  • Episode 141 - Why We Still Need Local News with Steve Kiggins
This week, we have a really cool guest. We welcome Steve Kiggins ,editor of the Twin Falls, ID local newspaper, the Times News. Steve has worked in journalism for nearly 30 years, both on local and regional levels, and national syndications like US Today. His broad experience brings a unique perspective that might surprise you in this very divided day and age. Steve's mission is to ensure that local people, local news, and local matters don't get lost in the big noise of larger news organizations. His dedication to community, to telling the stories straight, and making sure the people who matter (local communities!) are getting the information they need, when they need it. In addition, he shares that it's incredibly important to avoid both reader and journalist burnout, and talks about ways that can happen (hint: it includes popcorn). We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did - it gave us a broader perspective of the information we consume , and how we need to be conscientious of how it affects both our own experiences and those of the people around us. • Episode 140 - Katharine Goes to Scotland
In the first week of December (2022) Katharine got on a 9 hour flight to Glasgow, Scotland. The reason? The company she works for is based there, and she was going over to see how the business runs from the home office, meet new and prospective customers (as well as colleagues she's only ever met over a computer screen), and get a glimpse into Scottish agriculture and hospitality. Valene interviews Katharine about her experiences, what it was like to meet other agriculturists on their own soil, and what is the same and different about ag here in the US and ag across the pond. Along the way, they get off on rabbit trails regarding policy about food and agriculture, but don't worry, the rabbit trails are relevant to both the episode and the Millennial Ag podcast - we came up with some good content for future episodes, and know you'll enjoy this lighter hearted one as well. Tune in to learn what we can learn from our friends across the pond, hear just how green the countryside is there, and a couple of key whisky (note the lack of "e"....that's proper Scottish!) recommendations with more promised as Katharine hopefully returns soon. Slainte!

  • Episode 139 - MA's 2023 Goal Forecasts and Plans
Welcome to 2023 listeners! This week (as always) we bring you what we want this year to look like for ourselves. Instead of our usual quick rundown though, we’re a lot more thoughtful about how we approach this episode. We begin with how and why we set goals, and how we’ve been giving our years specific words that we want to center our efforts on. Next we do dive into our goals. Something different for both of us this year is that our goals are still developing. We’ve given ourselves grace to be really thoughtful and intentional about what we want them to be and how we want to go about achieving them. We do share what we have in mind, along with our thoughts about how to well, go about them. Our conversation ranges quite a bit further afield than we anticipated when we planned this episode, but it helped clarify our way forward, and we hope it gives you food for thought and maybe some tips too. We wish you the very best for 2023, and are so looking forward to hearing your goals and how you plan to achieve them!! Love, Val and Katharine

  • Episode 138 - 2023 Sneak Peek and Merry Christmas!
This week is a quick one…..well we thought it would be, but ya put a quarter in us and we went for 1/2 an hour. Anyway, we talk about the topics we’re planning for in 2023, colored with our take and how we want to approach super interesting, relevant, and deep topics headed into the new year. And as always, we talk about our Christmas traditions old and new, and what we’re looking forward to most as Christmas barrels towards us. Best wishes to you and yours, and Merry Christmas from Millennial Ag!

  • Episode 137 - Like a bad rash, Wayne Pacelle is Back
This week, we welcome Ethan Lane, Vice President of Government Affairs at National Cattlemen's Beef Association, based in Washington DC. He alerts us to something really unfortunate for the agriculture industry - Wayne Pacelle, animal activist extraordinaire (and we don't mean that as a compliment) has returned to the spotlight after getting whacked down by the #metoo movement. Pacelle has a new animal rights organization, cloaked as always in deceit and deception. The disturbing thing about this conversation is the light that Ethan sheds on these kinds of organizations' ever-evolving (and unfortunately, innovative and effective) tactics to advance their agenda to end animal agriculture. Ethan is the perfect guide for this conversation, providing nuance and perspective colored by his years of experience in Washington DC, but also his cattle background. Tune into this very important - it's worth saying vital - conversation that is a wakeup call to all animal ag producers to pivot our own strategies to match the cunning and ingenious (we hate to say it, but looking at the face of it, it's true) ways that people like Wayne Pacelle are using to make sure food producers are out of a job. • Episode 136 - Kelly Maher on Parallels in Politics and Agriculture
This week’s episode is…..unclassifiable. In the best way possible. We welcome guest Kelly Maher, 9 News in Colorado Republican political analyst, urban farm aficionado, and all-around life wrangler. She wrote an article just after last month’s midterm elections and it hit us in the extremely relevant category, so we knew we had to have her on. While our goal was to talk about her views and perspectives on how the “Red Wave” was circumvented by personal attacks and a lot of talking about people instead of issues, our conversation stretched far and wide.To talk with Kelly is to immediately want to be her friend. She drew us right in with things we have in common (making cheese, politics, and an affinity for a LOT of coffee), and made us nod our heads in agreement with a lot of what she had to say. We touch on the midterms, how American politics have grown so vitriolic that voters are trying desperately to throw the wackos out of office, urban agriculture, conventional agriculture, campaign finance, fake meat, activists (in politics and ag) and more, more, more. This is one of the longer episodes we’ve recorded in a long time, and is worth every single minute. There’s no doubt we’ll have Kelly back on soon, and when you hear her sincerity and genuineness, you’ll agree with us wholeheartedly.Tune in! • Episode 134 - Why Are Thanksgiving Turkeys So Dang Expensive?! with guest Dr. David Frame
Dr. David Frame, DVM of the USU Extension Service, is a poultry specialist in Sanpete County, Utah. With Thanksgiving just one week away, we wanted to investigate why our turkey dinner seems to have spiked in price this year. Dr. Frame walks us through from the very beginning of this discovery….he starts out with the avian influenza strain that has hit US shores, the thinning of the US poultry flock that it has caused, lack of available and willing labor, and inflation. He then talks about the impacts to consumers (that’s you!) and how you might still manage to get a good deal on your bird this holiday season. Returning guest Tanner Beymer joins us to give our audience an overview of what he's seeing in the political world as we rapidly approach the U.S. midterm elections. He shares not only what agriculture lobbying groups try to accomplish on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, but also the races he is closely watching all over the country as the majorities in both chambers may be at risk (or not, depending on your own preference) of flipping. As always, Tanner is a dynamic and entertaining guest, melding his agriculture experience with his time in the lobbying and political realms.
