The vagus nerve is your body's longest nerve. It links your brain to a number of vital organs throughout your body, including your gut, heart, and lungs.
In fact, the Latin word "vagus" means "wanderer," which aptly describes how the nerve travels throughout the body and connects to various organs.
The vagus nerve is also an important part of your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you relax and digest food. It has an impact on your respiration, digestion, and heart rate, all of which have a significant impact on your mental health.

If you follow health trends, you may have noticed that skinimalism is a new trend that has emerged. I find it funny since it is something I've been talking about forever although I did not coin the term. The trend is all about less is more when it comes to skin care products - buying less, wearing less and using less. The trend is all about loving yourself as you are and using only the necessary products to enhance what God blessed you with instead of hiding behind the mask of makeup.

Today, we are showing you how my mom made vegan oxtails from the SisterWoman Vegan Recipe book. It was a hit at the Thanksgiving table but a lot of work.
I am warming up this Winter with hot cocoa and eating a delicious salt and vinegar seasoned salad.

Today, we are showing you how my mom made zucchini fritters with a raw vegan sweet and sour dip and vegan saltfish inspired by The Mindful Plate on YouTube.
But before we get there, I will take you in the kitchen with me as I make a salad using nori. Nori was what helped make the heart of palms in the vegan saltfish taste fishy.
Nori is a seaweed that comes from the ocean. It is high in prebiotic fiber that you don’t get in other land plant foods. Nori is an excellent source of iodine for thyroid health and vitamin B12.

I have heard husbands are working to sabotage their spouses' healthy eating with cookies around the house. Now, you can reinforce your healthy habits with healthy cookies of your own. When folks bring out their cookies, you can bring out yours. Here’s a couple you can try.
My mom made a Jamaican treat called gizzada, which we had for Thanksgiving. I made raw vegan gingerbread cookies.

I spent the Thanksgiving holiday with my mom and she is not a fan of cold soup during the cold months. Instead, we had a delicious soup and a salad to get in our fill of enzymes. I made the kale salad from the 30 Day Raw Vegan Challenge. This is the last month the 30 Day Raw Vegan Challenge will be available for free. The program is getting an upgrade in the new year!

We are all different. We think and behave differently. Our gut bacteria is distinct and our gut bacteria affects our brain and mood so it makes sense that our brains would be distinct as well. This is my understanding of neurodiversity. According to Wikipedia, “neurodiversity refers to variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood and other mental functions in a non-pathological sense. It was coined in 1998 by sociologist Judy Singer, who helped popularize the concept along with journalist Harvey Blume.”
Today, I am talking with Anuradha Kowtha, a catalyst, educator, and consultant, who works with individuals, small businesses and organizations. Anuradha’s journey working across both public and private sectors has led Anuradha to see systemic issues like hierarchy and exploitation and find ways to address systemic issues at their root cause. The thread that runs through Anuradha’s work is illuminating and liberating individuals and small teams from the indoctrination and cookie-cutter thinking that comes from capitalism and colonialism, so they can provide bold and innovative solutions rooted in justice to their clients and communities.

My mom laughs whenever I say she will live to 120. I am convinced it's possible due to the Blue Zones study and how my mom lives but what the book left out was racism and how it affects the Black community and our longevity potential.
A study of 55 Black women in the U.S. found that those with more racial discrimination experiences showed proportionally greater response in brain regions associated with threat vigilance and regulation of threat response. This is what chronic stress looks like.
This is something nutrition cannot fix. Racism has a trauma-like effect on Black women's health. The researchers concluded from the study that being regularly attuned to the threat of racism can tax important body-regulation tools and worsen brain health. Per other studies, this kind of chronic stress can increase the risk of mental health disorders and additional future brain health problems.
It’s one thing when we have to deal with this stress out in society and at work but when we have to deal with it within our own families and in our home, it really works against longevity.
On this episode of the Raw Food Health Empowerment Podcast, I have a special guest Hannah Pillow who has spent a large part of her life living amongst a wide range of cultures. She was married into a Pakistani family, grew up in a South African Indian family, lived in Istanbul, Turkey for two years and now she’s married into a British family and living in the UK.
Having not just traveled, but immersing herself in other cultures, she has learned that we are all a lot more similar than we realise. This is why she started a podcast. She wants us all to open our eyes to how similar we all are while appreciating the things that make us unique.
I met Hannah in a community I am a part of full of women of color business owners and I resonated with her story of having hard conversations about race with her mother in law and other family members.

I had my biz bestie, Brianna Wilkerson, come on the show to talk about essential oils that can give you the energetic boost you need without the crash and damaging effect of energy drinks and other sugary beverages.
I understand that essential oils may not help you pull an all-nighter but all-nighters are the worst. They rob you of brain cells and decrease cognitive function. Lack of sleep robs you in every way possible. However, if you are in a situation where emergency energy is needed, I have talked on the podcast before about yerba mate tea.
On this episode, we also discuss essential oils to help curb burnouts and stress so make sure to share this with the folks in your family who are in need of a mini vacation.
Make sure to register for the Summit Brianna is hosting, Your Healthiest Years Yet Summit happening October 18th-22nd. You are not going to want to miss this event, where I will be doing a talk on how you can afford to be healthy. My talk is a personal retreat so come with your favorite beverage and a journal. We are talking about self care and how to create your own personal path to health.
