Rinzai draws from an allegory from the Lotus Sutra, The Burning House, to direct the student to understand that, in seeking things outside of ourselves (our direct, immediate experience of this), we become lost, clinging to what has no substance. Gaining insight into our deep nature, we actualize the non-discriminating light shining through the house of our own being.

Rinzai says that the fundamental disease is a lack of self-confidence and seeking answer from without. How is it that we turn our faith inward and allow our deep nature to flow out into the world?

In this Teisho, given on January 5th 2020, Rinzan Pechovnik Osho examines “The Old Woman and the Pure Land” from The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women.  When we open to all that is with nothing excluded, no good, no bad, no now, no later, the Pure Land is all around us. When we close off to all that is, we constrict and cause suffering for ourselves and others.

In this Teisho, given December 29th, 2019, Rinzan Osho examines The Rinzai Rokui: Teaching the Assembly, Chapter X. Whenever we think that it is supposed to be one way, we are lost. Instead, as Master Rinzai says, sometimes it is one way, sometimes it is another.  When we freely move between different ways of being, it is a gift to ourselves and also a gift back into Being.

In this Teisho, given on the seventh and concluding day of Autumn Sesshin 2019, Rinzan Osho examines Case 19 of the Mumonkan: "Ordinary Mind is Tao." Fundamentally, our task is to brush away conceptions of mind and to rest and revel in a state of wonder. In such a state, we do not merely sit back, but spring forward into life.

In this Teisho, given the sixth day of Autumn Sesshin 2019, Rinzan Osho examines The Rinzai Rokui: Ascending the High Seat, Chapter Two. In Zen practice, breaking through the ego membrane, we have a direct experience of intimacy and a consequential deepening of care for all things. To dance freely in the Great Mystery, sometimes giving and sometimes receiving, is the true call of compassion. 

In this Teisho, given the fifth day of Autumn Sesshin 2019, Rinzan Osho examines The Rinzai Rokui: Ascending the High Seat, Chapter One. Rinzai continually invites us live an undivided life. He used Dharma Combat (Mondo) as a tool to invite us to see and flow into the Great Matter of life and death, challenging us to live fully, in an authentic and attuned manner.

In this Teisho, given the fourth day of Autumn Sesshin 2019, Rinzan Osho examines "The Old Woman of Mount Wutai" from The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. In seeking true wakefulness, we have to go into what is unknown and unknowable. To do this, we must go straight on, facing each moment with curiosity and wonder.

In this Teisho, given the third day of Autumn Sesshin 2019, Rinzan Osho examines Case 48 of the Mumonkan: "Kempo's One Way." When engaging in spiritual practice, the mind wants to know if it is doing it right or not. From the deepest perspective, there is no right or wrong. In this way, not knowing is most intimate.
