On this episode of The Life of Phys Podcast, I sit down with Steve Caballero, legendary professional skateboarder, artist, and musician.
Steve began skating in 1976 at the age of 12 and started his career at just 14. His first sponsor was Campbell Skate Park, and by 1979 he was competing in national skate contests. After placing fifth in Escondido, California, he was approached by Stacy Peralta and joined Powell Peralta’s Bones Brigade, one of the most iconic skateboarding teams in history.
By 1980, Steve had turned pro during the Gold Cup series at Oasis Skatepark in Southern California. Over his career, he has invented several iconic tricks including the Caballerial (fakie 360 ollie), the frontside boardslide, backside boneless one, les twist, and switch inverts, contributions that shaped skateboarding forever.
But Steve is more than just a skater, he’s an artist, musician, and lifelong dreamer who continues to push boundaries and live passionately.
In this episode, Steve and I discuss:
His journey from Campbell Skate Park to the Bones Brigade
Inventing legendary tricks like the Caballerial
Life as a pro skater in the golden era of skateboarding
His passions beyond skateboarding, art, music, and creativity
Why chasing dreams and staying curious is the key to longevity
This conversation with Steve Caballero is an inspiring look at creativity, resilience, and what it means to pursue passion both on and off the board.
