    Co-Host: Rachel Smith @rachelsmithsmith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 28 we discuss finding purpose as a stay-at-home mom. We explore the identity shift that comes from transitioning from a career to becoming a stay-at-home mom and how doing so is an opportunity to reshape our relationship with the Lord.

    In This Episode:

Rachel shares her history with work and college. Ultimately, becoming a stay-at-home mom was planned.

It didn’t happen spontaneously or without a plan, but was something that was discussed for many years before it went into action. It meant financial sacrifice.

There is a misconception that you have to be well-off to be able to stay home with your kids. The truth is it took planning and sacrifice. You don’t have to be well-off; you just have to be resourceful.

Oftentimes the best life and path we can give our kids, especially one that glorifies the Lord, is when mom is directing her children.

Raising, teaching, and parenting as the sole caretaker is an opportunity for us to guide them in the way they should go.

It’s a hard thing to give up what essentially feels like your identity.

A lot of us not so rightly put our identity in our careers. The Lord worked on Rachel’s heart and convicted her that her identity is in Christ, not in a career or even being a mother.

Even though leaving her career was hard, Rachel realized her kids would only be young once. She knew it was the time to sacrifice.

This doesn’t mean that it was easy. Rachel has since struggled with her identity while in the trenches of motherhood. But she’s also learned that the actions she performs as a mom, whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or playing with her children, are all forms of worship. Everything we do for others we can do unto the Lord.

What you speak into the life of your child is what they believe.

I lot of people in our generation have a lot of damage from things that were said to them as children. What we learn and what we hear programs us.

Being a stay-at-home mom allows for teaching moments that can have a big impact.

Advice: during moments of frustration, take a moment to ask the Lord to guide our response before we respond.

Being a stay-at-home mom is the honor of sacrifice. Sacrificing a career, time, pride, identity, is the least we can do for a God who sacrificed it all for us.

Once we are able to embrace this, our fulfillment comes from the Lord. We can honor him as we sacrifice more of ourselves. Ultimately our purpose is not to live for ourselves. It’s the love the Lord our God with our body, mind, and soul. And second, is to love our neighbor as ourselves.

    @birthinginstincts

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 27 we continue the conversation with our guest from last week, Stuart Fischbein MD, also known as Dr. Stu. As a reminder, Dr. Stu is a Community Birth Physician, author of “Fearless Pregnancy, Wisdom & Reassurance from a Doctor, A Midwife and A Mom” and peer-reviewed papers Homebirth with an Obstetrician, A Series of 135 Out of Hospital Births and Breech birth at home: outcomes of 60 breech and 109 cephalic planned home and birth center births. Dr. Stu spent 24 years assisting women with hospital birthing and, for the last 12 years, has been a homebirth obstetrician who works directly with midwives. His website is www.birthinginstincts.com.

    In This Episode:

Women’s bodies were designed to grow a baby and deliver a baby.

Within the midwifery model, c-section rates are between 2-7%. In 1970 in the United States, the c-section rate was 5%. Today, hospitals are in the upwards of 32%, with some locations like Miami, FL around 50%.

What are we doing to the human species? There is no thought given to what this could do to future generations. There is always a ripple effect. For example, if you give someone penicillin you can save them. But then you create methicillin resistant staph aureus. You have to keep chasing your tail. It’s like with viruses. You give a vaccine, the virus mutates. Nature always finds a way.

The medical model and pharmaceutical companies don’t really want you to get well. That’s not how it was designed.

    Plus:

    • There are many natural remedies that midwives and birth keepers use during and after birth.
    • Oftentimes family members and partners are hesitant about home birth.
    • Who is performing the unnecessary c-sections?
    • Is birthing at home the better choice?
    • This is a life event.
    • We are God’s creation. He created our bodies to give birth.
    • There is a rise in alternative medicine.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Numbers 6:24-26:

“May The Lord bless you and keep you; may he make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; may he lift up His countenance upon you, and grant you peace.”

