The Overland Podcast

It was not long before we were slinging our packs on and heading east down the trail. We had about a mile to go to get to the highway. This was where we staged our bucket of water and charging station. I felt good. James had talked most of the day before about how difficult today would be, how tired and sore we would be. I was not looking forward to it, but it seemed as if the Advil had done the trick. My legs felt loose and ready for the day. There was a slight breeze and the sun show bright. I could not wait to see what today brought to us. It was going to be a good day.

The night was good. I slept pretty well. I did hear some rustling around the tent through the woods during the night multiple times. My bet is on an Armadillo, but you never know. I had my sidearm resting by my head just in case the Armadillo become a Bear through some form of metamorphosis during the night. We had taken the time, just before we headed to bed for the night to secure our food high up in a tree via Bear Bag. We knew the food was safe, but we also knew that the smell would still be there traveling through the air seeking the nostrils of any hungry meat lover. The chances of us seeing a bear were good I thought. It was the time of the year when Bears were stocking up on anything and everything they could eat to prepare for their long winter nap so I am sure they were hunting...

This was the first time I had backpacked in years.  I was nervous.  I had doubts about my ability and doubts about my gear.  This was the day it was put to the test. This was the day I put myself to the test.  I really did not know what to expect...from the others or from myself.  I was covered in fear and anxiety.  But I went out anyways.  I had waited for this moment for years.  This was the day.  Here we go!

Backpacking the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas.  This was an amazing trip that we decided to go on in October 2022.  First time I had backpacked in 15 plus years.  This is my account of how the weekend went.  It was incredible, but I had my doubts if I would make it.

Overlanding Extracurricular

Extracurricular is a combination of the Latin prefix extra- meaning "on the outside" and the word curriculum, meaning "a running, course, career." Something that is extracurricular is on the outside of your course or career. When you get involved in an extracurricular activity, you are going outside of what is expected.

What do you like to do WHILE Overlanding?

It seems like this list grows for me every year…

As I have gotten into the Overlanding World, I have discovered new ways to experience the outdoors that I have been missing out on…

I used to just go out, setup camp and be content with cooking and just relaxing or whatever…AND I STILL LOVE DOING THAT…that is really my passion and the CORE of why I enjoy it so much…

But there are so many other ways to experience the outdoors that I am now incorporating into my Overlanding Adventures…

Lets talk about it!

Earlier this year I experienced a complete life change.  I lost 62 lbs and now I am in the best shape of my life.  Now I have been able to incorporate some things I love into my Overlanding Lifestyle.  Some hobbies that I have not been able to do because I was out of shape or really just did not have the "want to" I am now wanting and desiring.  Mountain Biking, Hiking, Backpacking, Kayaking and more have now become a part of my life and avenues whereby I can explore MORE and see MORE and get outside MORE along with my Overlanding Adventures.

Recently, I was invited to go on a backpacking trip (3 days and 2 nights) on the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas with a friend and 2 of his friends.  I was honored.  I did not want to be "that guy" that they were waiting on, having to constantly help out, or voted off the island when we got back.  I was worried if I was in shape to make it.  I was worried I would not have all the right gear.  I was worried I would starve to death.  All these and more scampered through my mind as I prepared to make this trip into the unknown.

Tony from Bats Offroad and I (the BROfessor) recap our time at Rendezvous in the Ozarks 2022.  Rendezvous in the Ozarks is put on each year by Natural State Overland (www.naturalstateoverland.org) and was held this year at Mulberry Mountain.  It was an amazing time with over 700 rigs showing up from over 30 states.  Vendors, classes, trail runs, and tons of giveaways and family time is what makes this event special each year.  Tony and I talk about our experience there and give our rundown on how the weekend went for us.
