The Phillies Show

Bryce Harper got to Clearwater, Florida, on Sunday. He spoke to reporters in the morning outside BayCare Ballpark.

He had a lot to say:

• He talked about Dombrowski’s comments in October, when he wondered if Harper would be elite again or not.
• He said while he doesn’t need any motivation, the fact Dombrowski said what he said publicly bothered him.
• He talked about how the Phillies’ cleanup hitters need to step up.
• He talked about participating in the WBC.
• He talked about the Phillies’ chances to compete and more.

Harper mentioned the Phillies’ cleanup hitters. Alec Bohm could be the guy this year. We discussed his importance to the 2026 season as well.

The Phillies couldn’t salvage their relationship with Nick Castellanos. They didn’t want to.

So, they released him on Thursday. The Phillies are eating the final $20 million of a five-year, $100 million contract. That’s how badly they wanted Castellanos to go away. We talked about the Phillies’ decision, why it took so long and Castellanos’ admission that he brought a beer into the visitors’ dugout in Miami in June. We get into everything that soured the Phillies on Castellanos, and vice versa.

Day 1 of Phillies spring training is in the books.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler talked about his recovery from thoracic outlet decompression surgery in September, which required the removal of the first rib near his right shoulder. Wheeler revealed that he kept the rib, and it’s sitting in a case in his closet at home!

Wheeler is missing a rib and Nick Castellanos is missing a locker in the Phillies’ clubhouse. He’s still on the 40-man roster, but he won’t be much longer.

Plus, the plan for Aidan Miller, Aaron Nola’s decision to pitch for Italy in the WBC and Orion Kerkering’s tweaked hamstring.

Phillies pitchers and catchers have their first workout in Clearwater, Florida, on Wednesday.

What should we be watching this spring? Here are our top five storylines for the spring:

5. How does the bullpen set up after Phillies closer Jhoan Duran?
4. What is the team’s mindset following three straight years of disappointment? How do J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm feel knowing they were gone if the Phils had signed Bo Bichette?
3. How does Justin Crawford look this spring? There are legit concerns about the Phillies’ outfield production.
2. The Rotation. Is Zack Wheeler healthy? Is Aaron Nola going to bounce back? Does Andrew Painter look better than he looked last season in Triple-A?
1. Bryce Harper. How is he physically and mentally following Dave Dombrowski’s "not elite" comments? Where will he hit in the Phillies’ lineup?

Title: What will the Phillies’ Opening Day lineup be?

Opening Day is 52 days away with the Phillies hosting the Rangers on March 26 at Citizens Bank Park.

It’s never too early to talk about the Phils’ lineup.

Ruben, Jim and Todd not only try to predict Rob Thomson’s likely season-opening lineup, but they discuss what lineup they would like to see. Is it Trea Turner leading off? Is it Bryson Stott?

How about Bryce Harper?

We also share a few fun stories about reporter dust ups with coaches and players. Because, why not?

The Phillies smoked the Mets in the NL East last year, winning the division by 13 games. But the Mets won the offseason, especially when they stunned the Phils and signed Bo Bichette.

So, who’s better?

We go position by position through the Phillies and Mets lineups, including the rotation and bullpen:

• Catcher: Francisco Alvarez vs. J.T. Realmuto
• First base: Jorge Polanco vs. Bryce Harper
• Second base: Marcus Semien vs. Bryson Stott
• Third base: Bo Bichette vs. Alec Bohm
• Shortstop: Francisco Lindor vs. Trea Turner
• Left field: Carson Begne/Tyrone Taylor vs. Brandon Marsh/Otto Kemp
• Center field: Luis Robert Jr vs. Justin Crawford
• Right field: Juan Soto vs. Adolis García

If you’ve been listening to the show the past several weeks, you know we’ve been saying Harrison Bader almost certainly wouldn’t be returning to the Phillies in 2026. Sure enough, he just agreed to a two-year, $20.5 million deal with the Giants.

So what’s the Phillies’ outfield going to be?

Is there any chance the Phils sign another outfielder before camp opens next month?

We discuss Bader, the Phillies’ outfield situation, remaining free agents on the market and non-roster invitees coming to camp.

We asked you for your Phillies questions, and by and large they fit into three buckets:

• Are the Phillies really content with their offseason, like Dave Dombrowski said.
• How concerned should fans be about the Phillies’ outfield?
• How concerned should fans be about the Phillies’ starting pitching depth?

Thanks for the questions. We got more for this episode than ever before!
