  • A Kubernetes App SIG Deep Dive
On this episode of The New Stack Makers, we take a deep dive on the App SIG’s progress with Kubernetes 1.9. Joined by App SIG leads Microsoft Senior Software Engineer Michelle Noorali and Samsung SDS Senior Staff Engineer Matt Farina, we also discuss the most pressing issues that the SIG is resolving in order to help ease developer pain points when applications in Kubernetes.
"We really wanted to represent half devs and half operators. So much is focused on building Kubernetes, but once you have Kubernetes you need to write, and how does that work? We wanted to make sure that was represented, and that developer problems were being solved at that other layer of the stack that's so often overlooked," said Farina.

  • SIGs And The Kubernetes Community
On this episode of The New Stack Makers from KubeCon & CloudNativeCon, TNS Founder Alex Williams spoke to Kubernetes SIG steering committee member Joe Beda, Kubernetes community lead Sarah Novotny, and Michael Rubin, Senior Staff Engineer/Manager, GKE/Kubernetes to discuss what’s happening in their specific SIGs and how SIGs, in general, reflect on the Kubernetes community and its overall direction.
"SIGs are used as a governance and scaling mechanism. They own code, they own areas of the product and project, they own areas of the code base, sub and adjacent projects, they have some technical ownership, some vision ownership. As Kubernetes has gotten bigger and more people want to contribute, in order to prevent us from falling into a monolithic infrastructure, we wanted to distribute the decision making. The SIGs are our way to do that," said Novotny, adding, "I spend a lot of time thinking about Conway's Law--The software that you build reflects the organization that you have."

  • Cloud Native Architecture And The Role Of Storage
In this storage-focused discussion The New Stack had during KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2017 was held with {code} Open Source Software Engineer Vladimir Vivien and Mike Rubin, Director of Engineering at Google Container Engine & Kubernetes, touched on on bringing universal, vendor-agnostic storage to Kubernetes with gRPC, the CSI standard, and what’s new with storage in Kubernetes 1.9 and CSI.
Vivien went on to note has been hard at work on the CSI implementation that released inside Kubernetes 1.9.

“Anyone who wants to write their own volume driver for Kubernetes will be able to do so using the CSI interface," said Vivien.
Rubin also noted that this is particularly exciting for vendors, with CSI enabling out of tree storage, with an easy to understand interface.

This allows for storage solutions to work with Kubernetes, and boosts opportunity for working with distributed architectures and consuming storage while decreasing Kubernetes overall complexity.
