Here is a surprise winter growing podcast for you all! It is designed to lift the spirits, and you can be assured that we are not going to mention the L word...! Ellen and Michael will run through a myriad of ways that you can keep growing during the darker months, from sowing seeds to micro greens, mulching to mossing.
Enjoy, and let us know what you get up to!
In this episode, Chris Packham describes the informal but deliberate planting scheme in his garden, a haven for wildlife. His garden has no lawn and wildflowers flourish, despite Sid and Nancy's attempts to destroy the lavender patch!
Chris gives listeners his top tips for attracting pollinators and birds to gardens and lets us into the secret to keeping birds in the garden year-round and setting them up to survive the winter.
Ellen asks Chris whether he is a fellow tree hugger and Chris describes what trees can teach us about how to behave in our time and space. They discuss HS2 and the ways it will impact ancient woodlands and the importance of protecting the ancient woodland we have left.
They talk about diets and how we should consider the foods that we eat and the impact food production has on the environment. Chris speaks about becoming a vegan, for ethical and environmental reasons. They round off the episode with the ultimate question – 'what is your favourite plant?'.

Conservation hero of the year, Honorary Doctor of Science, CBE for services to wildlife and nature conservation, host of The Really Wild Show and Spring and Autumnwatch. The very special guest in this episode is, of course, Chris Packham!
Michael and Ellen chat to Chris in his garden, surrounded by birds and butterflies and Chris's dogs, Sid and Nancy. They discuss biophilia and the importance of the connection between humans and nature as well as in relation to coronavirus and how things need to change in the future.
Chris talks about The Really Wild Show and having animals (including a jaguar) in the studio, describing a chaotic rabbit-related disaster episode. He tells us about some of his most memorable moments on Spring and Autumnwatch, including dreaming birds, climbing adders and other unexpected occurrences.
Chris discusses his extensive charity work and his campaigning to combat harmful wildlife practices as well as raising awareness and taking legal action where needed to encourage wildlife reform.

In this episode, Michael and Ellen chat to Lee, AKA the Skinny Jean Gardener, about his love of sharing gardening with kids. Lee used to be an electrician but discovered a love of plants, becoming the 'cool kid' on the gardening scene!
He has set up a vegetable garden at Jimmy Doherty's farm, worked with Jamie Oliver and Alan Titchmarsh and appeared on Blue Peter! He combines kids' entertainment and education together at his shows which he tours round schools and festival - all while sporting his glittery jacket! Over lockdown, he released his book 'How to get kids gardening' and has been inundated with messages from people who have discovered the endless perks of getting kids out in the garden.
They discuss how lockdown has helped families reconnect with plants and the best ways to grow edible plants at home – in the garden, on the patio or on a windowsill. Lee explains how to set up mini allotments with washing up bowls and how to use buckets to make frog ponds. There's even a special appearance from the true star of Skinny Jean Gardening, Lees' daughter, Olive!
Plus Ellen and Michael discuss their childhood memories from the WI to the sound of rain on the shed roof.
