The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 18
    Host: Rebecca Twomey

    Co-Host: Rachel Smith
    Guest: Paula Carper

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 18 we talk with a very special guest, Paula Carper. She is a registered dietician and expert on women’s hormones. She shares insights on what every woman needs to know about hormones, some of the myths about hormones that exist today, and how to heal our bodies holistically.

    In This Episode:

    • Introduction to Paula Carper
      • Dietician for 26 years with a background in the fitness industry. Fun fact: Paula loves to dance!
      • She started off in the health industry but quickly saw how nutrition was not a main focus in the medical industry.
      • She began to experience some women’s health issues such as endometriosis fibroids. This was a turning point for her. She started to look for answers and they didn’t have answers for her, just a recommendation for surgery.
      • Paula ended up in functional medicine and became passionate about helping other women.
      • Many women experience issues where the recommendation is a hysterectomy. However, the symptoms that cause these issues are often not solved by surgery. The underlying cause is often dysfunction occurring in the body. It can be an immune disorder that has a hormonal component.
      • Paula works with women experiencing menopause, hormonal imbalances, fertility related hormonal issues, and more.
    • Women’s hormone cycle
      • We were designed to create, nurture, and birth babies into this world. That’s why we have the hormones that we have. If our hormones are built around our reproductive cycles, we need to understand each piece of that cycle.
      • Understanding why we have a period is an important thing. A bleed while on birth control is not a period and many people do not know this. It is actually a withdrawal bleed from the artificial hormones. Birth control suppresses ovulation. It’s important to understand that we’re suppressing our hormones while on birth control.
      • Discussion on the enemy’s involvement in hormonal birth control and it being used as a tool of the enemy to let us think that we can divorce the natural effects of what sexual relationships were meant to create. It takes away our power to create.
    • Myths about hormones
      • “My doctor says my hormones are fine”
      • This typically involves a doctor performing a test at random and those hormones are going to change during different parts of our cycles. The hormones in our blood our are actually storage of what’s going on—they don’t tell you the whole picture.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Proverbs 3:7-8

"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 17
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 17 we discuss Rachel's journey to healing her health issues through holistic methods. She shares what the Lord taught her during this journey, what she discovered about her root causes, protocols used to heal her body, and more.

In This Episode on Healing Health Issues the Holistic Way:

    • Seeking a holistic path for healing
      • The goal is to find the root cause of symptoms, not to mask symptoms. For example, Rachel experiencing infertility was a sign that something wasn’t right. After performing the Dutch panel, she discovered she had extremely high estrogen levels and a number of other issues that needed to be healed through food and nutrients. Symptoms are clues for something larger.
      • Healing started with a change in diet. First was cutting out all alcohol, including wine, as the liver has to work extremely hard to process even one glass per week.
      • Discussion on coping mechanisms and recognizing how they can often be a sign of dysfunctions, deficiencies, imbalances, and other issues within our bodies.
      • Rachel worked with Paula Carper, a registered dietician. Paula helped her add in healthier foods that were specifically to support and balance her hormones. She focused on gut healthy foods to help heal her gut and detox her liver to open up her liver pathway.
      • Learning moment: even supplements have risks and can impact each individual in a different way. For example, Rachel had a bad reaction to a supplement called DIM. It gave her severe headaches and migraines; her body did not tolerate it. It’s important to note that just because something is “natural,” is from a plant, or naturally occurs in our bodies, does not mean it cannot negatively impact us. This is why it’s important to work with a registered dietician with a holistic mindset.
        • If you’re looking for someone who can work with you virtually, check out Paula Carper of Noble Nutrition.
    • Healing doesn’t happen in an instant. It takes time to detox and for the body to readjust after dysfunction.
      • Rachel talked to Paula about her continued issues and she suspected that other issues were going on and wanted to perform genetic testing. There had been suspicions of potentially having the MTHFR genetic mutation by another natural-minded doctor. After testing, she discovered she did not have MTHFR but did have GAD-1, which greatly impacts her ability to handle glutamate, including monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is in many processed foods.

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 16
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 16 we discuss miscarriage, loss, grief, and the lessons learned during difficult times. We explore the “rush” of modern society, and how we are called by the Lord to rest.

