  • #31: The Disgusting Patient: How Our Self Identity Shapes

What you think you are is what you do.   I was going to share with you the 4D planner on this podcast, but I thought this story was more fitting. Oddly, it leads well into the concept of goal setting, which will be the next podcast.

In this episode, I’ll share the interaction I had with a patient, the disgusting patient. I won’t say too much more and let you listen to the episode; I’m sure you’ll find it unique.

I’m also sharing with you a little bit about myself and how I was a bumbling fool when I was learning magic. I’ve also said some stupid things when I was 18 years old, and I’ll reveal them here. Note, I still do say some silly things, but fortunately, I have a teenage daughter who keeps me in check.    As well, you’ll see why I fought with my mentor, the genius who taught me magic, and why I broke up the friendship.

I’m not going to give too much away in this description, but I will say the concept of self-identity is a huge fundamental principle in human behaviour. It’s not something we consciously think about daily, but our self-identity, the way we see ourselves, is the most significant influencer in guiding ALL of our thoughts and behaviours.

  • #30: Balancing Tasks vs. Goals Setting vs. Being Present

In the new year, there is always a buzz to start goal setting; but how do we DO effective goal setting and not task setting whereby we cross items off on our 'to do' list (which never ends). I know I've been in the trap of doing so many tasks daily and still feel that I've not done anything worthwhile. Have you experienced this? I know many of my colleagues share this feeling.

The truth is we do have to accomplish tasks. We have certain social and financial responsibilities, but the constant accomplishment of unfulfilling tasks can lead to a life of endless tasks without any purpose and attention. We may be accomplishing things, and even doing them well, but they may not be the essential things. One of the biggest myths today is that - requiring a lot of time to do something doesn't make it important, and doing many things doesn't make it important. Here's the big one: doing something well doesn't necessarily make it important either.

This podcast talks about why and how you can, and should, focus on your inner state so that you wake up with a desire to achieve something purposeful — nurturing our internal ambition to achieve something meaningful.

When you create that internal energy of desire and passion, you wake up with an overwhelming abundance to do things. Then all you want to do is think of how you can contribute and do more for yourself and your community. That's what I'm advocating here. Learning and creating systems to keep your internal energy and passions alive.

     * I'm dedicating this podcast to my father-in-law, who recently passed away on Jan.3, 2020. He will be greatly missed and embodied the notion of being present with people when he was with them. He was a great grandfather and wonderful father-in-law who was always learning and growing and was always present with the people he was with.

  • #29: How will You get what You want this Year?

Welcome back to a new year! I hope you had a chance to rest, rejuvenate and reconnect with family and friends. For many of us, this new year is an opportunity to rethink about what is worth giving our attention and time to.I don’t know about you, but I find a new year exciting and trepidatious at the same time.

I look forward to what will happen and how I will show up as an individual. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way.  The beginning of a new year is like having a new notebook which has to answer at least one vital question- how will we feel this year? Will we feel better in all areas of our lives and how will we handle the challenges that come up along the way?

If we don’t prepare ourselves, how will we react in uncertain times?  How do we have more of the positive emotions such as enthusiasm, confidence, connection, inspiration, laughter, grace, and abundance?  How do we get more energy and vitality in our lives more consistently? Those are some important questions that I’ll address in this quick win podcast.  Asking great clarifying questions helps motivate us to create critical paths and mindset towards living a life of joy, prosperity and purpose. Questions are the answers.

  • #28: Description How will you remember this year?

Can you recall your important highlights this past year? How about 2-3 years ago? What about lessons that made you better? I used to have trouble with this, but changed the way I end the year which changed the way I started the following year.

In this quick win episode, I’ll share the way to do this, the key questions to ask. This simple strategy will set you up to feel better about the year even if the year been less than ideal or even crappy.  Let’s face it, we all have those periods in our lives, it’s inevitable, it’s part of the human experience.  I’ll also share with you the two quotes that kept me moving forward this year and are still impacting my decisions today.  And finally, I want to say, with all my heart, that I hope you will be able to spend time resting, and recharging charge yourself and spending time with friends and family. I’ll be taking a couple weeks off from the podcast to do that and I’ll re-join you in the beginning of January.

Most importantly I want to send my full heartfelt gratitude to you the listener - for listening, connecting and wanting to improve.

I hope you join me in making your next year the best it’s ever been! May you be celebrating your new aspirations at this exact time next year!

    With health, hope and happiness,

    • You are not the voice you’re      born with. You can change your voice easily
    • The Different Voice Types
    • Common Simple mistakes people      make when speaking and how to correct it
    • How to use pitch, pace, tone,      melody and volume correctly when you speak
    • How we’ve destroyed the English      Language and how to fix it
    • How to use periods and commas when      speaking (this point is a big one)
    • The best part is that his strategies to be more effective and brilliant, are ridiculously simple.

I am confident that by the end of this interview, you will use some of his tools to be better, no matter how good you think you are. There is a reason he’s one of the #1 Influencer in changing people’s lives.

