God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay. Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day. So, Merry Christmas to one and all who are up early and listening to this show. It’s a day of joy and celebration, and I want to acknowledge that before I share some very personal observations with you. I don’t want to detract from the good news of the day – the day when we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the world. All glory and honor go to him today, but I must add a sad note to today’s festivities. This will be the last edition of The Outdoor Cooking Show.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let Earth receive her King. I know it’s still a week away, but I believe you can’t start celebrating the birth of Christ too soon, so joy to the world – the Lord is come. Do you know who wrote the Joy to the World? And no, it wasn’t Jeremiah the Bullfrog, or Three Dog Night you wise acre. It was Handel – as in Handel’s Messiah…yeah, Hallelujah! Same guy. He strikes me as being a little obsessed with Christmas, don’t ya’ think? Not that I have a problem with that, because truth be known – I’m a little obsessed with Christmas, too – especially during Christmas season. Actually, I’m a little obsessed with Jesus, and I know some of you don’t share that passion, but I make no apologies for it.

I can tell the Holiday Season is in full swing because our neighbors have finally turned on their outside Christmas lights – you know, the lights they leave permanently attached to their house, year round? No, we don’t really have neighbors who do that – well, not anymore…not since we moved, anyway. I’m serious when I tell you this. The first neighborhood that we lived in when we moved to Houston 41 years ago had an all brick house about two blocks away from ours, and the owner painted the brick pink.

Welcome into another edition of the show that asks the question, “If I have to open a box and add water, does that make it homemade?” What do I know? Heck, I’m such a lousy cook, I can’t even boil toast, you know? As a matter of fact, I’ve repeatedly admitted that I’m not an expert cook, but I’ve also stated that I think that makes me the perfect host for The Outdoor Cooking Show, because I’m not afraid to ask the stupid questions that all the rest of you are too embarrassed to admit you don’t the answers to. Now, that isn’t exactly the purpose of today’s show, but we’ll get to that later on. I wanted to spend most of our time together telling you a great story from this past week that I think you’ll enjoy.

I don’t know about you, but I think the turkey got revenge at our house. Not only did I feel like I was the one who got stuffed, instead of the bird, but I’ve been eating all manner of turkey leftover dishes ever since. I mean, with every single bite I feel like old Turkey Tom is kind of whispering in my ear, “Here I am again, buddy. Now, aren’t you sorry you sacrificed me on the altar to gluttony?” Hey, I know better than most that “‘tis is the season to be pudgy,” but I just way overdid it this year. We even cut back on the number of carbohydrate side dishes that we served for Thanksgiving Dinner, and I still felt like I was hyper nourished, if you know what I mean.

Happy Holidays to you! And you know, these really are the happiest of the happy holidays, because as of right now – the holidays haven’t really begun, have they? Boy, and once they do the chaos kicks in, doesn’t it? So, enjoy the happiest of the happy holidays, while you can, because it won’t be long before we start planning holiday get togethers with friends and family, decorating, coming up with ideas for gifts, making lists and checking them twice, and of course, cooking up copious amounts of food for all these functions. At least that last part is something we routinely do here on The Outdoor Cooking Show, and we’ll be trying to help out with that when the holidays do begin.

Happy weekend – hope you had a good week. Me? Oh, thanks for asking. I had a rollercoaster kind of week – you know, up and down – up one day, down the next. I really enjoyed last week’s installment of The Outdoor Cooking Show, but I figured my football Saturday would go downhill fast after that, because my beloved TCU Horned Frogs had to play Baylor that afternoon, and I don’t need to remind you how hideously bad my Frogs have been so far this season, or how our legendary coach for the last 20 years, Gary Patterson got fired the week before the game. Plus, Baylor was ranked #12 in the country. They’d only lost 1 game, so I was convinced it was going to be a bloodbath in Fort Worth.

Do you remember a few weeks ago when I told you we had suffered through a really bad sports weekend in the Hames Family? Well, last weekend was all that on steroids! I mean it! It was horrific, and it just seemed to spill over into the rest of the week! I know you understand what I’m referring to, but we’ll deal with that in due course. Our bad sports weekend started with that pitiful performance by the Astros on Friday night in Atlanta, and it didn’t get any better on Saturday night.

Happy Halloween Weekend, you ghosts and ghouls, you! May all your tricks be treats and may all your Christmases be bright. Okay! Yeah, I think I just skipped right over Thanksgiving, didn’t I? That’s probably not good for the host of a cooking show, huh? Well, food comes into play in all those holidays – heck, all holidays in general, I guess. But hey! We don’t need no stinking holidays to talk about food – not on The Outdoor Cooking Show, and that’s what we’ll do.

Happy Birthday to me – I turned 73 – this past Friday, to be exact! No, I don’t mind admitting how old I am, not at all. I’m 73, and I’m still trying to make people smile and laugh on the radio, so I’m actually kind of proud to admit that. You know, when I was Irv Harrigan on The Hudson & Harrigan Show for 30 continuous years, management tried to tell us, “Don’t admit your age! H&H are timeless!” Ha, I always thought that was such nonsense. I mean, did they really think people couldn’t do the math?