In This Episode on Miscarriage, Loss, Grief, & Stress: A Call to Rest (& Be Blessed):

    • Recap, pre-discussion about culture, the sabbath, resting:
      • It’s interesting how calm Ben is, he has a very calm demeanor and we wonder if his calm home birth had anything to do with his demeanor. Check out episodes 8 and 9 to listen back on this experience.
      • After first birth with c-section, didn’t work out for a long time (a year+). After second birth, which was a home birth, felt so much better.
      • The importance of caring for yourself for the First Forty Days after your baby is born (also known as the fourth trimester!).
      • Our culture today isn’t aligned for birth today. We are not set up to rest after birth in this modern day, fast-paced world. How does this go-go-go lifestyle impact our bodies as women?
      • Reminder: it’s okay not to be “on” all the time
      • The Lord calls us to rest on the Sabbath. He created us TO rest. Our go-go-go culture is a burden. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” The designer of our bodies told us we need rest.
      • Rebecca rested for 8 weeks after baby Ben. She then decided to start the 75 Hard Program.
        • What is #75hard? It is a mental challenge. For 75 days you work out twice a day for 45-minutes (one workout must be outside), drink 1 gallon of water, take a progress picture each day, follow a diet (no cheating, no alcohol), read 10 pages of non-fiction.
        • Towards the end of the program, Rebecca started to not feel great. Her knees hurt a lot and she started to feel tired. As the days approached the end of the program, she realized she was likely pregnant.
    • Rebecca’s story with her 3rd pregnancy and miscarriage:
      • Felt the symptoms of pregnancy then decided to take a test. Discovered a faint second line. She had not gotten her cycle back after her home birth baby, so went by how she was feeling.
      • Over the days, there was still a second faint line, but it continued to get fainter each day. Discusses her experience as she realized the baby was not progressing.
      • The baby, Baby August, passed on August 25th, the same day we recorded the episode with Evan on her miracle baby. Rebecca also experienced a miracle: she got to see the baby as it passed. As small as a sesame seed, with a tiny cord and placenta!
      • What a blessing it was to have had the opportunity to see her baby!
      • Looked for the lesson: a big one was trust in the Lord. Trusting His plan for life and future children. Reflecting on 75 Hard and how hard I had pushed my postpartum body.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    • Ecclesiastes 3
    • Psalm 147:3

    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 15, Rachel shares her experience with secondary infertility and what she’s learned about healing, health, and hormones.

In This Episode on Secondary Infertility: Healing, Health, & Hormones:

    • Secondary Infertility
      • Rachel had a traumatic c-section experience. The birth trauma from that event rolled into a very real fear that something was wrong.
      • In 2020, Rachel and her husband decided they were ready to expand their family.
      • After 7 to 8 months on trying, she started to feel very concerned since she had gotten pregnant quickly with her previous two children. This was when she started to recognize secondary infertility.
      • She struggled with the feelings of losing something that she once had. She often felt like Jacob during this time as she wrestled with God. But in this valley, she also learned how to trust the Lord.
      • Rachel went to see a fertility doctor and he confirmed that her bicornuate uterus was a unicorn! Rachel discovered that she could only get pregnant from one side of her uterus. This is when she realized what a miracle her previous children were, but also left her feeling frustrated by her uterine anomaly.
      • In the background, the Lord was aligning all the right people in her life. Rachel’s friend Paula, who is an amazing woman of God and registered dietician, wanted to help her.
      • She decided to take a Dutch hormone test and learned that there was a hormone imbalance and a few other issues. She spent the next few months focusing on healing.
      • Listen in for a surprise at the end!

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Psalm 113:9:

He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
     Praise the Lord!

    Psalms 37:4-7:

Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him.

  • 14. I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant Until I Went Into Labor: A Story of Hope with Evan Nichols

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 14
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith
    Guest: Evan Nichols

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 14, we talk to a very special guest, Evan Nichols, about her miraculous and hope filled testimony. After many years of infertility and prayer for a child, the Lord answered the Nichols prayer in the most incredible way. Evan’s story is one of hope for the barren woman, faith to the faithless, and a reminder that our God is the God of miracles.