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 26 we have a very special guest: Stuart Fischbein MD, also known as Dr. Stu, and he is a community-based practicing obstetrician and an associate of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, published author of the book “Fearless Pregnancy, Wisdom & Reassurance from a Doctor, A Midwife and A Mom” and peer-reviewed papers Homebirth with an Obstetrician, A Series of 135 Out of Hospital Births and Breech birth at home: outcomes of 60 breech and 109 cephalic planned home and birth center births. Dr. Stu spent 24 years assisting women with hospital birthing and, for the last 12 years, has been a homebirth obstetrician who works directly with midwives. His website is www.birthinginstincts.com.

Dr. Stu travels around the world as a lecturer and advocate for reteaching breech &
twin birth, respect for the normalcy of birth and honoring informed consent.
Follow him on Instagram @birthinginstincts and at The Birthing Instincts
Podcast with midwife Blyss Young as he offers hope,
reassurance and safe, evidence supported choices for those women who understand
pregnancy is a normal bodily function not to be feared, simply desire common
sense and who cannot find supportive practitioners for VBAC, twin and breech
    deliveries.

    In This Episode:

    • Dr. Stu’s transition from attending in-hospital births to his shift to home birth and working with midwives.
      • It was a process of being curious and questioning things. “Why are we doing that?”
      • In residency and medical school, you get beat down and stop asking questions. He thought the obstetrics model was the only way to do things. He did all the things that he looks back on now and says “why did I do these things?” Like immediate cord clamping, taking the baby to the warmer away from the mother, wearing a hazmat suit to catch a baby, a woman birthing on her back, administering Pitocin or c-sectioning. He was trained with these things, but started to see how wrong these things were over time.
      • He started working with home birth women and midwives and started to see that these women were well-informed and educated. They simply chose a different path.
      • Midwives are better at taking care of women than doctors are because they’re trained to take care of women.
    • Women considering home birth often ask “what if there’s an emergency?”
      • There is so much fear in birth. The reason women fear birth is because the medical model has projected their fear onto women.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Ecclesiastes 11:5

“As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God the Maker of all things.”

  • 25. The Realness of Real Life (with HUGE Announcement!)

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 25
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 25 we have a different type of episode for you: a life update! We’re diving into the realness of real life and sharing the raw details about homesteading, de-cluttering, parenthood, and more. Plus, we have a HUGE announcement to share!

In This Episode on The Realness of Real Life:

    • Diving into the realness of real life
      • Rachel’s move from the country back to the city.
      • Rebecca’s urge to purge and declutter extra junk. There are a lot of de-cluttering challenges out there. 30-day challenges with 15-20 minutes per day in different rooms and areas of the house to encourage daily de-cluttering.
      • We share our love for the squatty potty.
      • The nitty gritty of homesteading life and how important it is to be prepared for it.
        • The importance of community when it comes to homesteading.
        • There was a tradeoff for Rachel’s family when moving to the country to homestead: her husband had to travel to work for hours each day while she was also experiencing health issues. Living outside of society meant separation from a lot of the comforts of life she was used to.
        • When you grow up in traditional society, we can become sensitive to things like butchering farm animals. It’s something that we are programmed to be uncomfortable with, where those that grow up on farms have the opposite experience (kind of like our society when it comes to physiological birth!).
        • Being thrown into full time farm life can be a shock, but we can all learn new skills piece by piece. We can learn to garden, or raise chickens, for example.
    • Making the choice to make difficult decisions
      • The Lord is our guide, but ultimately, we need to make the choice to move (whether literally or figuratively).
      • Too often we choose to remain in a situation or scenario where we are suffering. Perhaps the alternative is too intimidating or we feel we haven’t received an answer from God.
      • As Christians, we’ll say “well, let me wait for the Lord to tell me.” But we have to put ourselves out there and make the change.
      • Yahweh is a good and loving Father; He doesn’t want us to suffer.
      • At the end of the day, we make the decisions for our lives.
    • Motherhood
      • Story time about what baby Ben has been up to.
      • The joys of watching our kids grow.
      • PLUS, a big surprise announcement!

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Matthew 6:34

“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

    @theradiantmission

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 23 we have a very special holiday episode for you to enjoy! As we honor the birth of our Lord and Savior this month, we wanted to share the story of Jesus’ birth in Luke 2. We hope you enjoy this special episode!

