  • 8/9/19 Hunter DeRensis on the Dangerous Foreign Policy of ‘National Conservatism’
Scott interviews Hunter DeRensis about the National Conservatism Conference, part of a movement that DeRensis describes as trying to come up with intellectual rationalizations for Trumpism after the fact. Crucially, this new national conservatism movement did not exist to support Trump as a candidate, nor did it foresee or advocate something like Trump's policies. It has instead emerged as a means to make them seem wise and acceptable by coming up with justifications that may or may not be those that Trump and his populist allies actually intended. More pressingly, the foreign policy of many of those in the movement is backward and dangerous.

  • 8/8/19 Ben Freeman on the Military-Industrial Jobs Scam
Ben Freeman talks about President Trump's friendship with Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson and what it means for the military-industrial complex. Trump likes to boast about keeping businesses—particularly those related to military industries—open and hiring in the United States, but Freeman explains the reality that these companies do not create any net jobs at all. Scott references David Stockman's "Great Deformation", a concept describing the unseen effects on the economy when politicians interfere. For example, rust belt voters see the concentrated effect of a factory in their town staying open instead of going overseas, but nobody notices the marginally increased prices all over the state or the country because an inefficiency was allowed to persist. The same is true broadly of our taxes, which take away a little bit from everything and show up in big projects that people view as beneficial without considering the cost.

    Discussed on the show:

"The Military-Industrial Jobs Scam" (Antiwar.com Original)
The Great Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America
"Once More, with Feeling: Our System Is Not Socialism, but Participatory Fascism | Robert Higgs" (Independent Institute)
"US: Lockheed Stock and Two Smoking Barrels | The Scott Horton Show" (scotthorton.org)

  • DNC Candidates Plan to Bring Empire Home guest Joanne Leon
Joanne Leon returns to the show to talk about the race for the Democratic Party nomination. Joanne breaks down the horrific plan offered by Mayor Pete in response to mass shootings. She explains his plan is likely to lead to the oppression of more Americans.

Kyle and Joanne update the Tulsi Gabbard campaign. While Tulsi remains the favored candidate for most people in the antiwar movement, Rep Gabbard recently voted in favor of an anti-BDS bill. Joanne gives her take on why Tulsi casts the vote and how the vote was rejected by the candidates base.

Joanne also discusses the highlight of the second debate, Tulsi smashing Kamala Harris' disturbing record as an Attorney General. In response, Harris attacked Tulsi support of Assad. Joanne and Kyle take down the myth that talking for foreign leaders is an immoral policy.

Joanne Leon is the host of the Around the Empire podcast.

  • Bolton’s Economic War on Venezuela
On FPF #385, I cover the US economic war against Venezuela. The US imposed sanctions on Venezuela under Obama. After John Bolton joined the Trump administration as National Security Adviser, the US ramped up the economic war against Venezuela by sanctioning the state oil company, and by supporting Juan Guaido's coup attempt. Trump slapped new sanction on Venezuela this week. Bolton says the sanctions can be used to punish anyone who trades with the Maduro regime. I discuss possible consequences of the reckless foreign policy and how Trump has used sanctions against other countries.

  • Tulsi, Kashmir, and Iran
On FPF #384 I cover Tulsi Gabbard's positions on BDS, India's crackdown in Kashmir, and Iran possibly seizing an Iranian ship in the Gulf. Last week, Tulsi voted for a bill that condemned BDS. She received some criticism from her base and has now become a cosponsor of Ilhan Omar's bill affirming Americans' rights to boycott a foreign government.

India has started to take more control over Kashmir. The Indian government took legal steps to take some of Kashmir's autonomy. India has also cut phone and internet services in Kashmir. I explain how this can lead to a dangerous escalation with nuclear powers India and Pakistan.

In the Middle East, Iran is claiming to have seized an Iranian oil tanker. Iran alleges the tanker was involved in smuggling. In Yemen, AQAP is carrying out attacks against the Saudi/US-backed government's forces.

  • The El Paso Tragedy (And What We Can Learn From It)
*warning - I do name the shooter and read / discuss the manifesto*

After the mass shooting in El Paso I think its a good idea to have a discussion about motive, ideology, how everyone focuses on the wrong thing, and on how we need to look at ugly things to understand them
