  • The Art of the Neural Network
Technical and entertaining -- that is perhaps the best way to describe the talk Siraj Raval gave at Software Circus in Amsterdam under the big tent with a North Atlantic storm bearing down. A fitting end to a conference that was about the experience and the people as much as anything. And Raval did not disappoint.
Today, building neural networks is still like art. Artists combine existing ideas to get new results. So why are neural networks so important? Listen to Raval's talk about the experience he had in India jut before the days of the conference and how he connects a horrifying beating he saw and how it relates to the role of functions, variables and mathematical optimization. Raval makes the point that our world’s problems are vast and unimaginable. We need a super intelligence to solve them. And thus the importance of neural networks.
Friday, we'll have the second installment of Raval's talk, his rap performance about neural networks. A big thanks to {code} for making our live streaming possible from Amsterdam at the fascinating Software Circus.

  • Lyft’s Envoy and the Emerging Prospects of Service Mesh Architecture
How best should an organization transition its old behemoth monolith architecture into the bright shiny new world of microservices? The principal software engineer of the brightest and shiniest service out there, Lyft, tells us you don't have to. Matt Klein told The New Stack Scott Fulton at PagerDuty Summit 2017, that a start up, just like Lyft was a few short years ago, can develop its own monolith more easily than it can develop complex microservices.
But with an underlying service mesh architecture, such as Klein's Envoy, that monolith can still be providing service-oriented functions to customers in the same way, and probably without service degradation.

  • Why Containers Are Everywhere in Microsoft Azure
One clear theme emerged when talking to Corey Sanders, director of compute for Azure. Sanders said containers are everywhere in Azure’s technology infrastructure. He says by far the great greatest use case is for developers who want to use containers to build new apps instead of virtual machines.
Microsoft in turn is using containers as a vital infrastructure for managing its own services within Azure and doing it using open source technology. Sanders views reflect the almost impossible to dispute fact that containers really are everywhere in the market and will continue to spread across infrastructure, be it public, on-premises or with a workload mix across all infrastructure environments.
Sanders, who joined us virtually at the Open Source Summit in Los Angeles from his office in New Jersey, said that he could talk for hours about containers. They simply are a fundamental shift in application deployment that reflect a new dimension of speed, portability and agility.

  • The Container Landscape's Maturity Evident in {code} Storage Projects
Clint Kitson is technical director for the {code} open source initiative. We caught up with Clint for a live at the 2017 Software Circus, where we asked about the maturing of container technologies and how that fits with {code}, its outreach and the work it is doing to make Rex-Ray integrate with different storage environments. Rex-Ray now interoperates with the  Container Storage Interface, Kubernetes and OpenShift, Docker as well as Apache Mesos. Rex-Ray offers a storage integration with various environments including Dell, Amazon and Red Hat Ceph.
