Inspiration is an important aspect of training, as is discipline and repetition of fundamentals etc.
Our host shares some of his personal sources of inspiration in the form of different Sensei and individuals who have positively impacted his journey thus far.
Today he presents two very different Sensei, both of whom never crossed paths but still inspire a deep connection to Martial Arts as both a creative and progressive practice, whilst staying firmly rooted in the tradition and custom of their chosen styles.
Sal Belahi Sensei, a practitioner who's personal approach embodies the idea of embracing modern scientific training practises and modes of moving from the core, embracing mobility and utility as goals with a healthy sense of experimentation and "play" to strengthen his approach to Karate & Kobudo.

Teruo Chinen Sensei, Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Master, learning from the source and spreading the style across the globe whilst creating his very distinctive interpretation of Goju Ryu over the many decades until his passing in 2015. His almost mathematical precision and ability was added to by his creative approach to his own training and teaching, and in turn set a bar of quality for the rest to live up to.

Alpha Dogs, Unstoppable mindsets, and being the deadliest man in the room! Stoic Viking Warriors and ancient Japanese sword saints combined with the noble savage, the loner, holding the upper hand in every situation.
We talk about why "leading with your chest" being the loudest voice in the room with the most to prove can sometimes ensure no one listens. Not all Sensei come from within the Dojo, some are quiet unassuming Men & Women who's loudest voice is what the do, not what they say.

Zatoichi formed a large part of our host's viewing experience in his formative years, a swashbuckling sword wielding free for all but with heart and pathos as well! What do we learn from these types of media, and why do they form a sometimes pivotal role in keeping us in the Dojo?

What if the treasures we find on the fabled islands of Ryukyu have more value to the world when we use them everywhere else?
The positivity and unity that exists between differing
Karate/Kobudoka/styles and cultures whilst being on the Island, is something that seems to dissolve as soon as we get on the plane.
How do we foster and keep a little bit of Okinawa in our own Dojo back home.

Returning from Okinawa, the realisation that maybe legacy isn't what I thought it was, and invincibility is an illusion that stops evolution and offers no peace.

As we mature the focus of our technique shifts through a number of phases, beginning with the “do I look cool doing this ?” stage and progressing to “will this work in an actual self defence situation?” and landing somewhere
in the “can I make this work” and finally “how do i make this work and not cripple myself trying to in process” stage.
What was once about being big and demonstrative gives way to what one hopes will be almost invisible.

“If I knew then, what I know now.”
It’s a common thought, musing on what we would do if we had the chance, the means, the opportunity to go back in time and shape our experience.
So our host shares his thoughts on how he might shape his journey in the Martial Arts, what would he add to the mix? What would he subtract? And what would he leave as is?
To see the diagram he is referring to, check out the YouTube version with full accompanying audio.
