  • Regime Change Hypocrisy
On FPF #389, I talk about how calls to regime change other nations ignore the human rights abuses of the US empire. The US has waged several wars of aggression since the start of the century, leaving millions dead. The US ran a massive torture and drone program where the victims are often innocent and never receive justice. The US has the highest prison population, and whistle-blowers face more severe consequences than the criminals they expose. Police in the US gets to commit crimes with impunity. I argue Americans should focus on changing their own regime, rather than waging war against others.

  • Peace in Colombia and Afghanistan?
On FPF #388, I talk about the peace process in Colombia and Afghanistan. In Colomba, the new president Ivan Duque has opposed the peace agreement with the FARC. Now he plans to end funding for a program key to keeping the peace in Colombia. If the program end, the FARC could start to remilitarize.

Official statements from both sides of the talks to end the Afghan War indicate the US and the Taliban are moving towards an agreement. However, there is a reason for disappointment as the 8th round of negotiations did not end in a signed agreement as some expected. I break down some possible obstacles to peace.

  • 8/12/19 Nasser Arrabyee on Saudi War Crimes in Yemen
Nasser Arrabyee discusses the latest Saudi war crime against Yemeni civilians, the bombing of a family on the first day of Eid al-Adha. He also gives a summary of the last few months of the horrific war there, replete with complex political nuances that will not be resolved by a simple and total military victory. The war goes on only because the United States government continues to lend material support to the Saudis and will not openly condemn the conflict.

  • 8/12/19 Jason Ditz with the Latest on Afghanistan
Jason Ditz discusses a recent Taliban suicide attack in Kabul and a report finding that about 40,000 soldiers on the books of the Afghan army don't really exist. These so-called "ghost soldiers" often abandon their posts, but army officials don't report it, since it's in their interest to appear to have as many soldiers as possible. Ditz sees this report as a good sign that the government is trying to clean house before a peace deal with the Taliban. He and Scott lament the fact that so few Americans actually understand which sides America supports in which wars—if they did, they would know that their tax money goes to fund Al-Qaeda fighters in Syria.

  • 8/9/19 Pete Quinones on Gun Control, Health Care, and the War on Drugs
Pete Quinones, formerly Mance Rayder, discusses some of his recent articles for the Libertarian Institute, covering gun control, Trump's election in 2016, and Bernie Sanders' proposed health care laws. After the shootings last week in El Paso and Dayton, many Americans have been calling for stricter gun control laws. Quinones reminds us that anything approaching the full confiscation of guns across the entire country that would be required to actually stop those who are desperate to get a gun from getting one would probably result in open violence between civilians and the police tasked with carrying out the program. He believes this could be the final straw that causes states to secede from the union, and so in one sense, it might not be such a bad thing if these policies caught on. They also discuss the drug war and America's growing police state.

  • Another Saudi Failure in Yemen
On FPF #387, I discuss Saudi losing the second capital of Yemen to southern separatists. The southern separatists were long allies of the Saudis in the war against the Houthi. However, the separatists recently went to war against the Saudi-backed government in Yemen and seized the city of Aden. Losing a capital city of Yemen for the second time is the latest in a long string of failures for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. Saudi - with essential US backing - continues to wage the failing war in Yemen, and the people of Yemen are suffering under the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

  • 8/9/19 Eric Margolis on the Dangers of Nuclear War Between India and Pakistan
Scott interviews Eric Margolis about the recent legal change that will now allow non-Kashmiris to buy land in Kashmir. Kashmir is majority Muslim, and has been the subject of territorial disputes between India and Pakistan for years. The fear is that the legal change will allow the Indian government to slowly annex pieces of Kashmir away from (at least nominally) independent control by sending settlers there. Scott stresses the added danger that since both sides of the conflict have nuclear weapons, all it takes is one use of a tactical nuke by a general on one side to open up an entire war based on the use of nuclear weapons. Needless to say this would be a catastrophe.
