  • What Is Storage To Cloud Native And Why Is It Important?
Between breaking down storage as it relates to data storage and persistent data, The New Stack Founder Alex Williams got an update on the Kubernetes storage SIG's progress, with later discussion focused on how to best bring vendor-agnostic storage to Kubernetes.
We also included highlights from the new book Cloud Native Infrastructure: Patterns for Scalable Infrastructure and Applications in a Dynamic Environment by Justin Garrison and Kris Nova. When asked why they wrote it, the pair were quick to offer the following reasoning:
"I think as far as the audience goes, for me personally, I really wanted to give infrastructure engineer an opportunity to swing with the application engineers," said Nova. "For me it was about giving back to the community and giving back," added Garrison.
"Software's not easy, and to be able to capture these patterns to see how the pioneers are doing things is great." noted Kitson.

  • The Future Beyond Kubernetes 1.9
At the 2017 KubeCon + CloudNative Con conference, several project launches were announced reaching the valued 1.0 status, including FluentD, Prometheus, and LinkerD.  Ihor Dvoretskyi, Developer Advocate at CNCF, Sarah Novotny, Head of Open Source strategy for GCP Google, and Michelle Noorali, senior engineer at Mircrosoft, co-lead for the KubeCon and CNCF, join Alex Williams to discuss what it takes to get a project to that coveted status, what the newly elected CNCF governance board is working on, and what the future might hold.
"We would like long term, committed contributors. We are working on building a mentoring program. So we're looking at growing the people that are coming to Kubernetes, but we're not necessarily optimising for people just coming in and trying things out," said Novotny.

  • Abstractions in Container Storage: The Rex-Ray and CSI Story
On today's episode of The New Stack Makers, we sat down with {code} Technical Director Clinton Kitson to learn more about CSI, and how storage abstraction is impacting developers working with containers today.
In earlier times, storage interfaces means drivers that were installed on hardware. Here we are today with containers and the container storage Interface (CSI) that serve as abstractions to connect storage architectures to container-based environments. This brings us to REX-Ray, an open source project that has grown to become the first stable, working model of the open source Container Storage Interface (CSI), an effort to define an industry storage standard that will enable storage vendors to develop a plugin once and have it work across multiple container orchestration systems.
