Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. If you're new here, my name is Stephanie Buckley. I'm a Parenting Strategist and Family Systems Coach who specializes in ADHD, executive functioning challenges, emotional regulation, and the patterns that keep families stuck in the same arguments on repeat. I'm also a mom to a thriving 23 year old neurodivergent son, and I've been married for over three decades. I created this podcast because I didn't want parents to feel alone. I wanted to translate what is happening underneath behavior neurologically, psychologically, and relationally so families can better understand what is happening inside the brain and inside the family system.
Many employers are reporting that Gen Z employees are being fired at alarming rates due to struggles with accountability, punctuality, workplace professionalism, and receiving constructive feedback. But the real question parents should be asking is this: where are these skills supposed to be learned?
In this episode, Stephanie Buckley explores how the home is the first system where children learn responsibility, contribution, and work ethic. Drawing from family systems theory, executive functioning research, and developmental psychology, Stephanie explains how many modern households have unintentionally shifted children into the role of consumers rather than contributors.
Stephanie breaks down why chores and household responsibilities play a critical role in developing executive functioning, frustration tolerance, self-efficacy, and pride in meaningful work. She also explains how the absence of these experiences can contribute to difficulties receiving feedback, managing responsibilities, and functioning within workplace systems later in life.
This episode explores how parents can begin shifting family dynamics today by helping children and teenagers move from consuming the work of others to contributing to the systems they belong to.
