  • Where Is Kubernetes Headed In 2018 And Beyond?
On today's episode of The New Stack Makers, we sat down with Aparna Sinha Group Project Manager for Kubernetes at Google, Google Engineering Manager Phillip Wittrock, and Aaron Crickenberger Samsung SDS Cloud Architect. The topic of today's discussion from KubeCon & CloudNativeCon was the future of Kubernetes as we head into the new year and look ahead to 2018.
When discussing Kubernetes future impact on Google product development Sinha explains that, "I think from a Google perspective we're very much dedicated to the continued growth of Kubernetes and helping it thrive. It has to be thought through very carefully in terms of the value and the culture. The product SIG in the open source community is a horizontal SIG, and the thing we do is work with the other SIGs to bring more transparency, so the SIGs know if what they are working on that could impact another SIG. As for what's the direction, I think that direction is really set by the community. There's a real push toward stability."

  • Open Source Is The Best Insurance For The Future: Eddie Satterly Talks About IAG
IAG or Insurance Australia Group is one of the largest insurance companies in Australia. IAG has been around for more than 160 years, they obviously have a huge stack of legacy applications and infrastructure. There are over 147 core insurance systems running within the IAG group. The majority of those are mid-range mainframe systems like AS/400.
Around two years ago, the company decided to change things. They name long time executive Julie Batch as Chief Customer Officer. Under her leadership, IAG started a group called Customer Labs to consume and get involved with open source; something they never did in their 140 year long history.
That work led IAG to actually open source their own technology. They open sourced one of their technologies called Data Pipeline. It's a tool to help companies do ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) in python.
"IAG is an incredibly conservative company that's 160 plus years and operates in a highly regulated industry," said Satterly. "To open source their technology is pretty significant; it's a big change and a jump ahead for them."

  • Open To Collaborate: OpenStack Goes Back To Its Roots
    Change is the only constant.
OpenStack continues to change. It continues to evolve. From Integrated releases to Big Tent to Composability. This year at the OpenStack Summit Sydney, the OpenStack Foundation executive director Jonathan Bryce, talked about the importance of Open and Collaboration.
What has changed in the market that the OpenStack community needed to address these two key points?
Interestingly, Bryce said that they really never talked about what ‘open’ and ‘stack’ mean in the name of the project. As OpenStack grows in popularity and adoption it’s becoming increasingly important to reflect on the last five years of the project and look at the key attributes.
OpenStack is no longer an experiment, it’s powering massive private and public clouds around the globe, it’s powering services like WeChat, that serve over a billion users in China.
