  • Ep. 50 - How Yoga Can Help Us Age

    Send us Fan Mail

Aging can be tough. One day we're drinking all night and waking up without a hangover, the next we're plucking ear hairs and concerned about drinking caffeine late in the day.

This week I look at how Yoga can help us embrace our beautiful aging self by...

    1. How yoga can help us age physically
    2. Realizing that we are more than our body
    3. Death is not a boogieman

As morbid as it sounds, our time here is limited. I feel the more we reflect on where we are, the better we can adjust for our every changing body and mind to make the most our our time!

  • Ep. 49 - How Breathwork Can Help You

    Send us Fan Mail

The benefits of breathing exercises have gotten a lot of attention lately. However, these practices are thousands of years old. In this episode, I go over how breathwork (pranayama) helps us return to center physically and mentally.

    1.  Breathing exercises' tie to Yoga

    2.  The breath, the body and the Central Nervous System

    3.   A short breathing exercise to try on your own

Breathing exercises are a great, low-threat entry to yoga. No studios, no yoga pants, no man-buns. It can be done at home, work or in your car. please give the exercise in this episode a try and let me know what you think.

  • Ep. 48 - How Yoga Helps My Marriage

    Send us Fan Mail

Disclaimer: I am not a perfect husband

This week I reflect on how yoga can make us better partners.

I never thought that bending and holding poses would lead to talk about being a better husband, but here we are.

    Things covered in this episode…

    1.       It starts with you – yoga can help cope with stress/anxiety which helps you show up for your partner.

    2.       Yoga can make sex better with connection

    3.       Applying the ethics of yoga (yamas) to your relationship

The big take away from this episode is relationships are work. It takes individual and joint efforts to make a good relationship fucking great.

By feeding our practice we feed our relationships.

  • Ep. 47 - How Journaling Help Can Our Mental Health

    Send us Fan Mail

During my last deployment, journaling served as my mental and emotional outlet. It was a great reminder of how important and valuable the simple act of  writing down my thoughts is.

Journaling can be tied yoga philosophy by the fourth niyama, Svadhyaya or self-study. Writing down our thoughts and emotions does a few things for us.

    1. It forces us to put the jumbled mess in our head into a linear fashion, a sentence.
    2. Once we write everything down, we can look at our thoughts from a different perspective.  Which typically allows to dissect our thoughts, and question them (self-study)
    3. It allows us to get everything out of our head and onto a piece of paper, and that gives us some much needed space.

Additionally, journaling grants us the power of reflection. The greatest quarterbacks in the NFL spend hours watching themselves play to help them see their areas of improvement. We should do the same! Watch your own tape by writing about your day, what you did well or what could have gone better and track your progress.
I feel journaling is a great and easy entry to improve our mental health. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Ordinary Yogi Podcast and share with someone you think would benefit from this.
