Today Jan is joined by Amy B. Chesler, author, podcaster, speaker, survivor, and victim advocate from Los Angeles, California. Her training in the arts and public speaking began in childhood, but it wasn’t until losing her mother to domestic violence in 2007 that she found her true calling: trauma-informing the public, and inspiring legal and social change. Her advocacy-related work has been seen on IDtv’s Evil Lives Here and in Chicken Soup for the Soul (several times over), The New York Post, Scary Mommy, Something Was Wrong podcast, and many more major platforms. Amy was even gifted the BlogHer honor of Voice of the Year in 2017, and became M.C. of the popular Moms Meet conference in 2018 & 2019. In April of 2021 she celebrated the release of her true crime memoir, Working for Justice, and in 2023 she launched the chart-topping true crime/self-help podcast, What Came Next with Tiffany Reese of Something Was Wrong. Utilizing her experience in the education and the criminal justice systems, as well as her degree in Psychology, Amy often speaks about parenthood, grief, domestic violence, the nature of abuse, trauma healing, and ethics in the genre of true crime.  Amy is here to tell her harrowing story of growing up with a violent sibling who eventually snapped. Through her trauma and grief she became an advocate for others who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and familial violence.

Today Jan explores stage 4 of the 6 stages of grooming which is 'Isolating the child'. This can take many forms, but one of the ways that seems to be consistent is using secrets as a way of putting a wedge between the child and what support system they have. Another way in which this stage is carried out and can actually be seen as a parent is the manipulator taking on duties/tasks that you would generally perform, so remember to ask yourself "Would I do this for another person?". All that and more in today's episode.

In today's episode Jan is joined by Brenda Sandquist who is the founder and executive director for Xquisite, a nonprofit, established in 2012, specifically designed to walk alongside victims of human trafficking, sexual assault, and intimate terrorism (domestic violence) to bring them from a place of exploitation, not only surviving but to thrive in their next steps for a life free from what has held them captive.  She is passionate about leading a movement of strong women who have become empowered to have their voices heard and to shatter secrets they have had to live under, exposing their truth to become Diamond Strong.  Brenda has worked to empower women over 30 years helping them to realize that no matter what life has presented them, their value remains strong.  Brenda has expanded Xquisite’s reach to establish the Diamond Strong Freedom Center, a center dedicated to bring freedom and empowerment for sexually exploited women and survivors of human trafficking, sexual assault and intimate terrorism to live healthy, flourishing lives.  The Diamond Strong Freedom Center and it’s Drop-In Center is ready to serve with a variety of services that are free, confidential, nonjudgmental with no strings attached, which will bring hope, courage and a voice for survivors.  It is Brenda’s passion to champion the women and children served at Xquisite, to realize their dreams can be their reality.

Today Jan is joined by Deb Shapiro who has, for over fifteen years, developed the talents and businesses of some of the top credentialed speakers in the industry including Hall of Fame inductees and Certified Speaking Professionals. In 2017, Deb created DEBx, a 90-Day Speaker Development Experience, designed to show emerging speakers how to use their voice as a powerful instrument of change. Through onstage appearances and professional recordings, DEBx has touched tens of thousands… and counting. In 2020, using the tools from DEBx, Deb founded the nonprofit, Amplify Voices, an advocacy incubator whose mission is to discover, develop, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities to empower positive change. Through multiple stage events, speaker circles and a compelling documentary, The Journey, Amplify has given voice to a variety of communities including women impacted by sex trafficking and sexual assault, those formerly incarcerated, and women touched by breast cancer. Prior to the speaking industry, Deb served 15 years in Corporate HR and Training & Development.
