The Juliana Theory’s biggest album, Emotion Is Dead, one of the most legendary in the Tooth & Nail catalog, just reached its 20 year anniversary. This episode explores the conditions in which the band and particularly the frontman Brett Detar emerged.   The western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia scene, from which Zao and The Juliana Theory are from is another hot spot that emerged and connected to the wider scene in the late 90’s in part by connecting to the Arkansas scene with Barry Poynter through Bruce from Living Sacrifice.   Bret was the guitarist in Zao, and lead singer for The Juliana Theory. Both wildly successful 90’s groups and often listed among the favorites of bands of the subsequent generation, many of whom were known for fusing hardcore with sad emo elements and learning how to tie it together in a way that could reach an even wider audiences with some pop appeal. The influence is hard to overstate.