In This Episode on Luke 2: Jesus is Born:

    • A special reading of Luke 2

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Luke 2: 1-52

    The Birth of Jesus

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

  • 22. Expectations are a Thief of Joy

    Send us Fan Mail

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 22
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 22 we dive into a topic that causes a lot of pain for many: expectations. What we think and feel is directly tied to our mental health, so we felt it was important to discuss how expectations can be a thief of our joy and how awareness of this can help.

In This Episode on Expectations are a Thief of Joy:

    • Defining Expectations
      • According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “the act or state of expecting : anticipation in expectation of what would happen.”
      • Hebrew “Tikvah” means “cord, hope, expectation, ground of hope, things hoped for, outcome.”
      • An expectation is a hope that something will or will not happen. Hope can be very positive, but the danger comes when the expectation built in our minds is not met. Example: having an expectation that everything will go perfectly during birth.
      • The difference between Biblical hope and worldly expectation. How often do we have expectations of our spouse? Then we’re disappointed when they don’t read our mind.
    • Expectations Lead to Disappointment
      • Our expectations change as our lives change.
      • Whenever an expectation isn’t met, it results in a negative emotion like contention, anger, disappointment, frustration, general friction between us and another person. Expectations are a thief of joy.
      • Expectations can lead to comparison, which is another thief of joy!
      • Children are sponges and mirrors—they mimic what they see.
      • We often have expectations of others, but none when it comes to ourselves.
      • Praying for the Lord’s will to be done—and for Him to prepare our hearts for his will—provides the peace of the Lord.
      • You can find contentment even in the worst of circumstances if your heart is in the right place.
      • Our end goal is not happiness in this life—it’s being in the kingdom with Christ. What we’re experiencing are the trials that will sanctify us. In this life we’re being crushed and polished like a diamond. Being content through it all is key.
      • We’re going to have disappointments in this life, but the Lord has a plan. He is our comforter. Putting our faith and trust in the Lord will help alleviate a lot of our pain. We can all walk in the joy of the Lord!

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    • Proverbs 10:27-29
    • Jeremiah 29:11
    • Psalm 62:5
    • Matthew 11:28
    • Philippians 4:6
    • Philippians 4:11-13

    Guest: Carrie Flanagan

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 21 we continue where we left off in Episode 20 with Carrie Flanagan on the sun, natural health, today’s modern day health care system, and a brief introduction to Pharmakeia.

In This Episode on The Sun, Natural Health, & Awakening to Pharmakeia with Carrie Flanagan with Carrie Flanagan:

    • The Sun & Natural Health
      • If you don’t live in an area where you’re getting Vitamin D year-round, your body will recognize this and store Vitamin D in your body for the months where you don’t get Vitamin D.
      • Even in Naturopathic medicine, it can become burdensome. We have a tendency to over-supplement and sometimes we just need a bit of simplicity.
      • Beef Liver contains Vitamin K and other essential B vitamins that we don’t often get enough of.
    • Finding the Right Care Practitioners
      • Rebecca went through a 2–3-year journey to figure out an allergic reaction. She is highly allergic to Red 4, also known as Carmine. It is a red dye that is made from the cochineal beetle.
      • Many doctors have the “God complex” today and are doing a disservice to their patients. We, the patients, are in charge of our bodies. We are hiring medical professionals, not the other way around. It’s important that we interview any practitioner that we are considering working with and asking them qualifying questions.
      • We know our bodies better than any other human could know our bodies. God gave us an intuition for a reason!
      • Rachel interviewed an OBGYN and discovered that their comfort takes priority. There is a lack of partnership in modern healthcare.
    • Introduction to Pharmakeia
      • Pharmakeia. Definition:
        • 1. The use or the administering of drugs
        • 2. Poisoning
        • 3. Sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it
      • Every pharmaceutical product we take has a tradeoff. It is important that we consider the potential side effects for anything we might take.
      • Example: Zofran. It is often given to pregnant women for nausea but this use is technically off label as it has not been approved by the FDA for use during pregnancy. Women have sued GlaxoSmithKline for babies born with heart defects, cleft palate and skull deformities.
      • As consumers, it’s important that we do our own research.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Psalm 121:5-7

“The Lord is your keeper, the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.”

