  • CSI, The Container Community, and Kubernetes
On today's episode of The New Stack Makers, we're looking for answers to some commonly-asked questions in the Kubernetes community. Specifically, we set out to learn more about the focus on storage, along with a look inside the advancements to the Container Storage Interface.
Fielding these questions from TNS Founder Alex Williams were {code} Technical Director Clinton Kitson and Portworx Co-Founder & CTO Goutham Rao.
"It's lessons learned. When you lose your data, you have a really bad day. That's why storage is one of those critical areas we get right. I think we are at a very critical place with CSI," said Kitson.

  • VMs, Clouds, And Containers: Similarities, Differences, And Where They Are Going
On today's episode of The New Stack Makers recorded at KubeCon & CloudNativeCon in Austin, Texas Josh Bernstein, Vice President of Technology at Dell Technologies and leader of the {code} open source initiative, and Kit Colbert, Vice President and General Manager of Cloud-Native Apps at VMware, break down what a Kubernetes deployment looks like today, and what the typical enterprise's Kubernetes cluster will look like in the future.
Often, enterprises find themselves "Kicking the tires," when trialing Kubernetes in their technology stack. After making the jump to using Kubernetes in production, they can then find themselves facing the challenges of running Kubernetes on-prem versus running it in the cloud.
"The challenge with containers is not with dev tests. We see containers being a very common way of building a CI/CD pipeline. When you go to production, that's when it gets really hard. That's when you have requirements like security, monitoring, and compliance. There's a lot of problems you start getting into," said Bernstein.

  • How Next-Gen Applications Will Change The Way We Look At Data
Autonomous cars alone create over 3-4 terabytes of data per vehicle hour. There are new businesses like Netflix creating huge volumes of data. No industry has seen this volume of data ever before. How are we going to leverage this data? What are the challenges as we slip into a data driven world? How is machine learning going to help?
We discussed many of these topics on today's episode of The New Stack Makers with Crystal Valentine, VP of Technology Strategy at MapR Technologies. Valentine has a PhD in computer science and prior to joining MapR she was a professor of computer science.