In This Episode on Hidden in the Secret Place: A Story of Hope with Evan Nichols:

    • Evan’s Story
      • She and her husband decided to start trying to have a baby. After a year she went to the doctor and was told she had PCOS and would not have a baby without medical assistance. He put her on Clomid and she felt like a dark cloud was over her.
      • In 2016, Evan and her husband got a phone call that her husband’s father had passed tragically in an accident. This occasion brought a few family members to Christ and shifted things for Evan and her husband.
      • She and her husband started going back to church in Tennessee. Meanwhile, Evan’s parents started going to a miraculous church in Florida. One day she visited her parents church and the pastor shared the Parable of the Persistent Friend with her. After a conversation with him about this, a seed of hope was planted.
      • Back in TN, they started to pray for God’s guidance. She stopped taking fertility medication and didn’t go back to the OBGYN. She put her trust and hope in the Lord for her family’s future.
      • Eventually they moved back to Florida and got involved in church with the children’s ministry and worship team. She felt called to serve and focus on her relationship with God. She prayed a lot through this and for God to show her the baby. She had a vision of a little girl. Shortly after Rachel had a vivid dream about Evan having a gender reveal party. After thinking about it for a few days, Rachel decided to reach out to Evan and share this dream. It was a confirmation of God’s Word and what He was telling Evan.

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 13
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith
    Guest: Lea Peterson
    @vienna_glenn

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 13, we talk to a very special guest, Lea Peterson, about her journey with trying to conceive and what she learned along the way about marriage, health, birth, and more.

In This Episode on Trying to Conceive: Trusting God’s Timing with Lea Peterson:

    • Lea’s 7–8-year journey with trying to conceive
      • We are all children of God and He made our bodies perfectly. We are fearfully and wonderfully made!
      • There are spiritual aspects to conception that are beyond the physical. The mainstream perspective surrounding infertility often promotes a victim mentality. But there are two ways to look at it: why is God doing this to me vs. everything is for me and God is doing this for me.
      • In the process of waiting to conceive learned more about home birth and free birth. Lea loves the radical responsibility surrounding free birth.
      • She is not reaching to science to “save” her and help her get pregnant. She is waiting on the Lord’s timing.
    • Rachel’s secondary infertility struggles and lessons learned
      • She learned that God is good no matter what. Even if He doesn’t give us what we want, continuing to put our faith in Him.
      • At the end of the day, we were not placed here on earth to be mothers or anything else. We were placed here to be children of God.
      • There is a difference between an expectation and a hope. Learning to trust God without expectation, even if we don’t get what we hope for. But that’s what trust is, it’s faith without expectation.
      • What is the behavior of surrender? It’s a mind shift and feeling of peace.
    • We all have our own unique learning moments
      • Pregnancy complications, infertility, marriage issues, birth trauma—they all provide opportunities for us to lean into the Lord for guidance. All of these issues provide us an opportunity to learn and grow.
      • We are all at the mercy of spiritual warfare, it just looks different to different people.
      • Our feelings don’t change the Word of God. YHWH is our source of joy! His promises aren’t all the same but He does promise to be our joy when we delight in Him.
      • Hormone health is so important. Our bodies know what they’re doing, it’s our minds that need to be reconnected and retrained. Most of us don’t know our bodies until it’s time to have a baby.
      • Our bodies are in a constant state of healing. We’re either feeding healing or feeding sickness and disease.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    • Daniel 3:16-18
    • Psalm 113:9
    • Genesis 1:27-30

  • 12. Biblical Birth: Breaking Down Genesis 3 & Birth Misconceptions

The Radiant Mission Podcast | Episode 12
    Host: Rebecca Twomey
    @theradiantmission
    Co-Host: Rachel Smith
Guest: Brittany McCardle of The Biblical Birth School
    @thebiblicalbirthschool

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 12, we talk to a very special guest: Brittany McCardle of The Biblical Birth School. She is a wealth of knowledge on all things birth and the Bible.

