Lars Eller said there were games where he didn't even recognize the team during parts of the season. A big part of that was the Jake Guentzel trade. This is the oldest team in the league, what haven't they seen?
Penguins reporter Jonathan Bombulie of the TRIB joined the show. It's locker cleanout day for the Penguins with the season over. He thinks the Erik Karlsson trade is ok given the contracts the Penguins unloaded. Jonathan would trade Tristan Jarry but not fire Mike Sullivan.
Erik Karlsson said the Penguins were a huge disappointment and didn't live up to expectations. Zeise thinks Mike Sullivan is a part of the problem. They're not good in overtime or on the power play. What the Penguins are doing is not working. "This core is no longer capable of carrying this team to the finish line." - Zeise
Nick Farabaugh of Steelers Now joined the show. Graham Barton of Duke could be an option for the Steelers in the first round. Linemen have to be favored early and often for the Steelers. If the Steelers want to upgrade at tackle, it has to be in the first round because they'll all be gone by then. There are three centers who can be day 1 starters. Dante Jackson is an undersized guy at corner and it seems like they're looking at slot corners.
We understand the plan to preserve top arms, but don't plans change based on the circumstances?
Callers weigh in on the Pirates struggles and striking out looking way too many times. Plus, Jared Jones was removed after 59 pitches and one hit allowed. They're overthinking it. They got off to a good start, but was it the Marlins and Nationals? The decision making is questionable and makes us scratch our heads.
This is a bad place to be for baseball when Jared Jones has one of the best starts of anyone this season and only goes 5 innings. Starkey still can't get over it.
The full Joe Starkey Show with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise from Wednesday, April 17th, 2024
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: The Penguins season is over after Washington and Detroit both won last night. Their run as a Stanley Cup contender in this era is over. Starkey wouldn't mind seeing multiple staff chances to Mike Sullivan's group and Sullivan possibly be gone too. If the Penguins are very bad, fans could disappear quickly. This was entertaining, but that's all the Penguins have become. The Penguins and Warriors are both done winning championships. Golden State said they need Klay Thompson.. he went 0-10. It's a scary proposition to tear it down. Would Mike Sullivan feel like he's bailing on Sid if he left? Detroit and Washington both won and eliminated the Penguins from playoff chances. The Pirates took Jared Jones out too early. Jeff Patton of the Baseball Card Castle joined the show and said Andrew McCutchen's 300th home run ball would sell for about $5k.