Roger also shares with me some of his very personal struggles. Things he doesn’t share with too many people.

If you ever thought “should I listen to the whole interview, this is one you definitely want to as there are a few wonderful surprises and interesting responses to some of my questions. You will not be disappointed.

    • #26: How to Give a Memorable and Impactful Presentation: Nerves & More

Being nervous is normal, overcoming it is strategic.

This is a quick- win short podcast that addresses what you should do well before your presentation, and what you need to do just before and during your talk.

More often than not, we get nervous because we haven’t PREPARED PROPERLY. There are vital things that will prevent pitfalls when you do your talk, and this podcast will cover those key points; key points that all master presenters use.

Most importantly, this podcast will also share secrets on how to keep your audience engaged and interested throughout your talk. Nobody likes to see their audience drift to sleep, that’s embarrassing. Once you hear and see them used, you’ll use them too.

Everyone can be a great speaker. Learning to speak and present is a skill that most of us never learn.

This episode is the last of the series of :

How to Give a Memorable and Impactful Presentation, and this one is worth listening too because it’s a recap of the other three podcasts before it. Still, those certainly are worth diving into to finesse your presentations.

Take a listen, it will help calm your nerves, and you’ll learn at least one new tidbit to becoming a better communicator.

Also, you can see the video at https://www.theintroverteddoctor.com/

Inevitably, especially if you’re in the medical field, you will have to give a formal presentation to an audience.

We all want to do an admirable job and want our message to be heard, felt and remembered. At the end of the presentation, we at least do not want to look incompetent and at our best, have made a difference whereby the audience is moved to action.

Some people do a great job, and some don’t, but the reality is that giving a presentation that will have an impact is a learnable skill. The mistakes can easily be mitigated because great presenters know the key strategies to deliver their message. Great presenters are made and NOT born.

This podcast originated as a result of people asking me, “what is my approach to giving a talk that will be remembered?” My experience as an Illusionist/performer has given me an edge in addressing this question, and I’ve shared those tips throughout the years. I’m glad they’ve found the tips valuable, and recently I’ve had to explain these tips again at several conferences that I’ve recently spoken at.

It doesn’t take much time at all, and the result is impactful.

    • #25: How to Give a Memorable and Impactful Presentation: The Delivery

How to deliver a message is the key to making a presentation memorable.

This is a quick- win short podcast that addresses the delivery of a presentation. Have you ever seen the title of a presentation and thought “this should be good talk” only to be disappointed?  I know I have. It’s not that the content wasn’t good, and generally has nothing to do with you as the listener. Mostly it’s the way the message was delivered.

No matter how interesting a topic is, if it isn’t delivered correctly you will lose the audience. This is a problembecause the audience will think that you weren’t prepared enough or they feel they aren’t smart enough to follow what you were saying. Neither are desirable outcomes.

The impact comes from the different elements of the delivery. This episode uncovers key elements that you should be mindful of and how to use them in your presentation. How to use your voice, humor and the correct way to use a power point presentation and so on.

Take a listen, it will either be a review or you’ll learn something new.

The better you know your audience, the better you know how to deliver, roll with the flow and connect with them… better.

This particular episode is a quick- win short podcast that addresses the critical question- who is the audience that I’m speaking to? Sometimes we don’t give this question enough attention because we think we know who they are or that it doesn’t make a significant difference. That’s a dangerous assumption to make because you aren’t in tune with what they need. Also, you should never ass-u-me because it can have a negative outcome.

The best speakers have the audience feeling “yeah s/he knew what I needed to hear.” This episode goes into detail about how to do a proper needs assessment and the interface that occurs between a speaker and the audience.

How often do you do a formal needs assessment before you give a presentation?

It doesn’t take much time at all, and the result is impactful.

    • #22: How to Improve Your Memory, Influence & Communications via Storytelling

The greatest communicators are storytellers and the greatest storytellers are the greatest communicators.

Effective storytelling creates meaningful conversations and communications. Stories explain, expound, explore, entertain, educate and connect us to people. The best communicators, whether it’s a one on one situation, or a large audience, use effective storytelling to connect with their audience.

Good stories make concepts, ideas and messages stick with people. Good stories help empower them to do more and create lasting impact.

Storytelling is not only useful in creating effective meaning in our communications, but it’s also useful for remembering things. I’ll share with you how to use a simple, yet effective, technique to improve your memory. It will decrease your study time and improve retention long term. Let's face it some stuff you simply have to remember it, but if you can cut recall it quicker and for longer, it will have a profound impact on everything you do career wise and personally.

In this podcast I use some compelling stories that two doctors have shared. The first is how a letter from a patient created significant personal anxiety and stress for the physician, and the second story is an impactful message that all clinicians should remember. Their stories really hit home their message with the audience. If you want to connect with people more and be more interesting, become a better storyteller.

This podcast is really useful as most people forget how to leverage this exceptionally important tool in all areas of their life. We all have stories that shape us and controls our actions. We also can change our stories and others by the way we share them.

Are you the best storyteller that you can be?