In This Episode on Biblical Birth: Breaking Down Genesis 3 & Birth Misconceptions:

    • What are the biggest misconceptions about birth today?
      • That women are “cursed” (Genesis 3).
      • “What happened after Eve ate the forbidden fruit.”
      • It’s important to choose a version of the Bible that’s closest to the original version (Hebrew) such as King James or others. Different versions of the Bible can change meaning.
      • Genesis 3:16 might read “her labor pains will increase” as opposed to versions of the Bible that are more word for word and will read “her conception and sorrow is increased.” This greatly changes the context of this verse.
      • The Bible says that God only cursed two specific things: the serpent and the ground. Eve (woman) and her body were not directly cursed. We also read that the ground was cursed “for Adam’s sake,” an important phrase that we do not see with Eve at all. Nothing was cursed “for woman’s sake” or “for Eve’s sake.” That’s a significant omission.
      • We see the very first prophecy of the Messiah. John 3:16 is a promise and Genesis 3:16 is also a promise.
    • Words of advice
      • Treat your pregnancy how you want your birth to go. Who you hire will impact your birth experience. If you don’t want interventions during your birth, avoid interventions during your pregnancy.
      •  It’s easy to be swayed by doctors and tests, be cautious. Put your trust in the Lord. Fear can fuel the alternative.
      • Children allow us to have victory over the spiritual war we are in.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    • Genesis 3:15-17
    • Hebrews 10:23
    • John 3:16
    • Revelation 12:1-6
    • Leviticus 12:1-8

Does your birth center or hospital have birthing pools? Do they allow you to labor or deliver baby in a tub? Facebook groups can be helpful.
      • Recommendation: take a birth class while pregnant, in person if possible.
      • Rachel discovered that her baby was breech so tried spinning babies. Unfortunately, baby did not turn.
      • Chiropractic care during your pregnancy is extremely helpful! Choose a practice that specializes in adjusting pregnant women, like 100% Chiropractic or another local chiropractor.
      • Other tips to help with baby’s positioning:
        • Lean forward, don’t lean back and lounge on your back
        • Sleep on your left side
        • Don’t cross your legs
      • Rachel had an External Cephalic Version (ECV). Unfortunately, baby still did not turn from breech position. She was then scheduled for a c-section.
    • Scheduled C-Section
      • Rachel was scheduled, but was told to check her blood pressure at home. This led to some high readings which sent her in early for a c-section.
      • Rachel is told she has two uteruses. The doctor said it was uterus didelphys and would determine more later and this was the reason her baby was breech (he did not have the space to turn around).
      • Struggled with breastfeeding and postpartum depression.

    Bible Verses Mentioned:

    Proverbs 3:5-8:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

Thank you for listening to The Radiant Mission podcast! We are on a mission to encourage and inspire you on your walk with Christ and as you journey through life.

In Episode 09, we dive into part 2 of our birth story. We share the details of how we went from a VBAC friendly doctor to a home birth midwife to in the end having an unassisted home birth. We were faced with spiritual warfare and doubts, but in the end, YHWH won!

NOTE: possible trigger warning as we will discuss c-sections, birth trauma, and medical procedures.

In This Episode on Spiritual Warfare in Birth: Unassisted Home Birth with Michael Twomey:

    • Take Two
      • The Lord had laid it on my heart that we would have more children
      • I found YHWH in this pain and experience
      • When we got pregnant a second time, I prayed for the Lord to show us the way
        • He led us down new paths
        • Led to books to become educated about birth
        • Biggest lesson: pain can often be our biggest lesson. Through this He revealed to me how amazing these bodies are that he created.
        • Our bodies are not broken, they are not lemons. He created our bodies to grow babies and give birth to them.
      • C-Section rates in America are at 30-60%
        • OBs are trained surgeons
        • OBs do what is best for them and their own liability
      • We prayed for God to lead us to the right decision
        • He said we are going to have the baby naturally at home
        • I still went to an OB, a VBAC specialist. Felt the Lord saying “what are you doing here?” every time I would go
        • Sought a home birth midwife
        • Got chiropractic care
        • Hired a doula
        • Learned about birth
          • Knew we couldn’t just replace doctors with a midwife, we needed to educate ourselves on birth
          • Read Ina May Gaskin’s book (minus the first section with birth stories as I did not want to add stories while working through birth trauma)
          • Took the Hypnobabies course on birth and listened to tracks (aside: not diving into New Age in this episode)
            • Rewrote my mental scripts on birth
            • Learning to surrendering to birth and what God created the body to do
            • Fetal Ejection Reflex (FER) – the uterus pushing the baby down and out
          • Read Home Birth on Your Own Terms
          • Drank LOTS of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
          • Enzymes from pineapple and dates can also help prepare for birth
          • Saw prodromal labor as productive
