As is tradition around this time of year, we’ve put our “new music” aside for this week and went into the archives to pull out over an hour of festive music.
This month we’ve created a bonus mixtape that explores the grittier side of Christmas music. Over an hour of some of the best indie rock Christmas music. We’ve got Christmas music from the likes of Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainright, The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes, Julian Casablancas, Deer Tick, The Kinks, Best Coast, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and of course, The Pogues.
If you are in the Christmas spirit, please go support the Heart N Soul Christmas Fundraiser by visiting their JustGiving fundraising page to give what you can.
If this gritty indie rock sound is not what you are looking for during Christmas, you should check out some of our Christmas Mixtapes from previous years: The 80’s Christmas Mixtape, A Jazzy Big Band Christmas Mixtape, A LoFi Christmas, A Classical Christmas Mixtape or The Christmas Mixtape 2000!

The mixtape for August features new music from Crystal Fighters, Laura Misch, Devendra Banhart, Fever Ray, SAULT, Move 78, Daao, Freyja Garbett and Nu Genea. This mixtape is a real wormhole of audio. As I mentioned in the intro, check out some of the fantastic writing and photography that our very own Jarrett Edmund has been crushing this year with his coverage of Sled Island and the Blink 182 Tour. And of course, his feature on Nickleback called: “Look at these photographs: my day with Nickelback.”
Oh, and check out our new Jazz Underground resident artist this month, Bubble Wrap Trap. If you like their sound, go check out the ten new track on our Jazz Underground Spotify playlist. Follow the playlist to show your support!

May 2023 Mixtape Playlist
Thanks for tuning into the April edition of The New LoFi mixtape. I had a lot of fun exploring the tropical exotica side of jazz and funk last week. This week is a bit of a continuation on that idea by taking a dive into funk and psychedelica that has been released in the last year from the Arabic world. It’s all about the Turkish funk and soul this month. Turkish psychedelic funk from producers like Janko Nilovic, Charif Megarbane, DJ Istanbul or a band like Altin Gün.
There is some more traditional jazz and soul outfits on the mix including one from Chip Wickham’s new album called “Astral Traveling.” And we’ve also got a few indie tracks floating around like a new track from an all-girl LA-based trio called Automatic.
Check out the full playlist (and some video from a few of the artists) below. Links on how to support each artist in the playlist.
Sweet little video for the new Automatic single
Gweno’s new track, “Tresor”
Bonkers collage video for Black Flower’s new single, “O Fogo”
