Three people died on e-scooters last month and there's a class-action lawsuit under way by accident victims. You're allowed to ride them on the road but you don't have to wear a helmet. Does this need to change?

  • Fired over vegan joke
    The editor of the magazine attached to the Waitrose British supermarket chain has been sacked after emailing a joke about killing vegans. Freelance journalist Selene Nelson pitched a series of stories on vegan cooking to William Sitwell. He replied saying "How about a series on killing vegans, one by one. Expose their hypocrisy. Force-feed them meat? Make them eat steak and drink red wine?"

  • Champagne for house sellers, tents for tenants falling beind
    Residential property sellers might be popping the champagne corks but tenants are falling further behind with their housing needs. Tommy Kapai Wilson from the Tauranga's Tuinga Whanau Social Services Trust says "when the cost of rental properties in Tauranga goes through the roof, the homeless go further through the hole in the floor."

  • Many degrees irrelevant
    Forty per cent of degrees will soon be obsolete and will merely be markers of achievement and study. Traditional under- and post-graduate degrees will disappear within a decade. More than half of Australian employers canvassed in the Graduate Outcomes Survey say that degrees in management and commerce are not worthwhile. Only 41% of science and maths graduates think their degree has been relevant to their job.

  • Comparing tampons and condoms
    A Kidscan survey of women and girls has found that more than half have either frequently or occasionally found it difficult to access sanitary items due to cost, nearly a quarter have missed school or work because of lack of access to them. KidsCan founder and chief executive Julie Chapman says condoms are handed out all over the place whereas there's no free sanitary products. Is is a good comparison though?

  • Masters graduate denied post-study work visa
    An Indian overseas student Shyamal Patel completed a Masters in International Studies at IPU in Palmerston North, writing her dissertation on supermarkets and buyer behaviour.She then worked as an office manager at Alamir Bakery in Wellington - a food company that supplies over 300 supermarkets and restaurants nationwide. But Immigration New Zealand has refused to issue a post-study work visa. Ms Patel says she has to make plans to leave the country.

    The Immigration Minister has more digging to do on a Czech criminal after it came to light that the Courts allowed him to return to his homeland twice on business. This appears to negate the argument that Karel Sroubek a.k.a Jan Antolik would be in mortal danger if he returned to his country of origin. Immigration lawyer Mark Williams explains how Imigration New Zealand can come to making decisions about who gets to stay and who's booted out of the country.

  • Protests at Defence Forum
    Protestors target the representation of US weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin at Palmerston North's Defence, Industry and National Security Forum. But, NZ First MP Darroch Ball says many other business are taking part which supply "apples, toilet paper, spare parts, electronics, steel and clothing to the Defence Force" and which have a presence in the city.
