I used to think having a panic attack would never happen to me until it did. Would you like to hear the story of the worst one I had and what I learned from it? You might enjoy seeing how I work to prevent panic attacks from being necessary in my life. What causes a the spasms, fit of terror, and disorder that comes with a panic attack? For me, selfishness, fear, and an obsession with the future made me a perfect victim for episodes of anxiety. The opposites of these are service to others, faith, and focusing on what is happening now. Reading self-help books, going to recovery meetings, learning from healthy people around me, counseling, and prayer continue to help me live a life one day at a time where getting into misery is the exception rather than the norm. Today instead of trying to figure out how to stop a panic attack in progress, my work is to see that my panic attacks happened because I needed to learn a lesson from them. A change in behavior based on looking at my values today which are health, sobriety, unconditional love, wisdom, gratitude, creativity, play, and service gives me the opportunity to enjoy each moment without the need to circle the drain whenever a challenge comes up. My exercise for today is to continue watching for early signs of a panic attack including self-pity, anger, frustration, helplessness, resentment, fear, frustration, inconsideration, and jealously because as soon as I spot these, I know it is time to start praying and ask for help to avoid the need to indulge in another outburst! Thank you for listening day 89 of Happier People podcast and I hope it is helpful for you!
