Episode 10: “Double Double. Vegan Style, please!”
Should meat-producing industries and the fast-food chains that serve their goods "slay" in their own lane?
About 20 years ago, I distinctly remembered asking my vegetarian and vegan friends what they would do if every fast-food chain came up with vegan options. Back then, fast food vegan options consisted of bread and condiment sandwiches, packed with mounds of pickles, thick discs of onions, dry lettuce, and bright yellow mustard. ‘Hold the meat, and hold the cheese!’ Those were trying times, to say the least. Ohhhh, those were the days. As a vegan in the early ‘90's, the glorious condiment sandwich allowed every plant slayer the opportunity to break bread with our meat-eating counterparts and avoid being chastised by those that thought I was crazy for being plant-based.
Ohhh have the times have changed! Fast-forward 25 years, and now, vegans around the world have been freed! Stop hiding in the shadows and be placed in the spotlight. In this day and age, we are free to declare our proud lifestyle without fear of objection, judgment, or ridicule. More and more, people are converting to a vegan lifestyle, so much so that the food industry is paying attention. Close, close, close attention!
They are paying attention because now, there is money to make. A lot of money to make!
Imagine furthermore, if I said the meat-producing giants are now testing vegan meat products to roll out everywhere? Much like other fast-food chains such as Carl’s Jr., Del Taco, KFC, Burger King, even McDonald’s and Tyson foods are introducing a vegan burger in Tampere, Finland.
Vegans are a bit divided in their reactions concerning these moves by the food giants. Many applaud this initiative, while many others state that they will never eat anything at McDonald’s because one vegan burger cannot erase the many problematic aspects of the company.
But most importantly, how do we feel about the way these products are being marketed as "healthy”? I feel that the real question we should be asking is "Are these vegan options any healthier than the real meat?” because this is how fast food companies will capture both markets: by exaggerating the truth in marketing and trying to assure us that a Beyond/Impossible burger is way healthier than a meat burger. But is it really?
Follow the mettlesome trio as they examine the current science surrounding how faux meat and vegan products in fast food may be just another unhealthy product that takes your hard-earned dollar under the guise of good health.
Join Dan, Brian, and Mike as they peek behind this curtain of secrecy and decode the dietary deceptions to arm listeners with more information concerning their diet and health.
