Pirates pre and postgame host Dan Zangrilli joined the show. Nothing has been decided yet from the top on Paul Skenes. He hasn't been told anything. Dan still thinks he will be in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Skenes watch continues. Our theories and ideas on what is happening. Paul Skenes should be here already.
Steelers insider Mark Kaboly of The Athletic joined the show. Najee and Warren will likely split snaps again. It would make sense that Najee Harris wanted his option declined because he wants out, but it's still $7 mil. The Steelers will not hand out No. 1 because of what it represents.
Jonathan Bombulie of the TRIB joined the show for hockey talk. The NHL has no interest in getting rid of questionable hits or bad intent and they look for excuses. Jacob Truba once again almost caused a significant injury and hurt himself. The Penguins lost in the draft lottery and their pick goes to San Jose. They get one if Carolina goes to the Stanley Cup Final.
The Steelers rookie jersey numbers have been revealed. We recap who received which number and the best.
The Fan and the Pirates have extended their partnership through the 2027 season. Poni tweeted eyeball emojis with a picture of Paul Skenes and makes us think he might be coming up. The Pirates need to add more pieces, especially bats, to be in real contention.
The full Joe Starkey Show with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise from Tuesday, May 7th, 2024
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: Mitch Keller shoved and allowed one run in his second complete game last night. Where is Paul Skenes? We hear from Ben Cherington, Derek Shelton, and Jason Mackey on Skenes and the differences in their answers. Crowley helped malfunction the start of our show and joined to explain why. Zeise and Starkey threw out the first pitch at the Pirates game on Friday with Austin on the field recording it. Last night in the NBA was stunning for the Knicks and the turning of the guard for the TWolves.
Hour 2 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: A rumor is circulating that the Cowboys are, or at least were, interested in Najee Harris. Joe and Paul think the Steelers did the right thing by declining the fifth-year option and running backs continue to be devalued. Teams aren't signing many running backs to second contracts. A lot of guys can get the job done at running back and the No. 1 RB for Super Bowl winners the last 10 years have not been first-round picks and guys with major investment. Starkey's mailbag. Time for the Pirates to trade a young arm for a bat? Time for Nick Gonzales to be here. What else needs to be done?
Hour 3 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: Pirates manager Derek Shelton joined the show. Paul Skenes is 'scheduled' to start in Indy this weekend. He didn't go any further than that. Mitch Keller shoved and pitched his best game of the season. The Pirates have played better defensively the last 12 games. Pirates reporter Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined the show to talk about Paul Skenes. The rotation is the one solid spot on the team right now that the Pirates can depend on. We listen to an answer Derek Shelton gave saying "no, he's scheduled to start in Indy" when asked if Skenes will be in Pittsburgh, but the no was quick and not a definitive no, leaving some speculation. Nick Gonzales has been very good in Triple-A utilizing a new swing design. He looks comfortable swinging this way and should be in the majors.
