In this episode, I’m sharing how to achieve quality of life as an entrepreneur. Now, I'm smiling because quality of life, I think, is one of those things that we all strive to accomplish. We strive to achieve. We want to be in balance with our family and business.
When I started my own company in 2012, and one of the reasons why my husband and I are so passionate about running our business, and one of the reasons why we are in this for the long haul, is quality of life.
We make sure that we take the time to plan out our vacations and there's certain things that are non-negotiable when it comes to our family and our kids. I know this is probably not rocket science, but if it's not on my calendar, it usually doesn't happen. So getting things scheduled makes a really, really big difference.
The next thing is what are your priorities? I know for a very long time, I mean basically since I had kids, I would say my kids are first. But then what would happen is something would come up. I'd have a really important call from a client or an amazing speaking opportunity, and all of a sudden my kids were important, but they kind of got pushed to the side because of this great opportunity. I've really begun to realize is that when you say that something is your most important thing, you have to ask yourself, do your actions speak louder than your words?
At the end of the day, are you going to wish that you spent more time at the office? Am I going to wish I spent more time on stage? No. So having those priorities in place is really important.

In today’s episode, I'm sharing how I manage my own social media. I do run a social media company, so it's probably not surprising that I run my own social media. But I'm often asked "who helps manage it? how do I run it?" So I'd like to share my thoughts around it and a few tools that I use to help manage it all.
One of the first things I'll say, and I said this a few episodes ago, is I really believe in the philosophy of "no tweet left behind." What I really mean by that is this - if someone likes or comments, or interacts with me on social media, I'm going to respond to them. It's something that's very important to me and it's one of the ways I've been able to build my business, build our community, and it's something I'm very proud of now.
So if that's the case, how do I manage that? There's a few things that I do. First off, when I open up my Facebook feed or Instagram feed every morning, I don't look through my news feed first. I actually look at my notifications first, and I don't look at my notifications unless I'm ready to respond to them. I usually do it that at least twice a day, once in the morning, and once in the evening. But I always make sure that I'm in a place where I can actually respond.
Another tip I'll give you that I do on a daily basis is Focus Five. Focus Five is simply a process where once I look at my notifications, when I'm ready to go into my newsfeed, I find five people that I can meaningfully connect with. I do this literally every morning as I'm drinking my cup of coffee. I'll scroll through my notifications, meaningfully respond, do my focus five and then I go about my day.

In today's episode I'm going to share with you some of the backstory of how I got into speaking and give you some tips for how you can get into speaking if you are interested in becoming a professional speaker. As I look through my career, I was really fortunate because I was given a lot of opportunities early on in my career to be in front of a lot of people. Today, a big part of my business is speaking and I've been fortunate to speak on stages, literally all over the world stages large and small. Here are a few tips for honing your craft as a professional speaker: Tip One: Always try to put yourself in a position where you are in front of people. Raise your hand and volunteer for opportunities - look for opportunities local to you. Tip Two: Think about what your message is about. Do you want to teach? Is it something inspirational? Is it something educational? Is it something funny? Is it a life lesson? Is it a skill? What is that people ask you all the time? What are things that you're the most passionate about? Tip Three: Start to put some of that content out there in the form of video content. If you want to become a subject matter expert on a certain topic or whatever it is that you want to talk about, start thinking about what type of video content can you start to create on a consistent basis. Speaking is something that I truly love and enjoy. At the risk of sounding corny, I truly feel at home on a stage. So if speaking is something you're curious about and you'd like me to talk more about that, I'm happy to share more about that. Just let me know!

Back in 2012, we opened up our doors for business and I thought on this year's anniversary, I would create a podcast sharing seven lessons learned over the past seven years!
1. Work hard, play hard
2. Surround yourself with great people
3. Make your yeses, YESES! and your noes, NOES!
4. Money is not everything
5. Love, do what you love
6. Have systems in place
7. It is not what you earn, it is what you keep
If you're listening to this live, I just want to take a moment and really thank everyone who's been a supporter of myself and Paul, and our company and our team. It truly is a village in so many ways and I think so often we look at people who are doing things and we think, "wow, that's really great. Look at what they're doing." But there are so many moving parts to what we do, especially with our company. So I just want to give a big thank you to our team. We have some amazing folks on our team! I want to give a big thank you to all of our clients and everyone inside of our #GetSocialSmart Academy and just really all of you who are listening in - you're a part of our community!
I'm so grateful for our community – thank you! Cheers!

As a professional speaker, I have been speaking for years and I speak to all different size audiences from a few hundred to a few thousand. And although oftentimes I'm giving similar presentations, every presentation is different because every audience is different, every group is different, and it's something I take a lot of pride in.
I would say over the past few years, I've really been focused on honing my craft and really honing how I think about presentations - honing my stage presence and really thinking about the whole process. In fact, last year I was so fortunate to attend a great event through Heroic Public Speaking. This has been a great resource for me to really improve my presentation skills.

To this day, if you tag me, if you comment, if you message me, DM me, tweet me, Instagram story me, whatever it might be - I'm going to respond. Many people have asked, “How do you do this, Katie? That seems so un-scalable - you must be on social media 24/7."
The reality is that I'm certainly not! Now ironically, I am in the business of social media, but I am certainly not on social media 24/7. In fact, I'm probably on the phone a whole lot more than I am on Facebook or Instagram. But what I have found that's really valuable, is to just be really intentional with the time I'm on social media. If I hop on for five or 10 minutes in the morning as I'm drinking my cup of coffee, I don't necessarily go right to my newsfeed, I go right to my notifications. I check my notifications first, and that's been my process for years and years.
Respond to people, engage. I would also take this a step further and say this applies to all areas of your business. If someone emails you, email them back. If someone texts, text them back. If someone calls, call them back. Be a person of integrity, be that person and you'll be amazed. People will be amazed when you are that person because in this day and age, most people don't do that. Most people don't return the call. Most people don't comment back when they've been tagged in a Facebook post. Be that person who shows up, who engages, who understands that with social media, that first part is social.
I'd love to hear from you. What do you think about this? Do you think it's unreasonable to respond to every comment notification? Is this something you do? Is it something you've thought of doing? I would just love to hear your opinion about this, so reach out to me. Facebook or Instagram are the best ways to find me. And as always, if you enjoyed this podcast, the best thing you can do is share it out, tell a friend, subscribe, leave us a review!

In this podcast episode, I talk about the value of being true to yourself when it comes to how you put yourself out there personally and professionally. Oftentimes we fall into the trap of trying to be a people pleaser or we try to be all things to all people. But the truth is, for most of us, when we are looking to hire a professional, we are looking for professionalism, expertise, a great referral – but we also want to find someone that ‘gets us.’
We work with a lot of agents and brokers inside our #GetSocialSmart Academy helping them with their social media strategy and some of the factors to consider when you are putting your content plan together are things like:
When you start to put out content that isn’t just information – but content that has an opinion and a voice, your voice – you will attract the people you want to work with. Not only that, but working through these questions will help form your mission personally and in your business, which ultimately makes the ‘yeses’ bigger yeses in our life and makes it easier to say ‘no’ when needed.