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 20
    Host: Rebecca Twomey

    Co-Host: Rachel Smith
    Guest: Carrie Flanagan

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 20 we talk with Carrie Flanagan. She is a musician and health expert that healed her body by focusing on the mitochondria. By rising with the sun, changing her diet, and using supplements, Carrie was able to heal her histamine issues.

In This Episode on The Sun is Our Greatest Healer with Carrie Flanagan:

    • Carrie’s health journey
      • Was consumed in toxic diet culture.
      • Began to have histamine responses to foods.
      • She began working with a mitochondria expert but quickly realized there is no one-size-fits-all healing method. Our bodies are so intricately made that one method is not right for all.
      • There’s so much information out there that it’s difficult to know what’s even true.
      • For example, most of us grew up being told that sunscreen from the grocery store was a must any time we went into the sun. We’re told that the sun will give us cancer, give us wrinkles, and worse. Today, we’re finding out that these sunscreen products are actual toxic. They contain endocrine disrupters and can cause cancer.
    • The sun is our greatest healer.
      • Carrie began rising with the sun. She wore blue light blocking glasses in the evenings and avoided screens.
      • Context is everything. Carrie does not recommend staring at the sun. There are so many nutrients in the morning rays that you could actually get sick by looking into it. A great place to start is by cracking your window open, then working your way up.
      • Allow the sun to touch your skin and eyes, or a minimum your bare eyes (no contacts, no glasses, no sunglasses). When you allow the infrared light into your eyes in the morning, that signals to your melatonin that it’s time to go to sleep. This then downloads to your body how much melatonin your body will need to fall asleep that night. It’s all very synchronistic and why the sunrise is very powerful.
      • It’s about incremental steps and changes.
    • Who can benefit from sunlight?
      • Everyone!
      • Mitochondria is in every part of your body. Sunlight allows us to charge our mitochondria—it’s about the sun’s light. Our bodies are like computers, and the sun is our charger.
      • Our culture today demonizes the sun. We’ve lost some of the ancient knowledge about the sun.
      • “Let your life by thy medicine.”
      • Our bodies are the most technologically advance quantum computers that exist. Science is trying to reverse engineer the human body, but it’s void of the breath of God.

    Guest: Paula Carper

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 19 we continue the conversation with special guest, Paula Carper. She is a registered dietician and expert on women’s hormones. In today’s episode we discuss supplements, toxic diet culture, the microbiome, transforming health, and healing.

In This Episode on Our Bodies Are Miracles: Supplements, Toxic Diet Culture, & Healing with Paula Carper:

    • Vitamins, Minerals, & Supplements
      • When we take vitamin C, we’re taking ascorbic acid. Whole food vitamin C will certainly be best, as with any supplement.
      • However, it’s important to be aware that taking any supplement, even naturally, in high doses without context, isn’t always what’s best for our bodies.
    • Toxic Diet Culture
      • The diet culture and health and fitness industry often promote a one-size-fits-all attitude.
      • We tend to equate weight loss with health. This is because we’re being marketed to. When we step away from that merry go round, we can recognize the enemy in toxic diet culture. The reality is that we’re playing someone else’s game. We can step back and say “what game do I want to play? What’s the drum beat I want to march to?” This is where Paula is passionate. Helping women find their own way. Women are often told what to do and not to listen to their own intuition.
      • BMI was invented by a statistician as a way to gather data, it was never meant to be used as a barometer of health. This attitude keeps women stuck.
    • The Liver & the Stomach Microbiome
      • There is so much data that’s come out about the microbiome. We know that there is a lot of diversity in the microbiome. It’s about restoring restoring balance. In general, it can take 6-12 months, with 9-12 months minimum to truly restore gut dysbiosis and other issues.
      • Your overall environment, sleep, stress, and other factors can influence the microbiome. Our overall environment is really upside down and completely different from the environment we were intended to live in (a garden). How our bodies interact with that impacts our overall health. Illnesses, chronic illnesses, traumas, stress, and more.
      • God made our bodies to heal. We are currently in a fallen world and while we’re in this fallen state, it’s impacted our food, lifestyles, stress levels, ability to be out in the outdoor environment He created. The keys are there, we just have to find them because He designed us to miraculously heal and thrive.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    3 John 1:2

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
