  • Patient Maria: Botox is Better For Your Mental Health Than Therapy
While looking at photos of herself about five years ago, Maria noticed that an “11” had appeared between her brows. Those pesky parallel lines were so deep that they didn’t tan with the rest of her face. That was the moment she decided to do something.

Maria works as a labor & delivery nurse across the street at Scripps hospital, a friend who already had “beautiful Botox” told her where to go. So she first came to LJC to get rid of those 11’s with Botox, then for help reversing sun damage from years of long distance running without sunscreen in her twenties, and most recently for non-surgical lifting and tightening.

Her relationships at LJC are so important to her now that she says she’d “eat cat food if it meant that I could still come here and get all my treatments done.” She swears that the providers at LJC have done more for improving her self esteem than a therapist could.

  • Plastic Surgeon Explains The Fastest Way to Look Less Tired
Many people come to LJC seeking to look less tired, old, or sad – because they are not actually tired, old, or sad! Fillers can only be used for so long before surgery is the only option. LJC facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kiersten Riedler talks about the blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery and how it solves the very common problem of constantly looking tired.

As you get older, it’s common for eyebrows and upper eyelids to fall. Your skin loses elasticity over time, resulting in fat to bulge and create that puffy look in the lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is a quick, simple surgery to get rid of excess skin on the eyelids. Within a few weeks, your eyes will appear bright and open, and have the effect of your entire face looking more refreshed.

If you think the treatments available at a medical spa aren’t for you because you’re not old enough, think again. Autumn’s story will change how you think about those barely visible fine lines between your brows, around your eyes, and around your mouth. Find out which treatments have been her secret weapon since she started coming to LJC in her late twenties.

From Botox to microneedling to laser skin resurfacing, Autumn shares how each of these treatments delivered a subtle, natural result to keep her looking like she hasn’t aged a day.

  • Swollen, Bloated, and Puffy with Kathleen Lisson
Lymphatic massage expert Kathleen Lisson explains the important role of your ~800 lymph nodes in post-op recovery. If the lymphatic system is disrupted or overwhelmed, which can occur with plastic surgery, lymphatic massage, or manual lymphatic drainage is often recommended to help with healing and recovery.

The lymphatic system is how your body processes and eliminates waste. Your immune system is part of the lymphatic system, so when a bacteria or virus enters your body, the lymphatic system produces immune cells to fight it.

Manual lymphatic drainage isn’t so much a massage as it is a gentle skin stretching movement that opens up the initial lymphatic capillary and encourages the interstitial fluid to enter into the lymphatic system where waste products, fluids, and bacterias are transported away and eliminated naturally.

Don’t miss Kathleen’s essential advice for anyone having plastic surgery. If you’re not in San Diego, you’ll want to hear her suggestions for getting your treatment covered by insurance and finding a qualified lymphatic massage therapist in your area.

Meet Kathleen Lisson, lymphedema therapist, board certified massage therapist, and author.

  • Revision Breast Augmentation with the Internal Bra Technique: Plastic Surgeon Explains
If you’re disappointed that your breast implants are sagging or haven’t lasted as long as expected, the “internal bra” is a superb breast implant revision technique that uses GalaFLEX, a bioabsorbable mesh-like material to add support. Breast implants aren’t meant to last forever and at some point, our breasts sag.

It happens to all of us, and we inevitably won’t have our 20-year-old breasts in our 50s. If you’ve had implants for a while, the internal bra can be included in revision surgery to support those stretched tissues back up to where they once were. Plastic surgeon Dr. John Smoot joins us to explain what the internal bra is and how it works to create a scaffolding of thicker tissue to add strength.

  • Patient Taylor: Surprisingly Smaller Than Expected
Taylor’s least favorite body part has always been her arms. Working in the medical spa at La Jolla Cosmetic, Taylor knew there were a lot of ways to approach body contouring, including those arms. She had already lost 30 lbs, and plastic surgeon Dr. Swistun motivated her to lose 15 more to ensure successful results by showing her what she might look like using special imaging software called Vectra 3D.

After reaching her goal weight, Taylor moved ahead with surgery. Dr. Swistun sculpted her body with 360 lipo to her upper and lower back, full abdomen up to her bra line, arms, and thighs, followed by Renuvion to tighten everything up. Although she read about it in her pre-op booklet, Taylor was surprised to actually be that person who cries upon waking up from surgery.

But the biggest surprise for Taylor, even while still early in recovery, is how much smaller she is than she expected to be. She shares her “roller coaster of emotions” as her body changed through the stages of recovery, from waking up in the recovery room through the first weeks with her new body.

  • Patient Kathleen: How I Got Life Flighted To My Nose Job
For our patient Kathleen Lisson, an accident while hiking in the desert led to a broken nose, which led her straight to Dr. Brahme for a rhinoplasty… and while he was at it, a face lift, brow lift, neck lift, chin implant, fat transfer to her cheeks, and a septoplasty to fix her deviated septum. Not everyone seeks cosmetic surgery for aesthetic reasons; sometimes it’s necessary following an accident or injury.

For Kathleen, a freak accident while hiking in the desert was the catalyst that caused her to move forward with everything she’d been dreaming about. As a lymphedema therapist, Kathleen had seen the results of Dr. Brahme’s work while helping other plastic surgery patients who had seen him for facial rejuvenation. She always knew that if she decided to get any type of cosmetic surgery, he’d be the one she would trust to do it.

In this episode, Kathleen tells the crazy story of how she broke her nose and ended up getting her dream face at LJC. From her perspective as a patient and a trusted professional caring for other plastic surgery patients, you won’t want to miss her expert advice for a smooth recovery.

  • Plastic Surgeon Breaks Down the Breast Implant Black Box Warning
This year, the primary concern of women researching breast implants became safety instead of cost. LJC’s own Dr. Hector Salazar-Reyes joins us to share his thoughts on breast implant safety and walk us through the FDA’s updated labeling requirements, known as the “black box warning.”

With his unique perspective as a champion of patient safety, Dr. Salazar shares the real history of how patients, doctors, and industry teamed up to drive these important changes in patient education. If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, you won’t want to miss this important conversation about what the “black box” warning includes, where you can read it, and what each of the guidelines means.

Read the “black box warning” for yourself here (heads up – there’s no black box, it’s just an ordinary box)

  • Corey Does Ultherapy
Corey Dylan from San Diego’s KFBG BIG FM 100.7, tells her story about doing Ultherapy for her face and neck. At 51, she felt like her cheeks were looking jowly and knew there was no way to reverse that with skin care products.

As a radio and tv professional, Corey chose Ultherapy because she knew it would allow her to be in and out of the office within a couple hours without anybody noticing she had anything done. Hear how she’s feeling and what changes she’s already noticing one week after her Ultherapy treatment.

  • Ultherapy: The Non-Surgical Facelift
If you aren’t quite ready for a facelift, Ultherapy is a great way to delay surgery by lifting and tightening your face and neck. In the first of a two part series about Ultherapy non surgical skin tightening, Anh Bridgewater gives us the full rundown of what Ultherapy is, what it does, how long it takes to see results, and who is a good candidate.

How does Ultherapy work? Microfocused ultrasound is delivered to the tissue layers to stimulate collagen regeneration. Results appear slowly over time, as your body works to stimulate the collagen and tighten up the skin.

Don’t miss part 2 with BIG FM 100.7 radio personality Corey Dylan, who just had Ultherapy at LJC and shares her experience.
