhere fascinating, that you didn’t know existed and it changes the way to see the world and what you want to experience.
Recently I had that experience...a rabbit hole of links that led me to Helena Clayton. Helena is a leadership development expert and pioneer in looking at love as a leadership competency and the uncomfortable nature of dealing with human emotions in the workplace.
This is a conversation that is needed more and more in our modern world of constant pressure, pace and relentless demands on the people to deliver the business results. Fundamentally, you can extract emotions from people and expect them to excel at work. We are emotional creatures in emotional times and the more leaders -- the more YOU learn to be comfortable, skillful and aware of how emotions shape the performance and productivity of people, the more you will emerge as a leader people want to be associated with.
We explored a variety of truths and insights from Helena’s research and I encourage you to use this conversation as a catalyst for your own growth and understanding of your emotions and your relationship with love.

When's the last time you stopped to think about your thinking?

How to turn limitations into possibilities
    ---
What might be my first exposure to the incredible capacity of our hyman potential, is lying on my sofa as a young kid watch athletes compete at the highest level. Sure, there were the common team sports of hockey, basketball, football and baseball. Fun to watch and play but not exactly remarkable. But for me, the Olympics were another level. Especially the less common sports and events like ski jumping, biathlon or the marathon...those seemed special, fascinating and very remarkable. I marvelled at how people would put their body into extreme conditions, look like their were on the verge of death but fiercely committed to keep pushing.
Yet there was one sporting competition that was next level. Was beyond my comprehension. Was other-worldly. I simply couldn’t wrap my head around how that can be done. I’m talking about the Ironman triathlon. A one-day competition consisting of a 2.4m swim, 112mi bike ride, and a full 26mi marathon...in the heat! Watching men and women push the limits was equally inspiring, inconceivable and impossible. Those people must be from another planet...or so I thought as a teenager.
Since then, in the 20+ years gone by, I learned a lot of what it takes to achieve the impossible and that vast capacity – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually – lies within each and every one of us to face enormous challenges, overcome incredible odds and achieve amazing things. Especially things that we used to believe could never happen to us.
So I am honoured and blessed to bring you today’s guest, Rajan Thananayagam.
The facts would tell you that Rajan has now competed in 18 Ironman triathlon races, most recently at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. That alone is incredibly impressive. You might think that Rajan is a genetically gifted man who must have unlimited resources, a support team and a flexible lifestyle. But wait until you hear his story. Wait until you understand where Rajan started and where he is going.
Normally I would tell you to be sure to take notes and capture your key ideas from our guests. But today, I emplore you to sit back and just listen. Just listen to the truth -- of what we...of what YOU...are capable of. Of the depth of potential, resilience, compassion and love you have within you. And maybe just maybe, Rajan’s story will spark something in you and fuel you to lift the lid on your “perceived limitations”.
This conversation with Rajan stirred something in me...and I hope it stirs you too. Enjoy the conversation….
